DDT - Chapter 34
Chapter 34: School Tyrant × The Pushover (11)
Several boys brazenly poked their heads in through the doorway, clearly hoping to watch the drama unfold. Chi Junluo lifted her head and swept a cold gaze over them. The moment their eyes met hers, the boys jumped in fright, goosebumps rising on their skin. They scattered in a flash, disappearing from the classroom entrance.
Two girls who had stayed behind to clean the classroom were still inside. However, they had a vague feeling that Boss Chi's gaze was sweeping over them, intentionally or not. A faint chill ran down their backs. They exchanged a look, decisively dropped their brooms, grabbed their schoolbags, and bolted from the classroom.
And so, in the vast classroom, only Chi Junluo and Yi Shuhan remained.
Seeing that everyone was gone, Yi Shuhan grew bolder. She pulled three test-like workbooks from her stack of books. "Luo Luo, these are some of the better practice tests I've used. I bought a set for you at the bookstore by the school gate during lunch. You can start with these, and once you're done, I'll get you some different ones."
Chi Junluo looked helplessly at the three rather thick workbooks Yi Shuhan placed in her hands, but she had no choice but to accept them. It was her own fault for not explicitly rejecting Yi Shuhan's proposal last night that they get into college together.
Chi Junluo forced herself not to think about the college entrance exams anymore. For now, she just needed to cherish the time she had to study and live alongside Yi Shuhan.
Chi Junluo lowered her head and rummaged through her desk for a good while before finally unearthing a pen from beneath a thick, messy pile of books.
Yi Shuhan, who had watched the entire arduous process of finding a pen, was slightly astonished. So, the rumors were true—the great School Tyrant really had no study habits to speak of.
Chi Junluo scratched her head in embarrassment, then casually opened one of the workbooks, uncapped the pen, and prepared to start.
Yi Shuhan glanced over. Chi Junluo had opened the math test. She reminded her, "Luo Luo, if there's anything you don't know or don't understand, you can ask me."
"Mhm," Chi Junluo nodded in acknowledgment. She casually tore a blank page from the front of a book to use as scratch paper and began to focus on the questions.
Yi Shuhan, who had witnessed Chi Junluo's wild maneuver of tearing out a page for scratch paper: (⊙o⊙)………
Before being drawn into these tasks of collecting the Power of the Heavenly Dao, Chi Junluo had been a working professional who had graduated from college. Dealing with mere high school coursework was no problem at all.
Yi Shuhan was also immersed in her own workbook and didn't notice Chi Junluo writing as if her pen were guided by a divine hand.
Time ticked by, second by second.
Finally, Yi Shuhan finished her own homework. She turned to look at Chi Junluo, only to find that she was already on the second page of the second practice test.
Yi Shuhan: What kind of divine speed is this?!
Sensing Yi Shuhan's gaze on her, Chi Junluo stopped writing and looked at her quizzically. "Shuhan, are you done?"
Yi Shuhan concealed her surprise and nodded. "Let me check your answers for you."
Chi Junluo handed over her test paper and slumped onto her desk, looking somewhat bored.
Yi Shuhan took out the answer key attached to the back of the workbook and began to diligently grade Chi Junluo's test with a red pen.
Chi Junluo rested her head on her right hand, which was propped on the desk, and stared intently at Yi Shuhan's face.
Her eyes were so large, their dark brown irises incredibly clear, revealing the seriousness and focus of their owner at work.
Her nose was straight and elegant—a classic beauty's nose. Her lips were a cherry red, which, paired with her flawless cheeks, made her a true beauty in the making.
Although Yi Shuhan wasn't looking in Chi Junluo's direction, she could clearly feel that gaze lingering on her. Yi Shuhan really wanted to turn and ask, Dude, what exactly are you looking at?
But she was too embarrassed to do so.
As she graded the test, Yi Shuhan's initial relaxed expression turned to shock. Then, after being shocked so many times, she grew accustomed to it and returned to a state of calm.
What happened to the School Tyrant being an unprecedented, unrivaled academic failure? What happened to the slacker School Tyrant who failed every subject, whom even the teachers had given up on saving?
After grading the entire test, School Tyrant Chi Junluo's accuracy rate was astonishingly high. She had scored 110 out of a possible 120 points!
When Yi Shuhan turned her head after finishing, she met Chi Junluo's seemingly profound eyes.
"Finished grading?" Chi Junluo asked, cupping her cheek. "How did I do?"
Yi Shuhan nearly got lost in Chi Junluo's eyes but quickly snapped back to reality. "Luo Luo, I never would have guessed you were a hidden genius!"
Yi Shuhan handed the test back to Chi Junluo. "110 points. You're amazing!"
"Why, thank you for the compliment. This humble one is honored to have earned the lady's favor~" Chi Junluo accepted the praise graciously, teasing Yi Shuhan in the process.
Yi Shuhan: "You scoundrel."
Chi Junluo: Meow meow meow???
"It's still early. Why don't you try another subject?" Yi Shuhan said to Chi Junluo as she began to check her own test paper.
"Okay." Chi Junluo casually flipped through the workbooks and pulled out the English one. Today, she intended to let Yi Shuhan get a small glimpse of her true abilities.
