DDT - Chapter 111
Chapter 111: Tycoon's Daughter (19)
It was the first day of the new year. New Year's Eve had passed, and a new year had arrived. The people of Huaping City had stayed up all night for the vigil and were utterly exhausted. On the first day of the new year, no one wanted to rush about; they all burrowed back into their quilts, lost in their dreams.
As the sky gradually brightened, a hazy white mist shrouded the quiet streets. A thick layer of snow covered the stone-paved roads and the rooftops of the buildings along them. It was the heaviest snow Huaping City had seen in years.
Chi Junluo had left the Yi Estate early. She and Yi Shuhan had set off fireworks for a long time the night before, then built a snowman and had a snowball fight in the snow. Perhaps due to the physical exertion, Yi Shuhan, who was a young lady after all, couldn't help but feel tired despite having trained for over two months. Though reluctant, she was eventually coaxed into bed by Chi Junluo. Craving the wonderful sense of contentment and security she felt with Chi Junluo, she insisted on pulling Chi Junluo into her bed with her. Holding her Ah Yan, she slept especially soundly.
Before dawn, Chi Junluo carefully moved Yi Shuhan's arms and legs from around her body, quietly washed up, and slipped out.
At that moment, Huaping City was silent and still. In front of many homes stood lopsided snowmen cobbled together by children.
By the time she reached the Secret Party's training ground, the thin mist in the city was beginning to dissipate.
A large number of people had gathered at the training ground.
With war imminent, the comrades of the Secret Party dared not let their guard down, even on the first day of the new year. On New Year's Eve, many had still been rushing between the various Japanese Army strongholds outside Huaping City.
On New Year's Day, many members of the organization returned to the Secret Party's base in Huaping City without stopping, bringing back a great deal of useful information.
The Japanese Army had been making frequent movements recently. Many of their troops stationed in dilapidated cities had begun to assemble, preparing to move south.
Provisions must move before the troops. The Japanese Army's supplies and food were already on the road, and it wouldn't be long before their forces followed. The purpose of this Secret Party meeting was to assign tasks for intercepting the Japanese supply lines and cutting off the path between the Japanese Army and their supply units.
By nine in the morning, the sun had broken through the clouds, its light spilling into every corner of Huaping City. The air was still chilly, and the white puffs of breath people exhaled drifted upward. Nearly all the members of the Secret Party had arrived.
Several of the Secret Party's leaders divided the people into groups, then led them into different command rooms to assign missions.
Chi Junluo was assigned to the command room for the mission to cut off the Japanese Army from its transport units.
Chi Junluo hesitated slightly. She felt her bond with the heroine was more or less sufficient, but she didn't know how the collection of the Power of the Heavenly Dao was progressing. For the past few months, she had done her best to initiate physical contact with Yi Shuhan, but she had no idea if it had been effective. That damned Heavenly Dao had been gone for so long, leaving her to clean up this mess!
A total of twenty people were assigned to the same command room as Chi Junluo. The person in charge spread a map out on a blackboard and used a long, thin stick to point at several locations marked in red, carefully explaining the places their mission team needed to remember.
All of the missions this time were extremely difficult, with high stakes and great challenges. The slightest mistake could cost them their lives. Therefore, every Secret Party member in each command room was listening intently and taking note of important points.
If these major, collective missions were all successful, the chances of victory for the Dragon Kingdom in the upcoming war against the Japanese Army outside Huaping City would increase dramatically. Thus, no matter what, the members of the Secret Party had to do everything in their power to complete their tasks, even if it meant sacrificing their own lives!
The leader took over an hour to explain all the details of the mission. Within this mission team, Chi Junluo was the only military instructor from the Huaping City Secret Party, so it was only natural that she would lead the operation.
After receiving the relevant documents from the leader, Chi Junluo reviewed them carefully before assigning the various tasks. A major collective mission was never a one-person job. Only when everyone in the team performed their duties could the mission be completed perfectly.
Once the team's tasks were assigned, they had to go collect their equipment. The team members left the command room one by one. Chi Junluo organized the mission documents and stored them away before leaving herself.
The moment she stepped out, Chi Junluo saw the young Miss Yi, with whom she had shared a bed last night, leaning against the wall in the corridor, her arms crossed over her chest.
Needless to say, she was waiting for her.
Chi Junluo's steps faltered for a moment. She sighed inwardly and walked over to Yi Shuhan.
"Shuhan, why didn't you sleep in a little longer?"
Yi Shuhan glanced at her, a hint of dissatisfaction in her eyes. "If I had slept in this morning and missed this mission, would Ah Yan have snuck off on her own again? And come back covered in injuries?"
Chi Junluo was at a loss for words. That was indeed what she had been thinking. Although this mission was crucial and its success would affect the outcome of the final war, she didn't know when the Heavenly Dao would return. Her original plan was to complete this mission, stay in this world for a while longer until the Heavenly Dao came back, and then depart during the final battle.
