VBNWDW - Chapter 97
Chapter 97
When she woke again, it was the morning of the next day.
The Black Dragon lay on her bed of gold coins, listening as Metis finished recounting the remaining events, including the confession of the God of Light after he had been beaten into submission.
The Dragon Clan hadn't excluded her; in fact, they had intentionally let her stand by and listen to the entire story. As the Black Dragon's partner, the dragon cub's mother, and a descendant of the First Queen, she was treated with the same respect as any other dragon.
The matter was complicated, tracing all the way back to the First Queen and her partner. The God of Light's resentment also began at that time.
Remember the gossip the dragon once shared with Metis?
Back then, the Dragon God went to the God of Light for holy water, only to accidentally walk in on him rolling around with his Holy Son, his little disciple.
The incident caused a huge scandal at the time. Even now, some gods occasionally bring it up to mock the God of Light, laughing that he wouldn't even spare his own great-great-great-great-great-grandson.
If the gods were like this, it was even worse for the dragons, who had never held the gods in high regard. They etched the story directly into their ancestral memories, as if afraid they might one day forget.
How could a main god, always so proud and arrogant, who saw himself as superior, endure such ridicule? But the one who caught him was the Dragon God. What could he do?
He could only swallow his anger and force himself into seclusion for twenty thousand years, refusing to emerge until the matter was no longer frequently mentioned.
During this period, he cursed the Dragon God, the First Queen, and her partner countless times.
If that dragon hadn't wanted to enhance the First Queen's power and asked the Dragon God for help, he would never have been caught!
But no matter how humiliating it was, he was partly to blame, so the God of Light could only grit his teeth and bear it.
But not only did the First Queen feel no guilt over the matter, she even had a statue of herself erected in his kingdom of faith!
Even if the people built it for her voluntarily, what god could tolerate their own statue sharing a city with another's, watching their own faith diminish before their eyes?
The God of Light grew dissatisfied, but wary of the Dragon Clan, he could only console himself that losing a little faith was nothing. He still had thousands upon thousands of temples. Thus, he deliberately paid less attention to the Roy Kingdom, reducing his blessings and the like.
Yet even as he repeatedly backed down, that detestable dragon came knocking, saying she wanted to see if his godhood could be split in half for the First Queen.
Arrogant and vile—the most fitting words to describe a dragon.
The dragon first sought out the God of Fire, who shared the same element as her partner. After confirming that the rules he commanded could not be controlled by the First Queen, she then approached the God of Light and other main gods, followed by the lesser gods. Only after trying them all and failing did she reluctantly give up on the gods.
At that time, everyone believed that if it were said that one could master the rules by killing a god, that dragon would have picked up the butcher's knife without hesitation.
Fortunately, she failed…
Every time the God of Light thought of this, he felt a stifling anger weighing on his heart. It didn't dissipate with time; instead, it intensified, burning through his entire being, to the point that he redirected his rage toward the Roy Kingdom.
The gradual weakening of the Roy Kingdom in its later years and the royal family falling under control were partly related to him. He didn't need to act personally; a small hint was enough.
So what if it was protected by a dragon? In the end, only a puppet princess remained.
But just as the God of Light was beginning to let the matter go, Metis and the Black Dragon appeared.
As if history were repeating itself, the Queen of the Roy Kingdom and a dragon appeared before him once more, shattering his projection and destroying his temple…
The God of Light was furious enough to go mad, but wary of the Dragon Clan, he could only place a moderately powerful seal on the dragon. He fumed in his divine hall, sensing every one of his Temples of Light in the Roy Kingdom being dismantled.
Until…
He heard the news of the Queen's pregnancy.
"You're saying he wanted to replace Poached Egg!" The Black Dragon was so shocked she nearly shot to her feet.
The Queen nodded beside her, her expression equally complicated.
Who would have thought that a dignified main god would come up with such a plan?
He thought that the current Black Dragon was even more arrogant and vile than the previous one and had no idea what further torments she might inflict upon the gods in the future. If he could become that cub…
Without Metis or Yueqing noticing, he concealed his identity and came to the city of Anthelia several times.
After confirming that the human and dragon did not intend to inform the Dragon Clan for the time being, and that the child in the womb had a faint aura, making its soul easy to erase, he began to plot.
The reason he didn't act as soon as the dragon egg was laid was because the young dragon was too fragile at that time. Not only had it not rested properly, but it had also tried to break out of its shell, which only made it weaker.
The God of Light pondered for a long time but still didn't dare to make a move. An opportunity like this wouldn't come again in a million years. If he acted rashly, the newly formed, weak dragon body might not be able to withstand his soul.
So, he could only have his subordinates do their best to delay the dragon, while having the white-robed men and the army lie in ambush outside the city. When the time was right, the army would attack the city to create chaos, the white-robed men would steal the egg, and he would erase the soul and enter the body. By the time the dragon came looking, he would have already merged with the dragon's body. From there, all he had to do was follow the plan and smoothly integrate into the Dragon Clan by following the Black Dragon.
But he never expected things to be exposed so quickly, and the plan spiraled out of control. What followed were the events that had just transpired.
After hearing all this, the Black Dragon blinked, her feelings complicated.
A main god who holds the rules of the world, standing at the apex of the plane, actually wanted to be my dragon cub?
She turned to Metis, her tone conflicted. "I really can't imagine that guy calling us 'Mother' in a childish voice."
The Black Dragon was quite shaken. How could Her Majesty the Queen be any better?
