PSW - Chapter 100
Chapter 100
"That's not necessary," Zheng Yi said softly.
Humanity's Light Shelter and the Zhongshan base were completely different in nature.
The people in Zhongshan just wanted to survive and help more people survive. But Humanity's Light… they clearly had greater ambitions and more complex ideas.
Besides, the zombie horde hadn't even breached the gates of Humanity's Light yet; the situation wasn't that dire.
Even if she revealed herself and preached, she wouldn't gain much. Not unless she resorted to force, and Zheng Yi really had no interest in that.
Yu Yinan simply turned to look at Zheng Yi. Zheng Yi didn't explain why it wasn't necessary, and Yu Yinan didn't press for a reason. She quickly put the question out of her mind, thought for a moment, and then asked in a low voice, "Chu Yi, Zhu Lanyuan, and Lian Langxi… they all know about you now."
Zheng Yi hummed in acknowledgment. Zhu Lanyuan… had given her Saint Points. But while Lian Langxi and Chu Yi hadn't accepted her from the bottom of their hearts, she hadn't received any character-breaking warnings either. Their attitudes must be somewhere in the middle.
"Why was that special zombie so afraid of you, trying to run the moment it saw you? And Chu Yi… Chu Yi seemed…" It seemed she was also a little afraid of Zheng Yi.
Yu Yinan looked at Zheng Yi. Her dark eyes were half-closed, casting a faint shadow that hid the emotion within. Yu Yinan's gaze shifted downward, and she couldn't resist raising a hand to gently caress Zheng Yi's cheek.
Why… would anyone be afraid of Zheng Yi? Yu Yinan carefully studied Zheng Yi's features. Other than a quickening heartbeat, she felt no emotion related to fear.
"Chu Yi is a mental-type ability user, and that special zombie's evolution was also focused on its brain, on the mental side," Zheng Yi said softly, her eyes still slightly closed and her breathing steady, as if she were discussing something trivial. "Their perception is much sharper. They can sense dangers that ordinary people can't."
"But, why would there be danger…" Yu Yinan's fingertips gently stroked the skin of Zheng Yi's cheek. The smoothness beneath her touch was enchanting. Her fingers brushed past the corner of Zheng Yi's mouth, then lightly traced the bridge of her nose. "Zheng Yi, have you really become… that powerful?"
How could she have overlooked it? Zheng Yi was just that powerful, far beyond any ordinary ability user. Yu Yinan thought of the mental-type ability user in Zhongshan who had died a violent death, and the one in the fishing village who had died instantly just for trying to probe Zheng Yi… Mental-type ability users were supposed to be the most inscrutable of all. The mind was formless, shapeless, and omnipresent. Yet when they encountered Zheng Yi, the moment they tried to probe her, control her, or hypnotize her… whatever their purpose, as soon as they used their ability on her, it seemed they all… died a violent death.
Eyeballs bursting, bleeding from every orifice.
Was Zheng Yi on the verge of transcending humanity?
As Yu Yinan thought this, she also felt that an insurmountable chasm already separated ordinary people from ability users. In a way, ability users and ordinary people were no longer the "same kind."
And Zheng Yi was perhaps simply the most supreme among all ability users.
"Jiejie, there is no upper limit to power," Zheng Yi said with a light laugh. "And I am merely in constant pursuit of the infinite, drawing ever closer to it." She raised her hand, grabbing Yu Yinan's and pulling it down.
"Is that so… In that case, I'll just be in constant pursuit of you, drawing ever closer to you." Yu Yinan wasn't flustered when her wrist was caught. She even smiled and snuggled closer to Zheng Yi. She rolled on top, propping herself up over Zheng Yi, then leaned down to gently kiss her forehead and tidy her stray hairs.
Zheng Yi released her wrist and didn't resist the intimate gesture. But when Yu Yinan leaned down to kiss her again, she wrapped her arms around Yu Yinan's neck. As the kiss ended and Yu Yinan pushed herself up to move away, Zheng Yi suddenly pulled her back down and bit her neck.
Yu Yinan gasped in pain but didn't struggle. She even obediently lowered herself to make it easier for Zheng Yi. She only controlled herself so as not to put her full weight on Zheng Yi. When Zheng Yi released her and used her ability to heal the bite, she whispered, "Zheng Yi, I love you so much."
"Mm," Zheng Yi responded. She raised a hand to caress Yu Yinan's eyes. The emotion in those eyes was always so pure and fervent. Such pure eyes… if she were to gouge them out, they might make for a fine collector's item. But she wondered if the emotion within them could be preserved for eternity as well.
Just as Yu Yinan had caressed her, Zheng Yi's fingers traced a path down from those eyes, sliding over the bridge of Yu Yinan's nose and tapping her lips before pressing lightly against the bone of her throat.
Yu Yinan swallowed instinctively, a subtle movement that was especially clear beneath Zheng Yi's fingertips.
"About the meteor fragments, you should go talk to Chu Yi," Zheng Yi said softly. "Chu Yi, Zhou Xiyue? Go talk to the shelter's leadership. Can you do that?"
"Of course, I'll handle it." Yu Yinan's eyes lit up. Zheng Yi rarely asked her to do anything, so there was no way she would refuse such a small request. Talking to them was a minor task; the important thing was to get information about the other meteor fragments. By connecting it to the special zombie, she could bring up the topic and ask questions quite naturally.
