DDT - Chapter 8
Chapter 8: Zombie King × Little White Flower (7)
The journey to B City went smoothly. Relying on her powerful mental abilities and her status as the Zombie King, Chi Junluo dispersed zombies of all levels along their route.
After a full day of driving, the car's fuel tank was nearly empty.
Chi Junluo found the nearest gas station on the car's GPS. With her precise driving, the car managed to hold out until it reached the station two kilometers away.
Chi Junluo parked by the pump and got out to refuel. Feeling she should contribute, Yi Shuhan also got out and began to cautiously survey the area.
The gas station was surprisingly quiet. Several zombie corpses lay scattered outside, their heads smashed open and crystal cores evidently removed.
On the station's eastern wall, Yi Shuhan found a fire axe and two slender iron rods.
The fire axe was a little heavy. Before the apocalypse, Yi Shuhan would have struggled to wield it. But now, after more than a year of surviving this cruel new world, she was a different person. Any ordinary human who had made it this far had their own set of skills.
Yi Shuhan was a prime example. She was most proficient with iron rods and fire axes, and her strength now was far beyond that of the delicate girl she once was.
Meanwhile, Chi Junluo had filled the car's tank. She then filled two large canisters with extra fuel and stored them in the trunk and back seat, just in case. Who knew when they would find another gas station?
Yi Shuhan returned to the car, her "weapons" in hand. Seeing Yi Shuhan's expression, which seemed to say 'with these rods, I can conquer the world,' Chi Junluo found it rather amusing. A slight smile touched her lips. "Shuhan, with me around, the zombies won't be able to get near you. What do you need so many iron rods for?"
Yi Shuhan hefted the iron rod and fire axe, replying with great seriousness, "This is the apocalypse. I can't always rely on Sister Chi, can I? We'll have to part ways eventually, and I don't want to be a burden on this trip. I may be an ordinary person, but I'm still capable of killing these disgusting pieces of trash."
Hearing the heroine call zombies "disgusting trash," Chi Junluo, the Zombie King herself, couldn't help but feel an eye twitch. By that logic, wouldn't that make her the King of Trash???
She didn't argue with Yi Shuhan. It was good for the heroine to have a skill to fall back on—better than nothing.
As it was getting late, Chi Junluo took Yi Shuhan's left hand and led her on a walk nearby, ostensibly to search for supplies, but actually to secretly gather the Power of the Heavenly Dao.
Yi Shuhan realized that in just two short days, she had grown to love the warmth of holding Sister Chi's hand. It made her happy, yet she worried about becoming too attached to this warmth that someone else was so freely offering.
Holding hands, the two of them strolled over to a small convenience store to the west of the gas station.
A convenience store—a place rich with supplies. Realizing they were running low on bottled water in the car, Chi Junluo decided they should go in and grab a couple of cases, along with some "rations" for the road.
Chi Junluo wasn't concerned about the few people hiding inside. They posed no threat to her whatsoever.
The store's main entrance was shut tight. After fiddling with it for a moment, Yi Shuhan realized it had been locked from the inside.
Yi Shuhan knocked politely on the glass door and waited for a response.
After a long moment, just as Yi Shuhan was about to knock again, a man with an honest-looking face appeared behind the glass. He eyed Yi Shuhan and Chi Junluo warily and asked, "What do you want?"
Seeing that the man looked simple and honest, not like a bad person, Yi Shuhan replied, "Hello, we're just passing through and wanted to grab some bottled water. We're running low in our car. Is that alright?"
The man blinked, looked the two of them up and down once more, and then nodded. He silently unlocked the door before turning and disappearing among the aisles without another word.
Although Yi Shuhan had a vague sense that something was off about the man, she didn't dwell on it, attributing it to the typical mistrust between people in the apocalypse.
Holding Chi Junluo's hand, Yi Shuhan entered the small store, and the two of them headed straight for the bottled water aisle.
Many of the lights inside were broken, casting the store in dimness. The occasional crackle of sparking wires echoed through the space. Two aisles of shelves were toppled over, their contents scattered and trampled, suggesting a fierce struggle had taken place.
Yi Shuhan didn't think much of it, assuming it was simply the aftermath of the man's fight with zombies.
When they reached the water aisle, they let go of their tightly clasped hands. For a moment, Yi Shuhan felt a sudden sense of emptiness.
