DDT - Chapter 21
Chapter 21: Zombie King × Little White Flower (20)
The team led by the woman rested in the supermarket for a day. Once they had gathered enough supplies, they prepared to set off.
Although the female captain didn't particularly like Yi Shuhan, she didn't openly show her displeasure at her joining the team. She did it to save face and to maintain her status and popularity as the team leader. Instead, she spoke privately with her confidante, the vice-captain, who patted her chest to show she understood the captain's intentions.
The female captain nodded in satisfaction, and the two returned to the convoy.
Yi Shuhan was assigned to the last pickup truck. The truck bed had been modified with a simple roof and soft cushions. It was also loaded with a large pile of supplies the team would need on the road.
Yi Shuhan felt no dissatisfaction about riding in the back of a pickup. On the contrary, she was already incredibly grateful that this small team was willing to take her along.
Hugging an iron pipe and a fire axe she had found in the supermarket, Yi Shuhan sat down on a soft cushion in the truck bed. The vice-captain and another person also sat down in the back with her.
Yi Shuhan greeted them a little shyly. The vice-captain nodded in response, while the other person didn't even give her a second glance.
Feeling a bit awkward, Yi Shuhan retracted her hand and scratched her head.
The convoy slowly set off. Sitting in the truck, Yi Shuhan watched B City recede into the distance, feeling a mix of emotions—and a touch of reluctance. She was emotional about the choice she had made, but reluctant to leave that special woman behind.
After leaving the Walmart, Chi Junluo leaped and bounded across the rooftops of B City, moving from building to building.
The Heavenly Dao had reminded her that her time in this world was running out.
Before she left, Chi Junluo planned to present her adorable heroine with a grand gift.
The B City Advanced Research Institute.
The research center was empty. The researchers had already been sent home by the military officer in charge. At this moment, the only person in the vast facility was Yi Mingchang, lying on the floor, his fate unknown.
Yi Mingchang twitched and contorted on the ground. He had been too severely injured by the high-level zombie. The viral parasites from its body had deeply invaded his system, entering his bloodstream. The foreign wind-type parasite that originally resided within him was being slaughtered by the invading parasites. The wind parasite fought back fiercely, and the two began a war inside Yi Mingchang's body, which was the cause of his extreme discomfort. Because the zombie viral parasites lived in the undead—essentially corpses—they were contaminated. This was why anyone scratched or bitten by a zombie, whether an ability user or an ordinary person, could turn. It was just that ability users, who already had various types of parasites in their bodies, had a slightly lower chance of infection.
Although Yi Mingchang was also an ability user, and a high-level one at that, he normally wouldn't have to fear the zombie viral parasites. But the one that injured him was no ordinary zombie; it was a mutated, high-level one. The powerful, mutated parasite within it was very likely to overwhelm the level-6 wind parasite in Yi Mingchang's body, causing him to become a mindless zombie.
Less than fifteen minutes after escaping the battle, he already felt dizzy and light-headed. His entire body felt weak, and the part of his arm below the wound was already starting to zombify. His arm was gradually turning a grayish-blue, and the skin was shriveling at a visible rate.
Yi Mingchang was horrified.
He didn't want to become a mindless zombie. He still had to watch his wife wake up; he still wanted to spend the rest of his life with his wife, his love! He didn't want to die! He couldn't die! He wouldn't die!
Thus, immense willpower drove him back to the research center. He deftly retrieved the golden Life No. 2 reagent. This reagent had been specially developed for his wife and contained a large number of uncontaminated parasites. He had only made a few doses for each type and now selected the wind-type Life No. 2, swiftly injecting it into himself. The previous researcher had zombified so quickly because the type of Life No. 2 he used didn't match his ability, causing the two to clash inside his body as they fought for territory. The researcher hadn't been able to withstand it and turned.
This time, Yi Mingchang himself was on the verge of turning. He was treating a dead horse as a live one, recklessly using Life No. 2 on himself as a last resort.
He quickly lost consciousness and lay twitching on the floor.
After a good half-day, Yi Mingchang slowly regained consciousness. Aside from the wound on his arm that was deep enough to see bone and the slightly shriveled limb, the rest of his body was perfectly fine. It was a case of a blind cat finding a dead mouse—he had barely succeeded.
"Hiss!" Lying on the floor, Yi Mingchang sucked in a sharp breath. The intense pain from his wound robbed him of the strength to stand. "Damn it, that really hurts." The pain made him break out in a cold sweat and curse.
"Does it hurt?" A clear, pleasant voice came from above him. "It should. Pain lets you know what it means to be alive."
The voice sounded a little familiar. Ignoring the pain in his arm, Yi Mingchang suddenly unleashed his ability, sending countless wind blades flying from his body toward the source of the voice.
He recognized it. It was the voice of his good-for-nothing daughter's accomplice! Just thinking about that wretched child made him furious! He had no intention of letting this accomplice go either!