Seeing Chi Junluo's silence, Yi Shuhan took it as a tacit admission. She grew angry. This person had trained her so diligently for months, yet when it came time for a mission, she hadn't even considered including her. Was she just trying to humor her?
Thus, Yi Shuhan declared resolutely, "Ah Yan, I'm going on this mission too!"
Hearing Yi Shuhan's words, Chi Junluo snapped back to her senses. She reflexively refused, "No, this mission is very dangerous. The few of us are enough. Too many people will make it easy to be exposed."
Yi Shuhan turned her head away and huffed, "I was trained by Ah Yan personally. Don't you trust me? I won't hold you back!"
Chi Junluo couldn't win against her, so she had to resort to a delaying tactic. "It's not impossible for you to go, but how will you explain it to your father? This mission won't be over in a day or two. How could your father possibly agree to you disappearing for so many days?"
Seeing Yi Shuhan freeze, Chi Junluo softened her tone. "If you can get past your father, then it's not impossible for you to come along."
Yi Shuhan hesitated, her head lowered, clearly trying to think of an excuse that would allow her to leave the city for a while.
"Go back and think about it for now. If you figure something out, come find me at Wanxing Restaurant."
Chi Junluo added a few more brief instructions and then left in a hurry. She still had much to do before the mission.
On the first day of the new year, the entire Secret Party was bustling with activity from early in the morning.
Yi Shuhan called for a car and swayed back to the Yi Estate. She sat on a swing in the back garden, earnestly trying to think of an excuse, a reason that would allow her to leave the city openly.
The mission was just one day away. If she couldn't come up with a reasonable excuse and get past her father, she could forget about going.
In Huaping City, everything seemed to be proceeding as usual. This war-torn world was developing according to its own rhythm. However, in the distant Upper Realm, everything had fallen into a strange atmosphere.
The Upper Realm, which the Heavenly Daos of various worlds referred to as the Upper God Realm, was, as its name implied, the world where the Upper Gods lived. Like other worlds, the Upper Realm had a ruler, whom the Upper Gods called the Main God. The Main God's godhood was the most powerful; the Main God commanded all other gods and presided over all worlds.
The Heavenly Dao of each small world might only have one chance in its entire existence to stay in the Upper Realm—when they obtained their godhood and were assigned to their own small world.
The lifespan of an Upper God could be described as eternal. Almost all of them were born when the Upper Realm was first formed. The Upper Gods were born out of the needs of the Upper Realm, each with their own purpose and function. Their godhood was innate, a "birthmark" etched into their very being.
After an unknown number of eons, the Upper Gods gradually developed consciousness. With consciousness came desire, with desire came conflict, and with conflict came war. When the gods discovered that they could seize the godhood of others and make it their own, the Upper Realm began to spiral out of control. That was the first recorded Battle of the Gods in the divine realm.
Because the Upper Gods were born from the needs of the Upper Realm, when the first Battle of the Gods reached a fever pitch, the realm could no longer bear the rampant divine power and the mindless, life-or-death struggles of the gods. Thus, out of necessity, the most powerful god was born to rule over the entire divine realm.
According to the images displayed by the Ancient Mirage Stone, which recorded the birth and development of the divine realm, a celestial phenomenon occurred at the height of the Battle of the Gods. A dazzling golden light gathered among the warring deities. Not a single god could see what was inside the golden light; they only felt a wave of divine power with a world-destroying aura radiate from its center, sending them all flying. When the gods came to their senses, the golden light still hovered in the same spot.
The gods merely thought a rare treasure had appeared and attacked, attempting to claim it for themselves. But to their shock, all their attacks were absorbed. Then, a pressure that made the gods' blood run cold covered the entire divine realm, pinning every single one of them to the ground. They weren't kneeling; their entire bodies, from their faces to their feet, were pressed flat against the ground of the divine realm, unable to move an inch.
Some gods who were already heavily injured shattered under the pressure, their divine power dissipating. Their godhood was absorbed by the golden light, and in the end, not even their consciousness remained. They were truly and utterly annihilated.
The gods were all terrified. They had spent countless ages cultivating their consciousness and godhood, only to be completely crushed and stripped of it by this mysterious golden light in a single encounter.
It was terrifying beyond measure!
Soon, a god could no longer withstand the pressure and begged for mercy, stating they would immediately withdraw from the battle. As soon as they spoke, the pressure lessened significantly. That god immediately stood up and fled with their divine power.
More and more gods found themselves unable to hold on, begging for mercy on the verge of their divine power collapsing.
In the end, the gods left the plains of the Battle of the Gods in terror and returned to their own territories, not daring to take a single step out for many eons.
And that golden light became a painful psychological trauma that the gods were unwilling to recall.
