DDT - Chapter 19

Chapter 19: Zombie King × Little White Flower (18)

Only after they had "escaped with their lives" and were certain no one was chasing them did Yi Shuhan get down from Chi Junluo's arms.

Yi Shuhan's face was a little pale, still unable to pull herself away from what had just happened.

After so long in the apocalypse, she had never imagined that the creator of this whole tragedy was her own father!

She had never thought something so melodramatic would happen to her.

Thinking of the dignified and imposing image of her father from the past, and then of the poor mother she had never met, who was likely now a zombie, a sharp pain seized Yi Shuhan's heart. The taste of betrayal by a loved one was not pleasant. Now, the only person by her side was Chi Junluo, whom she had known for only a few days but who had saved her several times.

In her entire life, no one had ever been this good to her.

Yi Shuhan was beginning to feel like she couldn't be without Chi Junluo. Chi Junluo was just too good to her.

As the two walked slowly down the empty street, Yi Shuhan suddenly turned her head and asked, "Sister Chi, why are you so good to me? Are you this good to other strangers too?"

Chi Junluo was slightly surprised. She thought for a moment and said, "Remember when we first met, I said I felt like I'd seen you somewhere before? You don't really need a reason to be good to someone." Chi Junluo paused. "I'm not like this with everyone. It's only because that person is you."

"You're special. Meeting you was just like the song 'Sweet as Honey' says."

"It's you…"

It's you, it's you, the one I dreamed of is you. Chi Junluo didn't finish the sentence. She simply looked at Yi Shuhan and gave her a warm smile.

The beauty-obsessed Yi Shuhan was dazzled by that gorgeous smile. The melody of "Sweet as Honey" drifted through her mind, and her face instantly flushed. Aahhh, how is Sister Chi so good at flirting!

Seeing the two begin to "flirt," the Heavenly Dao let out a "tsk, tsk, tsk" in Chi Junluo's sea of consciousness.

"I didn't expect you to have such a knack for picking up girls," the Heavenly Dao started chattering again.

Three black lines of exasperation streaked across Chi Junluo's mind.

Chi Junluo: I don't know what you're talking about. I'm still just a child.

The two prepared to restock their supplies, following B City's main road toward the outskirts. After walking for about an hour and a half, they saw a Walmart.

This area was already near the edge of B City. The B City Base had only cleared out the zombies in the city center and the villa district. They couldn't be bothered to waste firepower clearing the countless zombies on the periphery. As long as those zombies didn't threaten the base, it was fine.

Walmart supermarkets had always been places with huge crowds. Even near the outskirts of B City, the number of people had been considerable.

Therefore, there were also a great many zombies.

Countless zombies shambled aimlessly outside the supermarket. The ground was littered with bodies, and it was impossible to tell if they belonged to zombies or unfortunate humans.

Some of the corpses looked quite fresh.

Forgive the Zombie King Chi Junluo for her definition of the word "fresh" when it came to corpses.

Chi Junluo's eyes swept over the scene, and she realized things weren't so simple.

The main entrance of the Walmart was blocked by a jumble of miscellaneous items. Outside the door were scattered zombie heads, along with severed limbs. A little further out were several crudely modified vehicles. The lead SUV had barbs and iron rods on its steel shell, some of which were impaled with severed limbs. It was clearly a vehicle used to plow a path directly through zombies.

Relying on her Zombie King's aura, Chi Junluo wasn't afraid at all. She had no worries about the two of them being surrounded by zombies.

The two of them walked brazenly through the middle of the zombie horde.

Not only did the zombies not rush them, but they actually parted to make a path.

Yi Shuhan could only feel that Chi Junluo's power was growing stronger and stronger.

After successfully reaching the main entrance, Chi Junluo used her psychic power to clear an opening just large enough for the two of them to squeeze into the supermarket. Then, she casually sealed the opening behind them.

More than a year had passed, yet the supermarket was still well-stocked. Although it was clear that some things had been taken, most of the goods were still on the shelves or scattered on the floor.

The reason was easy to imagine. When the apocalypse began, the supermarket was crowded with people. The virus broke out everywhere, and most people were quickly infected. Only a few lucky ones managed to escape the hellish supermarket alive. And even if they did escape, whether they could successfully evade the zombies outside was a huge question. As a result, a dense horde of zombies had gathered inside the supermarket.

The B City Base had considered clearing the zombies from the supermarket, but they were worried that firearms or abilities would destroy the supplies. The higher-ups had argued about it a few times but never took action. Furthermore, since the B City leadership, headed by Officer Wang, had orchestrated the apocalypse, they had prepared supplies in advance and weren't facing a shortage. Thus, they had no desire to waste troops clearing zombies and moving supplies from a distant Walmart.

There weren't as many zombies inside the supermarket as they had imagined. Layers upon layers of bodies covered the floor, clearly the result of someone having already cleared them out once.