The God of Light, whom she had been forced to believe in, kneel to, and constantly told to respect since childhood, was actually so desperate to be her child.
She twitched the corner of her mouth, her expression just as complicated.
"Right, Poached Egg should be a girl, right? Doesn't that mean he would have…" The Black Dragon sucked in a cold breath, once again shocked by the God of Light's sacrifice.
On the Chryse Continent, while same-sex couples could reproduce through special methods, they could only have offspring of the same gender. This was why the Black Dragon and the Queen had named their child Wodaixina, never even considering the possibility of it being male.
Her Majesty the Queen nodded emphatically.
The human and the dragon suddenly fell into a strange state of relief.
After a while, the Black Dragon came back to her senses and asked, "Where is that guy?"
"Probably still outside getting kicked around." Metis wasn't entirely sure either.
"And Poached Egg?"
"With the Patriarch. It wants you to go find it after you wake up."
"Mo Wen and the Purple Cloud Eagle?"
"In a nearby cave. They woke up two days ago."
The Dragon Clan was grateful to the human and the eagle for protecting the dragon cub with their bodies, so they had been taking good care of them these past few days, even setting aside a cave for them, strewn with gold coins.
When the little knight and the bald eagle took a step, all they heard was the clinking of gold coins.
However, the stingy dragons made it clear that the gold coins were to be returned and could not be taken. They could make other requests, such as helping the bald eagle regrow its feathers. As long as it was within the Dragon Clan's ability to fulfill, they could ask for anything.
After finishing her questions, the Black Dragon's face fell.
Her original plan had been to wait until Poached Egg hatched and Her Majesty the Queen had some free time, then bring her wife and child back to Dragon Island.
By then, the dragon cub would be older and wouldn't need as much protection from the Dragon Clan. Even if the Patriarch was angry, there would be nothing he could do. She could then throw a tantrum with her cub, and they could all return to the Roy Kingdom without a worry.
But she never expected something like this to happen.
The moment the Black Dragon imagined the Patriarch giving her a sinister smile, she couldn't help but shudder. Then, she rolled over, exposing her belly with all four feet in the air, and wailed, "I don't want to go."
"I'm the most pitiful dragon in the world!"
She craned her neck and let out a couple of howls, feeling incredibly wronged.
How could she have ever imagined that a god would want to acknowledge her as its mother?
The script the System gave her was a story about a dragon and a villain conquering the world and then destroying it. Now, things had escalated to the God of Light becoming the villain, wanting to acknowledge the original villain and the dragon as his mothers?
This was not a story a dragon could have come up with.
The Black Dragon rolled over, curling her entire body up to envelop Her Majesty the Queen in her embrace, and murmured gloomily, "Metis, let's sneak away."
Metis hadn't rested much these past few days. Her golden hair was strewn about casually, her noble face was full of weariness, and the corners of her eyes were still misty. She gave a helpless smile. "You're abandoning Wodaixina?"
"Don't want her anymore," the Black Dragon said shamelessly. Her gilded eyes were soft, reflecting Metis's figure. "The Patriarch and the others will take good care of her anyway. Have you heard the story of the little tadpoles looking for their mother?"
The Black Dragon swished her tail, her voice firm and full of confidence. "Our Poached Egg can definitely do it too. She's a dragon who's already seen the world before even hatching."
Her Majesty the Queen was so exasperated she laughed. "And what if she doesn't come looking for you?"
"Then we'll just pretend we never had this child," the dragon said, clenching her claw, her voice firm.
Metis didn't know whether to laugh or cry. In the end, she could only give her a little push and say softly, "Go on, now. The Patriarch seems to have something to discuss with you, about Wodaixina."
It was a testament to Metis that she could still remember the dragon egg's name when the dragon kept calling it "Poached Egg."
The Black Dragon let out a pitiful howl, burying her enormous head in Metis's embrace and making whimpering noises.
The scene was a bit strange. The heavily injured dragon was temporarily unable to shrink, so she remained in her hundred-meter-long form. And while Metis was tall, she was still only human.
It was like a wicked dragon acting spoiled and shameless with her little snack.
The little snack could only pat the dragon's large head and coax her gently, "I've already asked Uncle Thorn to put in a good word for you. So many days have passed; however angry the Patriarch and the others were, it should have mostly faded by now."
The dragon made a series of jumbled noises, whimpering and grumbling for a while before finally resolving to get up.
Running away was just a random thought. Never mind that she was still injured; with so many dragons lying around on Dragon Island, she'd be grabbed by the scruff of her neck and tossed back the moment she took a single step out.
She clenched her back teeth, fiercely deciding that before she went to see the Patriarch, she would first "pass by" where the God of Light was.
She raised a claw and patted Metis's head, instructing her in a solemn tone, "Wait for my return. "
Then, with a feeling of grim determination, she stepped out of the cave.
Not long after, a surprised roar erupted from the Patriarch's cave: "You shameless old thing! What are you asking about our wife-and-wife life for!"
"Have you been living alone for too long? Are you lonely?! I can find a wife for you, how about that?!"
Even louder than the Black Dragon's voice was the Patriarch's, tinged with fury amidst his breakdown: "Shut your mouth!"
The entire Dragon Island suddenly fell into a strange, dead silence.
The dragon egg, wrapped in soft fur, trembled for a moment from the shock.
The Golden Dragon clamped his hand firmly over the Black Dragon's mouth, terrified she would utter another word.
