DDT - Chapter 20

Chapter 20: Zombie King × Little White Flower (19)

"You're saying H City is recruiting people with talent in bioengineering?!" Yi Shuhan exclaimed in surprise.

Yi Shuhan's slightly excited voice pulled Chi Junluo's attention back. Hearing the undisguisable anticipation in Yi Shuhan's words, Chi Junluo massaged her temples, a headache coming on.

This heroine sure was something else.

"What? Is that your major?" the female captain asked curiously.

"Mhm, yes." At the mention of her favorite subject, Yi Shuhan's eyes lit up.

The female captain let out a low laugh. "Well, that's perfect. We're heading to H City on this trip. Do you want to come with us? We can look out for each other." After speaking, the female captain's gentle, encouraging gaze fell on Yi Shuhan.

"Um…" Yi Shuhan was just about to agree when Chi Junluo suddenly grabbed her hand and pulled her to her feet.

"Let's go for a walk outside and see if there are any other useful supplies," Chi Junluo said, pulling Yi Shuhan out of the control room in a way that brooked no refusal.

The door closed behind them, blocking the curious gazes from inside.

"Sister Chi, is something wrong?" Yi Shuhan followed Chi Junluo around a shelf and stopped at a corner before asking.

"Shuhan, you want to go to H City, don't you?" Chi Junluo looked into Yi Shuhan's bright, clear eyes. Though her tone was questioning, she seemed certain of the answer Yi Shuhan would give.

As expected, "Yes. I want to go to H City. I want to give it a try. Even if I can only help a little, that would be wonderful." Yi Shuhan's eyes were filled with determination and eagerness.

"But I'm worried about you," Chi Junluo said with some hesitation. "I'm worried this is another scam. It could be a trick by this team, or it could be a conspiracy in H City."

Hearing Chi Junluo say the word "another," Yi Shuhan inevitably thought of her father. She frowned, a rare sight.

"But the world isn't full of bad people. There are always those who think of humanity's well-being," Yi Shuhan retorted. She firmly believed that even in the apocalypse, humanity still possessed its kindness.

"Are you saying the people in this team are good, just because they shared this piece of news? Or are you so sure that the people in H City are definitely good?"

"But if we don't go and find out, how will we ever know if it's true or not?" Yi Shuhan said, her cheeks puffing out slightly.

"Shuhan, I'm just worried about your safety. What does this world or these people have to do with me? I'm just afraid you'll get hurt again," Chi Junluo said, her voice laced with concern.

The Heavenly Dao was excitedly rubbing its hands and kicking its feet in her sea of consciousness: Ahhh, Chi Chi, you're so smooth!

Ignoring the Heavenly Dao's antics, Chi Junluo simply stared at Yi Shuhan.

"After all, this time, I might not be able to go with you. If you really decide to go, you could face many dangers along the way." Chi Junluo's tone was light, and even the worry from a moment ago seemed to have been a fleeting illusion. Her expression returned to its usual calm.

"Sister Chi, you…" Aren't you coming with me?

Yi Shuhan managed to stop herself just in time, the latter half of the sentence left unsaid.

That's right. She and Sister Chi had only known each other for a few days. Sister Chi had saved her so many times; she owed her several lives. What right did she have to say something like that?

To accompany someone is a kindness, not an obligation. To walk one's own path is a given.

Yi Shuhan fell silent.

Over the past few days, she had already developed a deep bond with Chi Junluo. No, it was more of a reliance. A sudden sense of alarm struck Yi Shuhan—she was far too dependent on Chi Junluo.

This wouldn't do! She was just an ordinary person. If she only knew how to rely on others, she would gradually lose her ability to be independent. In this cruel apocalypse, if she were to suddenly lose that support one day, wouldn't she become completely useless? She would have no other choice but to fend for herself until she perished.

Seeing Yi Shuhan fall into silence, Chi Junluo said nothing more. She quietly waited for Yi Shuhan to come to a decision.

