VBNWDW - Chapter 96
Chapter 96
An inexplicable, deathly silence fell over the area. The giant dragon, as resplendent as solid gold, floated in mid-air. Compared to the newly adult black dragon, its body was far more massive and imposing, at least half again as long.
With one claw, it seized the dragon egg, and with the other, it grabbed the God of Light. It yanked him outward with immense force, then slammed him downward, smashing him straight toward the ground. With a sweep of its claw, it sent tremors through the surrounding elements.
The God of Light plummeted, but he never hit the ground. Looking down, one would see that the light elements beneath him had automatically condensed to form a soft cushion.
The Dragon God showed no surprise and dove straight down. Its speed was incredible, the thick scales on its body scraping against the air to create sparks of fire before it crashed heavily onto the God of Light.
The cushion of light elements instantly dissipated. The dragon and the god smashed into the ground together, carving out an enormous crater.
Dust and smoke billowed up, and before it could even settle, the God of Light was sent flying by a punch.
The surrounding humans, forced to their knees by the irresistible pressure, could only strain to look up.
If an ordinary person had been slammed with such force, they would have been reduced to a meat paste mixed with the earth. But the God of Light was merely a bit disheveled. Light elements surged toward him as if they had a will of their own, flowing into his body without any incantation to heal his every wound.
An immortal body.
The words suddenly popped into everyone's mind.
High above, the God of Light gritted his teeth and shouted, "Walo, don't take this too far!"
A furious roar came from the crater. "Over the top? I don't give a damn! You're a hundred-thousand-year-old fossil, and you're bullying a newly adult dragon and an unhatched egg!"
The God of Light knew he was in the wrong, which was why he hadn't acted immediately before. With a wave of his hand, light elements flickered for a moment, and a magic staff appeared in his palm.
He bellowed, "It was that black dragon who destroyed my temples first!"
The moment he finished speaking, the golden dragon shot into the sky again, roaring, "So what if she destroyed your temples! It's not like we plucked your pinfeathers!"
The God of Light was so angry he could have coughed up blood, but he had no time to argue. He gripped his staff cautiously and yelled, "Punishment!"
At their level of power, there was no need for cumbersome incantations. The elements moved with their will, obeying their commands as naturally as breathing.
A holy sword dozens of meters long materialized in mid-air and slashed violently down at the dragon.
The Dragon God seemed to abandon its attack, turning sideways to dodge. The God of Light had just breathed a sigh of relief when he was struck by another fierce impact.
It was the other dragons who had been waiting nearby!
Bastards!
The God of Light screamed in his mind. The Dragon Clan was a bunch of utterly shameless bastards!
So what if you were a main god? So what if you had an immortal body? So what if you could command the elements at will?
Once you were targeted by that pack of scoundrels, they would use every method imaginable to wear you down!
You could manipulate magic at will?
The dragons would see whose body was tougher.
You were a god?
The dragons would call for backup and swarm you.
These guys didn't understand the meaning of "fair play," and when a cub was involved, they went completely insane!
Caught off guard, the God of Light was sent flying a hundred meters. Before he could react, he was struck by another dragon charging from the other side. Then, a giant fireball rushed toward him. He instinctively raised his staff to defend himself, only for a volley of golden blades to stab at him from behind.
It wasn't that he was weak—he was a main god, after all. Otherwise, he wouldn't have remained intact after several brutal hits, suffering only minor wounds.
But he still felt a sense of despair.
The world only knew that the Creator God favored the Dragon Clan, but they didn't know the extent of that doting love. They were granted the most formidable bodies, a talent that allowed them to grow stronger just by sleeping, and an incredibly long lifespan.
If gods were servants chosen by the Creator to manage the planes, then dragons were the Creator's own flesh and blood.
How could a servant ever win against the master's child?
A trace of resentment flashed in his eyes.
Why?
A dragon tail whipped around again, striking his body.
His gaze inadvertently swept below, where his followers, who believed in him, were already prostrate on the ground, trembling.
An indescribable sense of humiliation washed over him.
He suddenly screamed, "If you have the guts, then kill me! Otherwise, I'll never rest until one of us is dead!"
Then, another fist fell.
The God of Light let out a pained cry. A small cut appeared on his face, only to be instantly healed by the elements.
The dragons didn't care in the slightest; after all, this was expected. They just continued their savage assault.
Everything that happened today would be recorded in the annals of future history, repeatedly depicted by the people of Anthelia in words and pictures, yet later generations would still find it hard to believe.
After all, even the people of Anthelia from that generation suspected they were having a grand and bizarre dream.
