DDT - Chapter 12

Chapter 12: Zombie King × Little White Flower (11)

Late at night, Yi Shuhan was already fast asleep on the left side of the large bed.

As the Zombie King, Chi Junluo had no need for sleep. She lay on the right side of the bed near the window, listening to the rhythmic, steady rise and fall of Yi Shuhan's breathing. For some reason, she felt a sense of peace in her heart.

This must be the heroine effect, she thought. She has a comforting warmth about her.

Chi Junluo turned her head to look out the uncurtained window. Outside were dilapidated, abandoned buildings and a city shrouded in deathly silence.

The moon was not visible.

If Yi Shuhan had been awake at that moment, she would have discovered that Chi Junluo was not breathing at all.

The room fell into another kind of eerie silence.

"Sigh," Chi Junluo let out a breath.

The Heavenly Dao didn't need rest either. It was usually quite noisy, so to quiet her own mind, Chi Junluo had spent the last few days erecting a mental wall in her sea of consciousness, blocking out its chattering voice.

On this rare, quiet night, she suddenly remembered the Heavenly Dao, which she had nearly forgotten in a corner of her mind. The night was long, and since she didn't need to sleep, she naturally wanted to find someone to talk to. Well, it didn't have to be a person.

Chi Junluo dismantled the wall in her sea of consciousness.

The Heavenly Dao, also not needing rest, had been blocked by Chi Junluo for several days. It had been itching to speak but had nowhere to vent, building up a fair bit of resentment. It was dissatisfied with Chi Junluo's "cold shoulder." They were two grasshoppers on the same rope; how could Chi Junluo just block it whenever she pleased!

Seeing the wall in the sea of consciousness suddenly disappear, the Heavenly Dao heard Chi Junluo's sigh.

"So young, what are you sighing for?" the Heavenly Dao said, disgruntled. It had been blocked for so many days and hadn't even complained yet, but here was Chi Junluo, sighing first.

"Heavenly Dao, how is the collection of the Power of the Heavenly Dao coming along?" Chi Junluo asked.

"Tsk, you have the nerve to ask me? You locked This Deity in a dark room. How would This Deity know how much you've collected?" the Heavenly Dao's indignant voice echoed from her sea of consciousness.

Chi Junluo was a little surprised. "I just wanted to mute you… How did that turn into locking you in a dark room?"

"Was that just muting?! You blocked This Deity entirely! I couldn't get a single word through to you!" the Heavenly Dao whined pitifully. "This Deity is so pathetic… whimper, whimper, whimper…"

Hearing the familiar whimpering sound, the corner of Chi Junluo's eye twitched involuntarily.

"If you were less noisy, I wouldn't block you," Chi Junluo said.

"Fine, fine, fine!" The Heavenly Dao was furious. In all its long existence as a Heavenly Dao, this was the first time a human had been able to defy its will.

It, the magnificent Heavenly Dao, had been locked in a dark room by a mere human. This was against the rules!

The Heavenly Dao wasn't stupid. It could sense that Chi Junluo held a secret it couldn't see through. Recalling how it had previously been unable to discern her special fate, the Heavenly Dao became even more certain of its suspicions.

With the barrier in the sea of consciousness gone, the Heavenly Dao could once again perceive the outside world.

"The Power of the Heavenly Dao is almost fully collected. You've been quite proactive," the Heavenly Dao answered with great satisfaction, observing the amount of power Chi Junluo had gathered and the small amount remaining on Yi Shuhan's left hand. As it continuously absorbed the Power of the Heavenly Dao from Chi Junluo's body, it let out a contented sigh.

Chi Junluo frowned at the sound. Why does that sound like someone practicing some evil cultivation technique?

The Heavenly Dao: …

"By the way, Heavenly Dao, since the power is almost collected, what did you mean before about contracting the heroine's soul fragment?" Chi Junluo recalled what the Heavenly Dao had said before she entered this world. Now that she had time, she asked out of curiosity.

"Because the original world was struck, creating a massive tear in spacetime, the heroine's fragments fell into other worlds. Since the fragments reside in the bodies of people in other worlds, they can't be retrieved unless the host dies. You must form a contract with the fragment to prevent it from entering the host world's six paths of reincarnation after the host's death. Once a fragment enters a world's reincarnation cycle, it can never be recovered!" the Heavenly Dao explained in a rush. "The way to form the contract is to make the heroine generate a sufficiently strong emotion. The moment that emotion is produced, the contract will be complete, binding her soul fragment. That way, after she dies in this world, her fragment won't enter reincarnation. And once I have enough Power of the Heavenly Dao, I can successfully retrieve these fragments! She seems to trust you a lot right now, so keep it up!" The Heavenly Dao was very pleased, feeling that the plot's progression had exceeded its expectations.

Chi Junluo turned her head and looked at the soundly sleeping Yi Shuhan. She asked in her sea of consciousness, "Why can't I just end the heroine's life directly and take the fragment?"