"Tsk, tsk, so fierce," the cool voice chided. "No wonder you ended up abandoned by your wife and daughter. It's because you're just too incompetent."
Chi Junluo relentlessly mocked the pathetic man. Her internal satisfaction meter doubled.
She'd had it with this old man for a while now. How dare he bully her heroine, hurt her heroine? He must be tired of living!
"Were you trying to attack me just now?" Chi Junluo asked curiously.
Before Yi Mingchang could struggle to his feet, he felt a powerful force lift him by his limbs, floating him into mid-air.
"An ant overestimating its own strength. How laughable." Chi Junluo expressed her dissatisfaction with this man who was utterly incapable of resisting.
"Shut up, you bitch! I was an ability user when you were still just a normal person! What right do you have to judge me!" Yi Mingchang spewed vulgarities, and Chi Junluo's face instantly turned cold.
Yi Mingchang felt an immense force slam him down onto a table. His falling body smashed more than half of the Life No. 2 reagents that hadn't been put away.
The excruciating pain made the miserable ability user see stars. When he recovered enough to realize what important things he had broken, his face contorted with rage. Just as he was about to speak, he felt something block his mouth, preventing him from uttering a single word.
"This king has no desire to hear your noise. Look closely. Before you stands the one and only Zombie King in this world. To fall into this king's grasp is your good fortune. This king came today to ask you for something. Hand over what this king wants, and perhaps you'll be allowed to keep your pathetic life."
Heavenly Dao: Chi Chi is so mighty and domineering!!!
Then, Chi Junluo dragged Yi Mingchang away, disappearing into the depths of the research institute.
The first two days of travel for Yi Shuhan's convoy were quiet. The journey was smooth, and they didn't encounter any serious trouble. Aside from the captain and team members being a bit cold, everything else was fine.
They were only two days away from H City Base. The dead silence along the way had made everyone let their guard down. It wasn't until the roars of zombies, big and small, echoed from up ahead that the captain realized something was wrong. This stretch of road had been too quiet; they hadn't encountered a single zombie. They had assumed the area had already been cleared, never expecting that the zombies were waiting for them at the end of the road!
The captain's expression changed. She immediately stopped the car and gestured to the vehicles behind her. The other cars followed suit and stopped. The captain slammed the car into a sharp U-turn and sped back the way they came. The cars behind her quickly turned around as well, and the convoy frantically raced back. Bouncing around in the back of the pickup, Yi Shuhan clutched her fire axe, nervously watching for the source of the roars behind them. She didn't see the dark look in the vice-captain's eyes.
The roars of the zombies behind them grew louder. A massive horde of zombies poured out from around a corner, led by a level-4 zombie.
The vice-captain clearly saw it too and quickly informed the captain that a level-4 zombie had summoned the horde.
The captain floored the accelerator, trying to shake the swarm of zombies behind them.
Not far ahead was an intersection. Just as they approached it, another wave of zombies poured out from around the corner.
"Holy shit!!!" the captain cursed. She slammed on the brakes, bringing the car to a halt. The cars behind her, seemingly used to her driving style, also braked hard and stopped.
Sitting in the driver's seat, the captain cursed nonstop while unleashing her ability. The space in front of her was violently torn apart, and the first few dozen zombies were ripped apart at the neck by the spatial force. Their heads rolled across the ground with a series of thuds.
The zombies behind them were about to close in. The vice-captain, a fire user, quickly whipped her flames into several tendrils that wrapped around the necks of different zombies. The flames burned and constricted, and soon, more zombie heads were rolling on the ground.
The convoy slowly started moving again. The captain's modified off-road vehicle at the front viciously rammed into the zombie pile at the intersection, managing to carve out a bloody path!
Seeing the level-4 zombie about to catch up and the truck picking up speed, the vice-captain stealthily moved behind Yi Shuhan, who was standing at the rear of the truck bed. With a sudden, forceful shove, she pushed the unsuspecting Yi Shuhan off the speeding pickup. The zombies behind were just catching up, and Yi Shuhan fell right into their faces.
A sudden feeling of weightlessness washed over her. Yi Shuhan's first thought was: it's over! I'm going to fall to my death!
But unexpectedly, she first landed on the unlucky level-4 zombie, then bounced onto the ground. The entire time, layer upon layer of thick, invisible psychic energy had enveloped her, cushioning her fall twice. Yi Shuhan was completely unharmed.
From the pickup, the vice-captain watched as Yi Shuhan was swallowed by the zombie horde, a cruel smile on her lips. This wasn't the first time she had done something like this to a teammate. How many times had she escaped death by pushing an ordinary person into a zombie horde to buy time for herself and the others?
Don't blame her for being ruthless. This was the apocalypse!
Yi Shuhan landed in the middle of the zombie pile, completely bewildered. For a long moment, she couldn't process what had just happened.