But for now, they just tilted their heads back, straining their eyes to see.
High in the sky, a swarm of dragons took flight, their wings blotting out a huge portion of the sky and casting the city below into shadow, as if night had fallen in an instant.
And the only source of light was the God of Light they once worshipped. Surrounded by a halo of light elements, he was now like a glowing ball, being kicked and punted around by the dragons.
Yes, kicked and punted around.
They watched the god they once believed in resist futilely, being kicked back and forth as the dragons toyed with him.
The feeling was hard to describe. Even though the Roy Kingdom no longer believed in the God of Light, they couldn't watch the being they once knelt to being so easily trifled with without their expressions turning sour.
Their faces were a complex, almost twisted, mask of emotions.
But the dragons couldn't care less about what the humans thought. Since he dared to bully one of their own, he had to pay the price.
A green dragon to the side swiped its claw, and the light around the God of Light flickered for a moment before he was sent flying a hundred meters away. The dragon even grumbled, "Speak! What are you really after! Why did you try to steal our dragon egg!"
A red dragon on the opposite side flapped its wings and flew up, beating its companion to the punch and swiping its claw downward.
The God of Light was sent flying again. Perhaps the long interval gave him a chance to curse back, "It was clearly you dragons who wronged me first!"
The next second, a dragon struck him with its bony wing, cutting him off. It said coldly, "Just a few temples! So what if they were torn down? Why did you have to seal Yueqing!"
They might as well have written "biased" on their faces.
The God of Light grunted. He tried to fight back but was interrupted again. Feathers continuously fell from his back. If the Purple Cloud Eagle were still conscious, who knows if it would be happily gathering them up.
A nearby dragon snorted coldly. "Exactly! An old undying thing that's lived for over a hundred thousand years, picking a fight with a newly adult dragon and even stealing an egg."
An enormous earth dragon suddenly flew upward, then came crashing down like a mountain, slamming into the God of Light and pinning him underneath. Its voice was muffled as it said, "Are you going to talk or not?"
The impact shook the entire plain, making everyone's eyelids twitch. Anything else would have been crushed to dust, yet the God of Light, with half his body still visible, was actually able to open his mouth. His broken arm reset itself once more; he was more tenacious than a cockroach.
But before he could speak, another claw slapped him across the face, forcibly cutting off his unspoken words.
This wasn't an interrogation. This was clearly using interrogation as a pretext to get some brutal revenge first!
Below, the Dragon God's eyes swept over the scene. Although he wanted to figure out why the God of Light would take such a huge risk to steal the egg, he also had to let the dragons vent their anger.
He looked down at the dragon egg in his arms, and his proud eyes instantly softened. Beside him were the unconscious black dragon and Metis, who had rushed over.
Though he didn't know what had happened yet, seeing the egg's aura connected to the dragon and the human, he could guess a few things. So he didn't stop them. Instead, he shielded them with his bony wing, in case one of the foolish dragons wasn't paying attention and kicked them over here.
The heavily injured Purple Cloud Eagle and Mo Wen were also carried over.
Although dragons had terrible personalities, they understood how to repay kindness. This human and this eagle were injured so badly protecting a dragon cub, so the Dragon God naturally had to heal them. However, now wasn't a good time for treatment, so he first summoned a healing spell to temporarily stabilize their lives.
After a moment, he raised his claw to touch the dragon egg again, then looked up and shouted, "Stop playing around. Let him tell us the reason first!"
Only then did the dragons reluctantly stop. Looking at the God of Light now, even the light elements couldn't coalesce around him. His feathers were tattered and sparse, and he looked utterly miserable.
"Speak!" a dragon roared, its eyes still filled with lingering fury.
Yueqing was a cub they had watched grow up. How long had she been away to be bullied like this? The protective dragons' scales were about to stand on end.
But the God of Light just cursed, "If you have the guts, kill me!"
The moment he finished speaking, without needing a command from the Dragon God, the dragons swarmed him.
The Dragon God blinked, then stroked the dragon egg again. The anger that had just flared up easily dissipated.
A new dragon egg… the Dragon God thought gleefully.
He nodded, deciding to let the God of Light suffer a bit more.
As for the black dragon beside him, he tossed another healing spell her way.
Trying to hide a dragon egg, are you?
The dragon snorted, deciding to only help her break the seal and suppress the poison in her body. As for those injuries, a few days of sharp pain would teach her a lesson!
Only a stupid dragon would get beaten up like this. A smart dragon would have called for help before getting sealed!
As he was pondering, the dragons above suddenly seemed to agree on something. They dragged the God of Light and flew off into the distance.