The Heavenly Dao jumped in fright at her words and immediately shouted, "Get rid of that dangerous thought! Taking the fragment is impossible! The character you possess in each world cannot do anything that goes against their persona! Otherwise, you'll be discovered and expelled by that world's Heavenly Dao. The moment you try to harm the heroine, you'll be found out. You'll be kicked out of the world before you can even get the fragment. By then, the heroine will also be dead, and the fragment will enter that world's reincarnation cycle, lost forever!" The Heavenly Dao paused, then said sternly, "Besides, you've already harmed her once! Do you want to make the same mistake again?!"

The Heavenly Dao's tone was severe, but it would never admit that without enough of its own power, it couldn't retrieve the fragments anyway… ╯^╰

"But in this world, I'm the Zombie King. Killing an ordinary person wouldn't be out of character, would it?" Chi Junluo wasn't ready to give up.

The Heavenly Dao was exasperated. "I told you, don't even think about it! Your ending in this world is to be killed by the heroine with the reagent. Therefore, you cannot kill her, because you are meant to be killed by her. If you kill her, how can she kill you? So, the moment you try to kill her, you'll be breaking character, and then it's game over for us! If This Deity's heroine fragments are gone, how is This Deity supposed to live! Whimper, whimper, whimper…" As it spoke, the Heavenly Dao started whimpering again in her sea of consciousness.

Chi Junluo had no choice but to retract her dangerous idea. She thought to herself, So I have to make the heroine feel a strong emotion towards me at the end to successfully form the contract. What counts as a strong emotion?

The Heavenly Dao had just said that Yi Shuhan already trusted her a lot. If she were to betray that trust, wouldn't that be a huge shock?

It seemed that revealing her identity at the right moment was a pretty good option.

Chi Junluo stared into the dead silence outside the window, lost in thought. She let the Heavenly Dao chatter away in her sea of consciousness. This time, she didn't block it again. Otherwise, she felt the Heavenly Dao would be a bit pitiful, all alone and forlorn in her mind. She might as well keep it company.

The Heavenly Dao: ??? Who are you calling pitiful???

Time passed with Chi Junluo in a daze and Yi Shuhan fast asleep.

Soon, the sky began to brighten.

Just as Yi Shuhan woke up and Chi Junluo was preparing to leave with her, a series of loud knocks—"Bang, bang, bang"—came from the door.

Yi Shuhan immediately became alert. Chi Junluo scanned the area outside the door with her psychic power and found no threat. She gently patted Yi Shuhan's head. "Don't be afraid."

Yi Shuhan had just woken up, her eyes still hazy with a thin layer of mist. Chi Junluo's gaze darkened slightly. She told Yi Shuhan to wake up properly while she went to open the door.

Outside stood two squads of soldiers, led by an expressionless man.

Seeing Chi Junluo open the door, the man asked, "Excuse me, are you Miss Yi Shuhan?"

Chi Junluo looked him up and down and asked coldly, "Who are you?"

"Miss, we are here under the orders of Mr. Yi Mingchang from the B City Base's Advanced Research Institute to escort Miss Yi Shuhan home," the stoic man replied in a business-like tone, unfazed by Chi Junluo's displeasure.

"Father?" At some point, Yi Shuhan had appeared behind Chi Junluo, peeking out with a questioning look.

"You must be Miss Yi Shuhan. Your father has ordered us to take you home." The stoic man's expression remained like a pool of stagnant water, even upon seeing his target.

"Did Father really say that?" Yi Shuhan's voice held a hint of joy.

"Yes, Miss. Please come with us." The stoic man paused, then looked at Chi Junluo. "And you, Miss. Please come with us as well. Mr. Yi wishes to express his gratitude for your protection of Miss Yi Shuhan and is willing to provide you with a high-class residence. Please accompany us."

Chi Junluo turned her head and saw Yi Shuhan looking at her, her eyes shining with excitement and joy. Her heart softened, and she nodded in agreement. "Okay."

"Oh, right, Sister Chi, weren't you looking for someone too? Once we get back and settle in, I'll help you look," Yi Shuhan said happily, hugging Chi Junluo's arm. Her father had personally sent people to find her, which meant he still cared. He wasn't so cold after all. Her father had always been her entire world, and receiving his concern was enough to make her feel content.

"We'll talk about that later. I'll go home with you first." Looking for someone? Chi Junluo had completely forgotten about that excuse. If Yi Shuhan hadn't brought it up, she probably would have never thought of it again. She was a Zombie King; what family could she possibly have to find? She felt drained.

Seeing Chi Junluo agree to go home with her, Yi Shuhan quickly packed a few small things. Then, together with Chi Junluo, she followed the two squads of soldiers toward the Advanced Research Institute.

The stoic man had the soldiers lead the way while he fell to the back of the group. He activated his communicator, and once the person on the other end answered, he said in a low voice, "Reporting to Officer Wang, Target 1 and Target 2 are en route to the Advanced Research Institute."

"You've done well." Officer Wang smiled. He turned his head to look at his computer screen, where a video was playing. It was the woman he dreamed of possessing.