Since she had decided to leave the deepest impression, she might as well give her a little more hope.
Time slowly passed. Chi Junluo quickly finished a full English practice test. She twirled her pen, waiting for Yi Shuhan to grade it by hand.
This time, Yi Shuhan was grading Chi Junluo's English test. English tests were easy to grade, as they were mostly multiple-choice. After quickly marking it, Yi Shuhan took a closer look at the essay Chi Junluo had written. To her surprise, there were a few words in it that even she didn't understand!
Damn it! What kind of god-tier academic genius was this!
Chi Junluo got all the multiple-choice and fill-in-the-blank questions correct. As for the final essay, it was likely a perfect score as well.
Aside from the listening comprehension section, which she hadn't done, everything else was perfect!
Yi Shuhan handed the test back, staring at Chi Junluo resentfully. "Luo Luo, you've hidden it well, you secret genius! I never thought you had a hobby of playing the pig to eat the tiger."
"...Haha, you exaggerate, you exaggerate." Chi Junluo laughed it off, trying to move past the topic.
By the time Yi Shuhan finished grading her own test, Chi Junluo had already packed her things.
"Shuhan, it's dinnertime. Do you want to eat with me?" Chi Junluo rested her chin on her hand, watching Yi Shuhan start to pack up her homework.
"Eat dinner together? Hmm, okay." Yi Shuhan agreed without much thought. She took out her phone and sent a message to Auntie Wang, briefly explaining that she would be home after dinner, then put her phone away.
"What are we having for dinner?" Yi Shuhan asked curiously. "This is my first time eating dinner out!"
Hearing the slight excitement in Yi Shuhan's voice, Chi Junluo couldn't help but think how adorable the girl in front of her was.
Awww! Chi Junluo howled internally a few times before finally giving in to the urge. She reached out and ruffled Yi Shuhan's fluffy hair. "There's a small restaurant with pretty good food. I'll take you to try it."
"Hey, you messed up my hair!" Yi Shuhan swatted Chi Junluo's hand away. "Let's go, I'm hungry."
Chi Junluo shouldered her bag and habitually took Yi Shuhan's right hand in hers as they walked out of the classroom.
Yi Shuhan gently held Chi Junluo's hand, feeling its warmth. A sense of reassurance settled in her heart.
This comforting feeling… was this what people called a sense of security?
She liked it very much.
Chi Junluo led Yi Shuhan out of the school gates and into a deep alley to the right. After a few turns, they stopped in front of a small shop.
The shop wasn't large, but it was clean and tidy. The tables and floor gleamed, free of any grease. The decor was simple but not crude, giving off a feeling of minimalist elegance.
A few customers, all students from nearby, were seated inside. Chi Junluo led Yi Shuhan to a table by the window. A moment later, an auntie who looked like the proprietress came over with a menu, her expression exceptionally warm.
"Xiao Chi, here for dinner?" the auntie greeted them warmly as she handed them the menu. "Is this your friend? This is the first time I've seen you bring someone to eat with you."
"Yes, Auntie Li. Your food is delicious, so I brought a friend to try it," Chi Junluo replied politely, taking the menu and passing it to Yi Shuhan first. "Shuhan, see what you'd like to eat. Auntie Li's cooking is top-notch."
Auntie Li held a notepad, her eyes crinkling into a smile as she chatted with Chi Junluo while they ordered.
Yi Shuhan wasn't familiar with the food here, so she symbolically ordered one dish that piqued her curiosity before handing the menu to Chi Junluo.
Chi Junluo was clearly a regular. Without even looking at the menu, she fluently reeled off the names of several dishes. Auntie Li jotted them down and went to the back kitchen to place the order.
Although Yi Shuhan hadn't eaten out much, she could tell from the menu that this little shop was indeed a great value; the prices were very reasonable.
"Luo Luo, you seem to come here often?" Yi Shuhan rested her right hand on the table, propping up her chin as she looked at Chi Junluo curiously.
"Auntie Li is a very kind person. I usually eat here, and on weekends I'll work part-time to earn some living money," Chi Junluo nodded. There was a time when the original owner had nearly starved, but thankfully, Auntie Li had given her a chance to work and earn money.
"Luo Luo…" Yi Shuhan wanted to ask something but held back. She had wanted to ask why Chi Junluo had started working so early. But thinking of Chi Junluo's family situation, she politely kept her mouth shut.
"Hm?" Chi Junluo looked at her, curious.
"It's nothing. I'm just looking forward to trying the delicious food you mentioned," Yi Shuhan smiled, changing the subject.
The food arrived shortly. Both of them were hungry, so without another word, they picked up their chopsticks and dug in with gusto.
It had to be said, the food at the small shop was truly excellent. You could tell the chef's skills were superb.
They both ate to their hearts' content.
After the meal, Auntie Li smilingly saw them to the door. Chi Junluo watched Yi Shuhan get into a taxi, carefully noting down the license plate number. Then she waved goodbye, reminding Yi Shuhan to send her a message when she got home.
The taxi driver: …So cautious. Anyone who didn't know better would think I was planning something bad…
Once the taxi drove away, Chi Junluo turned and walked home. She hoped her deadbeat father hadn't made a mess of the house again.
