Against the Light - Chapter 104
Chapter 104: I'm Super Well-Behaved
"…" Gu Xinran was dumbfounded. The first thing she did was immediately call Yilan, but the phone was off.
Could it be that she hadn't gotten off the plane yet?
Jin Shuang was about to die laughing. These two, both wanting to surprise the other, had done such a good job keeping it a secret that they ended up with a huge mix-up. Who could you even blame for this?
The person in question was now gloomy, very gloomy.
Gu Xinran sat on a chair to rest for a moment. She looked down at the yellow sand on her pant legs and felt her whole mood sour.
After all the trouble of rushing here, she hadn't seen the person she came for and had suffered quite a bit. It was just awful.
"Why don't you go rest in Sister Lan's tent for a bit?" Jin Shuang clutched her stomach, which ached from laughing. The moment she saw Gu Xinran's expression, she couldn't hold it in.
Gu Xinran glanced at her and nodded reluctantly.
Jin Shuang led her out. The people in the other tents had long been drawn out by Jin Shuang's overwhelming laughter and had all come out to see what the commotion was about.
When they saw Gu Xinran, the group instantly and tacitly understood what had happened, which led to a new round of teasing.
"Eh? President Gu? Here to visit the set? Hey? Strange, where's Sister Lan~~"
"Hahahaha, you're so mean!"
"Hey, don't be like that. President Gu is already feeling wronged enough. Let her go to Sister Lan's tent to look at her things and miss her~"
"Hahahaha—"
"…" Gu Xinran followed Jin Shuang, annoyed.
The crowd watched the two of them, whispering amongst themselves.
"But seriously, are these two telepathic? Isn't this too much of a coincidence? It's a little romantic~ I'm so jealous of Sister Lan."
"Me too. I remember Xinran should still be in the middle of filming a show, right? To take the time to come all this way to see her wife, it's so sweet."
"Sigh, but isn't Sister Lan the same? She has a day off tomorrow, but she couldn't wait to go home today to be with her wife."
"Ah, I'm dying of envy. Such a sweet romance, I want one too, boohoo."
"Wake up."
Gu Xinran followed Jin Shuang into the tent.
The space wasn't large, but it was very clean, and all the items were arranged in an orderly fashion.
Clothes were hanging on a line to dry, and a photo of the two of them was placed by the head of the bed.
Gu Xinran walked to the bedside, picked up the photo, and gently caressed it, a smile gracing her features.
Seeing this small gesture, Jin Shuang couldn't help but praise her inwardly. To smile so gently just from looking at a photo—if that wasn't love to the bone, what was?
"Hey, Sister Ran, have you eaten?"
"Hm? No, I didn't have time." Gu Xinran sighed and put the photo down.
She had even specially brought a cake that Yilan liked, wanting to eat it with her here.
"Conditions are limited here, we only have boxed meals. Want one?"
"No thanks, I'm on a diet anyway. You should go get some rest."
"Oh? What's this? Are you going on a hunger strike because you couldn't see her?"
"No, I've gained a little weight recently, so I need to control it."
"Oh~ Happy weight gain?"
Gu Xinran gave a helpless smile.
"Alright then, you rest up. I won't disturb you."
With that, Jin Shuang left.
Gu Xinran rested her feet, changed out of her dirty clothes, and then called Yilan again. The phone was still off, and she couldn't help but worry a little.
Gu Xinran went outside the tent, intending to find the others and ask about Yilan's recent situation. The moment she stepped out, she froze.
She looked up at the night sky, which was filled with countless stars, exceptionally bright, like a river of stars that seemed almost within reach.
She fell in love with this place at first sight, and her previously gloomy mood eased considerably.
"The stars here are especially bright. Sister Lan also likes to sit outside and watch them for a while every night." A few crew members who were resting leisurely saw her, greeted her, and invited her to sit with them.
Gu Xinran was more than happy to, and she walked over to sit with the others around the bonfire.
Gu Xinran warmed herself by the fire. It was actually a bit cold at night.
"Sigh, if only Sister Lan were here, we could get our fill of their sweet moments." A crew member sighed.
Gu Xinran gave a helpless smile.
"Sister Ran, look up at the sky. Sometimes you can see shooting stars!"
"Oh?" Gu Xinran was genuinely curious. She lay back on the soft sand and stared at the starry sky with wide eyes.
Her thoughts unconsciously drifted to Yilan. Would she also lie on the sand like this, waiting to see a shooting star?
Just as Gu Xinran was thinking this, a bright shooting star suddenly streaked across the night sky, leaving a long tail behind it before gradually disappearing over the horizon!
Gu Xinran was startled. It was her first time ever seeing a shooting star. Although it was fleeting, she was deeply struck by it and couldn't help but feel a little excited.
"Ahhhh! It's really a shooting star! Sister Ran, did you see it!!"
"Make a wish, make a wish, quick, make a wish!!"
The few of them quickly clasped their hands together, closed their eyes, and made a wish.
Gu Xinran looked at them, then back at the sky.
"Sister Ran, you should make a wish too! It's not every day you see a shooting star!"
"Hmm…" Gu Xinran thought for a moment.
"Then, I wish the shooting star would bring Yilan to my side," Gu Xinran said with a smile.
The others laughed along, but in the next second, their smiles froze on their faces.
