DDT - Chapter 18

Chapter 18: Zombie King × Little White Flower (17)

"Heh. I was originally planning to send people out to find you after the Life No. 2 reagent was successfully developed. That would also prevent the trouble of having to track you down if you turned into a zombie and started running around aimlessly. But I never expected you to deliver yourself right to my doorstep." Yi Mingchang took down another vial of golden liquid, swirling it in his hand. "Yi Shuhan, haven't you always wanted to see your mother? Don't you wish she would wake up?"

"Now, that chance is right in front of you. I can take you to see Mingqing. As long as you're willing to become a test subject for the No. 2 reagent, we'll have a much greater chance of restoring Mingqing to normal and waking her up completely!"

At the mention of Shu Mingqing, Yi Mingchang once again fell into a state of fanaticism.

Yi Shuhan watched him with cold eyes, knowing full well that Yi Mingchang was once again using her mother as bait to manipulate her.

The offer to see her mother was tempting, but she could forget about being a test subject for some damn No. 2 reagent. No matter how he dressed it up, it was still just a zombie virus concoction.

The research institute's alarm was still blaring when the belated sound of orderly, urgent footsteps finally reached them from outside the main door.

Chi Junluo stood in the research center, holding Yi Shuhan's hand, her brow slightly furrowed. She could sense an army, armed to the teeth, surrounding the building.

Yi Mingchang heard the footsteps as well, and a look of obvious delight spread across his face. His men had finally arrived.

It seemed his efforts to stall Yi Shuhan with idle chatter hadn't been in vain.

The footsteps quickly reached the entrance, and a group of heavily armed soldiers appeared at the doorway.

The man in the lead was the same poker-faced man who had guided them the day before. But now, an ugly expression had appeared on his face.

"Mr. Yi, we need you to come out at once! The base… is under attack by a high-level zombie!" the poker-faced man said immediately upon stepping into the research center. He ignored the strange atmosphere in the room. All he knew was that, besides Officer Wang, Yi Mingchang was the most powerful Ability User in the entire base. The base was now facing annihilation, with most of the troops and Ability Users struggling to fend off the high-level zombie's assault on the surface. He had also received the institute's alarm, which was why he had managed to divert a small contingent of troops to investigate and request Yi Mingchang's assistance.

"A high-level zombie?" Yi Mingchang asked, puzzled. "Where's Officer Wang?"

"Mr. Yi, we've lost contact with Officer Wang. We implore you to help drive back the high-level zombie," the poker-faced man pleaded again.

"Fine. I'll go up and see what's happening. You and your men keep Yi Shuhan here—alive. As for the other woman, kill her if you can." Yi Mingchang took off his white lab coat and slapped a button on the desk. The golden experimental reagents retracted deep into the wall, apparently well-protected.

Chi Junluo remained silent, merely raising an eyebrow. It seemed Shuhan's father had a lot of confidence in these soldiers.

Yi Mingchang passed through the ranks of soldiers and disappeared down the corridor. The soldiers raised their guns, watching Chi Junluo and Yi Shuhan warily. The other researchers had already slipped away through a small side door. Now, only the two of them were left in the entire research center.

Facing so many dark muzzles for the first time, Yi Shuhan was terrified.

The shocks she had endured today were simply too great. The image of Yi Mingchang as her father had completely collapsed in her mind, utterly shattered.

She had never imagined that the father she had revered for so many years could be such a shameless, selfish, and dark person.

And today, she was about to drag the innocent Sister Chi, who had been swept up in all this, down with her.

Although she had witnessed Chi Junluo's incredible power, facing such a vast number of high-tech weapons must surely pose a huge problem for her. No matter how strong Sister Chi was, she was still only human, made of flesh and blood!

Chi Junluo: Not really.

"Sister Chi, I'm so sorry. I'm the one who got you into this!" Yi Shuhan turned away, lowering her head, unable to meet Chi Junluo's gaze.

Chi Junluo found it a little amusing. She ruffled Yi Shuhan's hair and comforted her, "Silly girl, don't overthink it. Trust me, I can get you out of here. I'm no ordinary Ability User."

Yi Shuhan looked up, her bright, watery eyes fixed on Chi Junluo. "But there are too many of them. We can't get out."

"Too many? Then we'll just have to carve a bloody path out!" Chi Junluo said arrogantly, glancing sideways at the soldiers.

She had wanted to say that these soldiers were innocent people, too. But looking at the threatening, blood-scented muzzles of their guns, she knew that if it wasn't them who died today, it would be her and Sister Chi.

In a life-or-death situation, even if Yi Shuhan was usually a bleeding heart, right now she could only think of her own survival.

After all, if she were dead, who would her compassion be for? The ghosts?

In the face of brutal slaughter, sympathy was worth less than dog shit. Besides, these soldiers were now their opposition, their enemies, and they posed a direct threat to their lives. Yi Shuhan pressed her lips together and said no more.

Her debt to Sister Chi was growing ever larger.

A bloodthirsty chill emanated from Chi Junluo's eyes. A powerful psychic field erupted from her body, forcing the soldiers to stumble back a large step, crashing into the men behind them.

The soldiers were horrified. They chambered their rounds in unison, their guns aimed squarely at Chi Junluo. The poker-faced man slowly raised his hand. The soldiers' hands trembled slightly, their palms breaking out in a cold sweat. This was the first time they had faced a woman who was more intimidating than a high-level zombie.