Chi Junluo actually had a faint premonition. Although she had only interacted with this world's heroine for a few days, she could tell that even though the heroine was an ordinary person, she was an exceptionally independent, strong-willed girl with her own thoughts. After experiencing the cruel blow of the apocalypse and her father's betrayal, she could still think of humanity. Such rare kindness was truly remarkable.

Yi Shuhan took a deep breath, as if she had made a momentous decision.

"Sister Chi, if you have other things to do, please go ahead. Aren't you still looking for someone in B City? I'm sorry for dragging you into this." Yi Shuhan licked her lips and declared, "Sister Chi, I've decided to go to H City with this team. I studied bioengineering, so I should be able to help. I heard that H City has made a major breakthrough with the antiviral reagent. I have a feeling the apocalypse is about to end, and I want to witness that historic moment! I want to be a part of saving humanity, too!"

Hearing Yi Shuhan's decision, Chi Junluo nodded slightly in approval. The heroine, truly a noble little white flower in this apocalyptic world!

"Shuhan, I respect your choice." Chi Junluo took a small step forward and gave Yi Shuhan a hug. Yi Shuhan hugged back the woman who had helped her so much and saved her life several times.

Yi Shuhan's eyes reddened slightly.

When they separated, Chi Junluo tenderly ruffled Yi Shuhan's hair. "Shuhan, don't cry. Since you've chosen this path, forge ahead boldly. Once I find the person I'm looking for, I'll come to H City to see you!"

"Mhm!" Yi Shuhan nodded vigorously. "You have to come."

"Don't worry." Chi Junluo's gentle smile soothed Yi Shuhan's somewhat anxious heart.

"Since you've made up your mind, and I still have things to do, why don't we part ways here?" Chi Junluo patted the backpack on her back, signaling to Yi Shuhan that she was about to leave.

"Sister Chi, you're leaving now?" Yi Shuhan's voice was filled with reluctance and sadness.

"Yes. I want to find them sooner, so I can reunite with you sooner." Chi Junluo shouldered her pack and held Yi Shuhan's hand one last time. They walked to the stairwell, but Yi Shuhan clung to her hand, unwilling to let go.

Chi Junluo patted her hand. "I'm off. Oh, right, remember this: from now on, Shuhan, you are an Ability User. I've enveloped you in a protective layer of my mental power. Even high-level zombies won't be able to hurt you. Just be careful not to get schemed against by others. If anyone asks, just claim you have an ability that repels zombies. If no one asks, just keep it to yourself for now."

Hearing this, Yi Shuhan was even more moved. She rubbed her eyes and said to Chi Junluo with determination, "Don't worry, Sister Chi. I'll develop the antiviral reagent as soon as possible. Once the zombies are eliminated, I'll come find you!"

Zombie King Chi Junluo: …

"Mhm, I believe you can do it!" Chi Junluo nodded. "Well then, I'll be going. Take care!"

"Take care, Sister Chi! Goodbye!"

"Goodbye."

I'm afraid the next time we meet, we'll be on opposite sides.

Yi Shuhan returned to the control center alone. The female captain looked surprised. "Why are you back by yourself? Where's the other young lady?"

"Sister Chi still needs to find someone in B City, so she won't be joining us. Captain, I'll be in your care on the road. Don't worry, I can kill zombies too. I won't hold you back."

"Mhm, okay, no problem," the captain nodded in response.

Only after Yi Shuhan had turned and sat down on a chair in the corner to rest did a flicker of gloom cross the captain's eyes.

What their team wanted was the protection of a powerful expert like Chi Junluo! They had no need for this Yi Shuhan, who looked like an ordinary person no matter how you looked at her!

If she had known, she never would have told Yi Shuhan about H City. Now they were stuck dragging a burden along! How utterly annoying!

Unaware that she had been so inexplicably disliked, Yi Shuhan joined the team just like that.

Meanwhile, Chi Junluo, who had just left, flew back toward the B City Base with a blank expression.