Gu Xinran didn't notice, still resting her head on her arms and looking at the night sky.
"It seems someone is thinking of me~"
"!?"
Gu Xinran started, tilting her head up. Yilan was squatting behind her, resting her chin on her hands and smiling down at her!
Her ink-black hair fell before Gu Xinran's eyes, unintentionally brushing against her eyelashes. Gu Xinran closed her eyes for a moment, and when she opened them again, her gaze fixed on the faint dimples at the corners of Yilan's lips.
"Holy crap! For real?! This shooting star is too magical! Ahhhh! Oh, shooting star, shooting star, please let me win the lottery!!"
"I wish for my parents to be healthy and for me to save enough money to buy a house soon!"
"I want to get out of being single, ahhh, I want a girlfriend!!"
The group immediately started wishing to the sky.
Gu and Bai watched the group with smiles on their faces.
"How are you… Didn't you go home?"
"The flight was canceled at the last minute." Bai Yilan chuckled. She had been quite upset when the flight was suddenly canceled, but she never expected to come back and see Xinran lying by the fire, watching the stars. She had imagined this scene many times before and almost thought she was dreaming.
"Oh my god, oh my god, oh my god, what kind of wonderful fate is this!!"
"Even the flight got canceled? This is too much of a coincidence!"
"This must be the heavens not being able to bear seeing you two separated!!"
Gu Xinran didn't know whether to laugh or cry. These people were certainly creative with their interpretations… But you had to admit, their interpretation did make it sound rather romantic!
"Eh eh eh?? Sister Lan?" Jin Shuang heard the voices outside, ran out to take a look, and couldn't help but rub her eyes.
"Yes."
"Tsk, the fate between you two is incredible. Even the heavens are helping you!"
The two looked at each other and smiled, carefully sizing each other up.
Gu Xinran caressed Yilan's cheek, her brows furrowing. Her complexion wasn't very good.
"How did you get thinner again? Are you still working yourself to the bone every day?"
"No, my workload isn't heavy. I just give pointers from the side. Jin Shuang is the one mainly leading the team," Bai Yilan said.
"Then how…"
"Sigh, Sister Ran, you have no idea. When Sister Lan first arrived, she couldn't acclimate. She had vomiting and diarrhea. It was a terrible ordeal."
"Couldn't acclimate? Why didn't you tell me?" Gu Xinran frowned.
"It was just for the first few days when I arrived. I'm fine now. It wasn't a big deal, and I didn't want you to worry," Bai Yilan explained.
"Right, it was just the first few days. She's fine now. But the morning before last…"
"Ahem." Bai Yilan coughed lightly and shot the crew member a look.
"What happened the morning before last?"
"Er, the morning… it was nothing, anyway, she's all better now, right~"
"Speak." Gu Xinran's expression darkened.
"She… ate two pieces of iced watermelon and had diarrhea all day."
"…"
Bai Yilan facepalmed, sneaking a peek at Xinran's expression.
"Oh, is there more?" Gu Xinran's expression softened considerably, the corners of her lips turning up slightly as she continued to press.
Bai Yilan's heart skipped a beat. She had a bad feeling and quickly signaled the others with her eyes.
The crew members looked a bit lost, but based on years of tacit understanding, they understood Bai Yilan's meaning.
"Er, no, nothing else. Sister Lan is still very well-behaved."
"…?" Hearing the young camerawoman use the word "well-behaved" to describe Bai Yilan, the other two turned to look at her in unison. It wasn't that she wasn't well-behaved, but something about it felt off.
In their perception, the dynamic between the two had always been Xinran acting like a child who never grew up in front of Sister Lan, receiving all sorts of care and concern from her. The word "well-behaved" was used more often for her. To suddenly use it for Yilan felt strange. And what was even stranger was that Sister Lan actually looked a bit… guilty???
"Oh?" Gu Xinran raised an eyebrow slightly and turned to look at Yilan. "Well-behaved? I'm not so sure about that."
Bai Yilan lowered her head and coughed lightly. "Yes, I'm super well-behaved," she replied in a very small voice.
"Hey? Sister Lan, why aren't you resting? You didn't sleep at all last night, can you still hold up today?"
"???"
Bai Yilan was dumbfounded. She looked up and saw Jin Shuang, who had specifically gone back to put on a face mask, now running out again to urge everyone to rest, selling her out with a single sentence in the process.
"Didn't sleep all night!?" Gu Xinran exploded.
"Ah, yesterday she was rehearsing lines with the actors and also made some last-minute changes to the script. She hasn't rested properly since she got here, always worrying about this and that. That's why I said we should give everyone a day off tomorrow to rest."
After Jin Shuang finished speaking, she looked down and saw the three crew members in front of her all shaking their heads and waving their hands at her.
"What's up?"
"…Bai Yilan! Didn't you say your workload wasn't heavy! Didn't you say you were just giving pointers from the side! Didn't you say Jin Shuang was mainly leading the team?" As Gu Xinran spoke, she watched Bai Yilan get up and bolt, and immediately got up to chase after her.
"You! Stop right there!"
Hearing that, Bai Yilan ran even faster.
"What's wrong?" The instigator, Jin Shuang, looked completely bewildered. What were those two doing?
"So Xinran can be so assertive… then wouldn't that make Sister Lan…"
"…I have a feeling that what I'm imagining is about to happen!"