The Dragon God frowned. Just as he was about to ask where they were going, a dragon shouted an explanation: they were going to take the God of Light to every one of his temples and beat him up in front of his followers.
The Dragon God: "…"
The Dragon God helpfully called out, "Remember to tear down his temples, too."
Gods were indeed unkillable, but that didn't mean they couldn't be weakened.
To use an analogy, faith was equivalent to a god's performance. The gods helped the Creator manage the planes, and the Creator distributed divine power based on the amount of faith each god received.
Thus, in a forgotten chapter of history, gods were not always high and mighty. They used various methods to compete for faith, dividing all the races of the Chryse Continent among themselves. It wasn't until a million years ago that the results were finalized, creating the distinction between main gods and minor gods.
The Dragon Clan, with its inherited memories, was naturally aware of this history, which was why, unlike other races, they had never held gods in reverence.
Even the Dragon God himself thoroughly despised his own divine position.
He just became the patriarch, so how did a divine position suddenly fall on him? If it weren't for the fact that he could sense the auras of all dragons through this godhood, he would have long ago run to the Creator to cry about it, let alone fight for any power of faith.
But dragons didn't need faith. Gods did!
If his temples were completely destroyed and no one knelt to him anymore, he would sooner or later become so weak that he'd be worse off than a minor god.
The God of Light began to struggle frantically, a look of fear finally appearing on his face. But he was kicked far away by a dragon, sent flying like a soccer ball, shedding yet more feathers.
When the black dragon awoke, several days had already passed.
She stared blankly for a while before belatedly realizing that this was her cave on Dragon Island.
She turned her head and saw that the gold coins and gems that had decorated the walls had long been pried off.
This bunch, who loved gems as much as their own lives, how could they bear to watch shiny treasures be buried in dust in an empty cave? So, they had resolutely extended their helping claws, pocketed these little darlings, and then dug three feet deep into the cave to check thoroughly.
Dragons were just that considerate to their companions—good at protecting their kin, and good at robbing them blind.
The black dragon's lips twitched. The thought of the gems she hadn't had time to take with her made her heart ache, a pain worse than her physical wounds.
She lifted a claw, trying to get up, but found that the pain hadn't subsided. She blinked in confusion. Hadn't a single dragon healed her?
The dragon was shocked. The dragon was furious. The dragon missed her gold coins that she hadn't had time to pack up even more.
If she had known, she wouldn't have left them any!
Despicable dragons!
The angry dragon grunted as the movement pulled at her wounds. Thankfully, the seal in her body had been removed, and the poison had been specially suppressed for her. Otherwise, she might have died of anger right here.
What about the dragon egg?
She was a newly adult cub too, okay!
How could they forget about a dragon once they had a dragon egg!
Yueqing snorted indignantly. But when her gaze fell to her side, a pang of guilt couldn't help but surface.
Despite all her precautions, Metis had still followed her to Dragon Island and was staying by her side.
She lifted her dragon claw, her fingertip brushing across Metis's weary face. She must not have slept well these past few days; there were dark circles under her eyes.
The dragon had so many questions, but she chose to lower her head again, resting it on her claws and spreading her wings to cover Metis.
Just let Poached Egg drift around outside for a while. It's not like those old guys will let anything happen to it.
The black dragon, one of the mothers, thought this without a shred of guilt.
Her eyelids drooped, and she let herself fall into a light sleep.
Not far from the cave, the pack of dragons was gathered together as if they had found a fun new game. They slapped with their claws, kicked with their feet, and whipped with their tails, treating the now-featherless God of Light like a soccer ball.
The God of Light's recovery speed had visibly slowed. His repeated curses were cut off, and he could only let out unwilling howls.
"Let's fight one-on-one if you have the guts!"
Before he could finish, a dragon dove down and smashed him into the ground, and the next second, another dragon took over.
They heard him, but they disagreed.
Dragons were just that shameless.
Meanwhile, in the Dragon God's cave, several of the oldest dragons were gathered around a black and white dragon egg, frowning as if discussing something.
They argued at times, doubted themselves at others, and couldn't reach a conclusion for a long time.
They could only stare wide-eyed at this dragon egg, which was completely different from any they had seen before.
None of this concerned the black dragon. Her wings tightened unconsciously, pulling Metis closer into her embrace.
Outside the cave, the sun rose and set. Dusk swept over again, and another day passed.
The black and white dragon egg suddenly swayed, settling into the nest made of soft fur.
In the distance, the God of Light's wails abruptly ceased as he was accidentally knocked into the sea by a dragon, swallowing several mouthfuls of water.