Considering the modified vehicles parked outside, the fresh corpses on the ground, and the deliberately blocked entrance, it was likely that a team had fought their way into the supermarket in the last couple of days. To be able to kill so many zombies while under siege, this team seemed quite formidable.

The two walked to the backpack section, chose two large hiking packs, and began to wander around the first floor.

A few zombies staggered around them, some even bumping their heads into shelves before changing direction and continuing their aimless wandering. But they all seemed completely oblivious to the two women.

Amidst this bizarre scene, Chi Junluo and Yi Shuhan began searching for the supplies they needed in the eerie supermarket.

Soon, their hiking packs were more than half full. Chi Junluo scanned the area with her psychic power and, as expected, found a group of people in the second-floor control room. The team had 15 members, and unlike typical apocalypse squads, this one was almost entirely female, with only three men.

The female team leader, who was resting in the control room, suddenly felt a chill run down her spine, as if something had swept over her. She immediately became vigilant.

The others, who had been resting, were taken aback when they saw their leader assume a defensive posture and quickly asked what was wrong.

"Something just came in!" The female leader frowned. "It felt sinister. It's either a high-level ability user or a high-tier zombie."

Hearing their leader's words, several people frowned. They had just arrived in B City and had finally found a suitable place with abundant supplies to rest, even losing several team members in the process. Why were they running into more trouble already?

Several of them grabbed their weapons and gathered around the security monitors to take a look.

Many of the monitors were broken, and only a few were still functioning. They couldn't see anything.

Only high-tier zombies acted so strangely. They all broke out in a cold sweat. Although their leader and two vice-captains were powerful, both at the 5th level, the others were still ordinary people. Remembering the fate of the team members who had died at the supermarket entrance, several of the women began to tremble slightly. The guns in their hands were their only hope for survival.

Unaware that they were being mistaken for high-tier zombies, Chi Junluo and Yi Shuhan leisurely walked up the stopped escalator to the second floor. After turning a corner, they were met with the sight of several dark gun barrels and a few women with expressionless faces.

Yi Shuhan: …Is it just my day to have guns pointed at me???

Chi Junluo sharply pulled back Yi Shuhan, who was still moving forward out of inertia.

"What is the meaning of this?" Chi Junluo spoke first.

Unexpectedly, one of the women opposite them was too tense. Startled by Chi Junluo's sudden words, she reflexively pulled the trigger. The team leader and the others, whose nerves had just begun to relax upon hearing Chi Junluo's voice, saw their expressions change drastically at the loud gunshot. They were screwed!

Chi Junluo was displeased. With a wave of her hand, she caught the bullet firmly in her palm and then casually tossed it to the ground. The bullet casing hit the floor with a crisp clatter.

The team members were all stunned. They had expected a tragedy, but they never thought this cold-faced woman would be so powerful.

Chi Junluo held Yi Shuhan's hand, but this time, she didn't feel that familiar warmth. Doubt rose in Chi Junluo's heart, but the current situation left her no time to dwell on it. Yi Shuhan felt the cold touch on her left hand but didn't think much of it either.

The atmosphere was tense. In the end, the female leader took the lead and apologized. "I'm so sorry! Ladies, we were just too nervous. We felt a strong, oppressive presence just now and thought a high-tier zombie was coming, so we were standing guard here. I'm sorry, my team member was too tense and her gun went off by accident!"

"I'm so sorry, so sorry!" The woman who had fired the gun was pale with fright and apologized repeatedly.

"If that's the case, then let's forget it." Chi Junluo nodded in understanding. "We're here to gather supplies and were planning to rest in the supermarket for a while."

The leader was inwardly displeased but didn't show it. She simply lowered her gun and led everyone back to the control room.

There were plenty of chairs in the control room. Chi Junluo and Yi Shuhan chose two in a corner and sat down to rest.

The team didn't say a word, communicating only with their eyes.

Meanwhile, Chi Junluo got the information she wanted from the Heavenly Dao. She had finished collecting the Power of the Heavenly Dao in this world, which was why she hadn't felt the familiar warmth when she held Yi Shuhan's hand just now.

Chi Junluo: Why didn't you tell me? Did you have to wait for me to ask?

The Heavenly Dao mentally propped its feet up in her sea of consciousness: Well, I wanted to watch you flirt so effortlessly~

Chi Junluo:

Realizing that her mission in this world was nearing its end, with only the soul fragment contract remaining, Chi Junluo suddenly felt a little sad. The heroine was so soft and cute; she was actually a bit reluctant to leave.

While Chi Junluo was lost in thought, Yi Shuhan had somehow started chatting with the female team leader. And from that conversation, Yi Shuhan learned a crucial piece of information.

Apparently, H City had made a major breakthrough in the development of an anti-zombie virus drug. They were currently in need of biology experts, and H City was recruiting talent in bioengineering!