She gave her head a little shake to clear the strange feeling, then bent down to grab a case of water. Chi Junluo also bent over, her slender arms lifting another case.
Suddenly, a faint whooshing sound cut through the air. Yi Shuhan's ears barely caught it, and she instantly grew alert. She had just enough time to turn around to see several thick, vine-like tendrils whipping toward her and Chi Junluo out of the darkness.
Yi Shuhan could only widen her eyes in shock, blinking reflexively as the tendrils struck. Chi Junluo, however, remained completely unhurried. She stood up calmly, still holding the case of water, and slowly turned.
Yi Shuhan thought she was done for. She had no time to dodge, not even enough to drop the case of water she was holding.
Just in the nick of time, Yi Shuhan watched in amazement as the massive tendril struck the air a dozen centimeters in front of her, as if blocked by an invisible barrier. The tip of the tendril shattered on impact, leaving her completely unharmed.
Several more tendrils lashed out, but every single one was stopped by the same invisible wall. Yi Shuhan stared in astonishment before glancing at the perfectly composed Chi Junluo beside her. She knew, then, that this was Chi Junluo's doing.
After failing repeatedly, the tendrils thrashed about in frustration, knocking over several nearby shelves. The man with the honest face from before came into view, only now he looked utterly repulsive.
Green vines erupted from his body, thrashing menacingly in the air.
No wonder he'd been able to kill all those zombies outside. He had to be at least a mid-level wood-type Ability User.
"Heh heh, little ladies, why don't you just give up quietly? I might even show you a good time!" the man sneered. As expected, a filthy mouth couldn't utter decent words. "I've got food and water here. If you're willing to be my wives, I can keep you safe in this apocalypse. I'll give you food, I'll give you drink!"
Chi Junluo stood her ground, perfectly composed. Do all men in this apocalypse get this inflated ego the second they get powers? she thought. His designs on other women were none of her business, but extending his claws toward her and the heroine was intolerable.
"In your dreams," Chi Junluo said softly, her cool voice carrying through the store. Yi Shuhan then watched as Chi Junluo gave a casual wave of her hand, and the arrogant wood-type Ability User was sent flying through the glass wall, landing hard on the ground outside.
The man cried out in pain.
Yi Shuhan finally snapped out of her daze, her delicate brows furrowed in anger. This time, she took matters into her own hands. She returned to the car, grabbed an iron rod, and walked over to the scumbag, viciously crippling his arms and legs.
Ignoring the man, who had passed out from the pain, the two of them carried their two cases of water and some rations back to the car. Under the cover of darkness, Chi Junluo drove away from the wretched little gas station, leaving the immobilized, trouble-seeking man behind.
What Yi Shuhan didn't know was that just after they left, several women with numb, vacant expressions emerged unsteadily from a corner of the store, carrying iron rods. They began to swing the rods, striking the Ability User's body and groin again and again. The scene was gruesome.
Chi Junluo scoffed and withdrew her mental power, paying no more mind to the events at the gas station. After soothing Yi Shuhan to sleep, she continued to drive through the night.
They spent another three days on the road. Occasionally, they would stop to kill a few zombies, hold hands, and collect crystal cores from their heads. Life, it could be said, was quite pleasant.
On the evening of the fifth day, they finally reached B City.
The outskirts of B City were teeming with zombies, but the city center was remarkably clean. As a key city in Country C, its administrative capital, and the place with the highest concentration of military forces, B City had become a massive base. It controlled vast amounts of weapons and troops. Soon after the outbreak, the military had cleared the inner city of zombies and rapidly constructed defensive fortifications.
The strength of the B City Base attracted countless survivors, who risked long and perilous journeys to reach it. To enter the base was to secure one's life.
Thus, when Chi Junluo and Yi Shuhan arrived outside the B City Base, a long line had already formed.
The line was a mix of vehicles and people on foot, its bustling atmosphere comparable to a trendy milk tea shop before the apocalypse.
After waiting for the better part of the day, it was finally their turn.
To enter the base, newcomers had to spend three hours under observation in an isolation room, as the zombie transformation process took exactly that long.
Ability Users were exempt from quarantine and could enter directly. To Yi Shuhan's surprise, however, Chi Junluo didn't reveal her status and instead accompanied her to the isolation room.