Chi Junluo released Yi Shuhan's hand and stretched her limbs.

The poker-faced man slammed his hand down. "Fire!"

Receiving the signal, the soldiers reflexively pulled their triggers.

Bang! Bang! Bang! The deafening roar of dozens of guns firing at once filled the air.

In that instant, Chi Junluo formed a massive, solid shield with her thick psychic energy. Then, with a graceful turn, she scooped up the stunned Yi Shuhan, supporting her by the back of her knees and her shoulders, and lifted her into a princess carry.

The next second, countless bullets flew toward them. But to the soldiers' astonishment, the bullets stopped dead in mid-air, about twenty or thirty centimeters away from the two women, as if stuck in thick glue. Then, they clattered to the ground. In the span of just two breaths, the floor was littered with spent casings.

Before Yi Shuhan could even process being swept into Chi Junluo's warm embrace, she felt a slight vibration as Chi Junluo began to run.

A powerful psychic force shot straight into the crowd, violently shoving the soldiers to either side. A swath of them fell in an instant, clearing a path just wide enough for one person to pass.

The poker-faced man cursed under his breath. Channeling his ability, he sent several ice blades flying toward the running Chi Junluo.

But it was useless.

The soldiers quickly recovered, picked up their guns, and got back on their feet to chase after her.

Bullets sprayed—rat-tat-tat-tat—but not a single one hit them.

The soldiers: Damn it! These two are freaks!

Regardless of the curses running through the soldiers' minds, Chi Junluo quickly reached the elevator shaft.

The elevator had long been broken. As a wind-type Ability User, Yi Mingchang could use air currents to ascend. Without that ability, Chi Junluo and her companion should have no way to escape now!

The poker-faced man rejoiced inwardly and was about to gloat, but in the next second, his eyes widened in shock.

A faintly visible, transparent phantom lifted Chi Junluo and slowly carried her up the elevator shaft.

The group, without an elevator, could only stare dumbfounded as the two women disappeared at the top of the shaft.

Only then did they snap out of it, quickly changing course to pursue them through another exit.

But it was too late.

By the time they reached the surface, there wasn't a trace of Chi Junluo or Yi Shuhan to be found.

Zombie crows cawed as they flew over the soldiers' heads.

How fitting.

Chi Junluo flew out of B City Base, carrying Yi Shuhan. Nestled in Chi Junluo's arms, Yi Shuhan felt a strange sense of security. Her mind, sluggish from the overwhelming series of shocks, once again failed to notice that Chi Junluo's chest lacked the heartbeat a normal person should have.

B City Base.

At that moment, for the first time since its smooth establishment, B City Base was suffering a devastating attack from a high-level zombie.

Without any warning, a pitch-black, liquid-like zombie appeared on the streets of B City Base, moving erratically. Before people could even register what the dark thing was, it had enveloped someone's body. A few seconds later, only a skeleton remained.

The surrounding people realized with horror that this was a new type of zombie! And it looked to be a high-level one!

Ordinary people screamed and scattered in terror, while Ability Users quickly gathered, warily activating their powers.

Perhaps stimulated by the screams of the civilians, the pitch-black creature let out a roar and charged toward the assembled Ability Users.

The Ability Users immediately unleashed their attacks. Countless water orbs, balls of electricity, ice blades, and tree vines flew densely toward the new zombie.

But it was useless. The zombie's surface was like extremely elastic rubber, deflecting all the abilities and sending them flying elsewhere.

Only a spatial ability managed to cut a large gash in its body, but the next second, the liquid-like zombie fused back together as if it hadn't been harmed at all. It didn't slow down, quickly reaching the Ability Users. Two of them, overconfident in their powers, failed to dodge in time. The liquid zombie splattered across their faces, and they collapsed limply without even a scream. A moment later, they were reduced to white bones.

The other Ability Users screamed and fled. Yi Mingchang arrived just in time, and together, they engaged the liquid zombie in a fierce battle.

Two long hours passed. The Ability Users collapsed to the ground in exhaustion, leaving only Yi Mingchang to struggle against the new zombie, which was also showing signs of fatigue.

Suddenly, the zombie turned and fled. Without a second thought, Yi Mingchang gave chase.

The zombie abruptly spun around and lunged at him. Yi Mingchang reflexively used his ability, a powerful gust of air throwing him to the side to dodge the direct attack. Seeing its attack had failed, the zombie's movements slowed, its power clearly depleted. The liquid form gradually stiffened, shrinking to the size of an adult human. A bluish-black face was revealed. Yi Mingchang froze. Wasn't that Officer Wang's face?!

The zombie roared at Yi Mingchang, then bounded away from B City Base in a few quick leaps.

Still in shock, Yi Mingchang suddenly felt a sharp, delayed pain in his arm.

A sense of foreboding washed over him. He raised his arm and saw a corrosive wound, so deep the bone was visible.

He had been wounded by the zombie!

His abilities drained, Yi Mingchang clutched his wound and staggered back to the research center. His vision swam with black spots, and his head throbbed with pain. He rushed to the desk and slammed the button, and the golden Life No. 2 reagent emerged from the wall once more.

Yi Mingchang snatched a vial. He drew the contents into a syringe and jabbed it fiercely into his own arm.

Then he collapsed to the floor, unconscious.