She just needed to get in touch with Chu Yi.
Yu Yinan thought for a moment. "I'll visit Chu Yi tomorrow."
"Let's stay here until the new year," Zheng Yi said. "Then we'll go to that mutated forest."
The third great rain hadn't ended yet. After it did, the mutated plants would need some time to grow and absorb its effects. After the new year, the timing would be perfect.
"Okay. I'll follow you. I'll listen to whatever you say." When it came to their itinerary, Yu Yinan had no opinions at all. As long as she was with Zheng Yi, that was all that mattered. Zheng Yi's fingers were still resting on her neck. Yu Yinan leaned down slightly, and Zheng Yi lowered her hand. As she wished, Yu Yinan leaned down and kissed Zheng Yi's lips. "...I want a piece of candy."
Zheng Yi chuckled softly. Before Yu Yinan could even react, she felt her vision suddenly flip, and her position with Zheng Yi was completely reversed. Her eyes widened. Zheng Yi's hair fell against her cheek. Yu Yinan felt a daze wash over her. How… how did she do that? Was Zheng Yi that strong? How could she… in an instant…
Forget resisting; she didn't even know how Zheng Yi had done it. She hadn't even had time to process it!
But before Yu Yinan could dwell on it, she was captivated by Zheng Yi's actions. Zheng Yi sat up on top of her, reached out, and took out a piece of candy. With her long, slender fingers, she slowly tore open the wrapper, held the candy lightly between her teeth, and, with a slight turn of her eyes, leaned down to deliver it to her.
Sweet, warm.
Yu Yinan was utterly mesmerized, completely intoxicated by this kiss that was as gentle and sweet as honey.
"Zheng Yi…"
She murmured the name, calling it countless times in her heart.
Zheng Yi still hadn't responded to her confession of love. Perhaps she should be content. She could be this intimate with Zheng Yi now, in a relationship with her. Zheng Yi agreed to and fulfilled almost every request she made. She was Zheng Yi's girlfriend…
She should be content.
Yu Yinan's gaze trembled. Once more, she eagerly lifted her head, wrapped her arms around Zheng Yi's neck, and kissed her. The way Zheng Yi looked at her now was always gentle. She would smile at her, deliberately tease her…
She should be, must be, and perhaps had long been someone special.
"Zheng Yi… just like me… a little bit…" she whispered in a silent murmur, swallowing all the words back down, hiding them in the depths of her heart. She only channeled her fervent, pure emotions into a deep kiss, into the rising temperature and the fire burning in her heart as she held Zheng Yi tightly.
I really… love her so much.
I wish, I wish I could get even closer, just a little closer to Zheng Yi.
After a day of rest, Chu Yi's complexion had improved considerably. When Yu Yinan came to visit, her expression was momentarily unnatural upon seeing her, but she quickly relaxed and welcomed her into the room with a smile.
Chu Yi was alone in the room, leaning back on a soft sofa, half-sunk into its cushions. "Don't be so formal, just sit wherever you like. Is there something you came to see me about?"
"If it's about Zheng Yi, don't worry, I won't tell anyone."
"Um… it's not about Zheng Yi." Yu Yinan sat down at the other end of the sofa. She didn't lean back, instead sitting perfectly upright and serious. "It's about the meteor fragments."
"Meteor fragments?" Chu Yi was taken aback. She pursed her lips. "Is this about what I think it is…"
"Yes." Yu Yinan nodded and briefly explained their encounter with Chi Heqing's squad in Huikong.
"Changping… Dawn Research Institute?" Chu Yi frowned, mulling over the two names. She sat up from the sofa. "Meteor fragments… I'm sorry, I don't have any information on that. But I'll report this. Maybe Yun Lingjian will have some ideas? That special zombie might be related to the fragments."
"If you find anything, can you let us know?"
"...Of course." Chu Yi studied Yu Yinan. At this moment, she didn't seem all that different from before. She hesitated for a moment before asking, "You came to see me just for this?"
"Hm? The meteor fragments should be very important. And no one knows what kind of impact they might have. We don't even know if Chi Heqing's squad found any fragments. Even if they did, with the current level of scientific research, it would be difficult to study them, right?"
"You're right. But I don't know the first thing about meteor fragments or research. I can only help you pass the message along." Seeing that Yu Yinan truly seemed to have come only for this matter, Chu Yi felt a strange mix of emotions. She paused, silent for a moment, before asking again, "That sister of yours… Zheng Yi, is she still your sister?"
"...Zheng Yi, she's a good person," Yu Yinan said in a low voice. "I know she was pretending before, but-but she's really a good person. She…"
"She's not my sister."
Chu Yi scratched her head and pushed her glasses up the bridge of her nose. "I know she's not a bad person. What I mean is-"
"She's my girlfriend now." Yu Yinan looked at her, a sweet and shy smile on her face. "We're in a relationship."
"???" Chu Yi's hand froze halfway through adjusting her glasses. She stared at Yu Yinan, momentarily suspecting that she had overused her mental ability and was now having auditory hallucinations.
"I understand. But no matter what guise she puts on, whether it's real or fake, she is still Zheng Yi. She has never once hurt me and has always been good to me. Zheng Yi is Zheng Yi, and she always will be."
"...As long as you haven't been deceived. But, you… you two are together now?"
