Against the Light - Chapter 147
Chapter 147: Gu Baiye
Early in the morning, Gu Xinran rose, glanced at the calendar on the wall, and then at Yilan, who was sleeping soundly in her arms.
She carefully withdrew her hand, picked up the phone from the bedside table, got up, and went out to the balcony.
She called the assistant director to ask about her filming schedule for the day.
Her scenes were supposed to have wrapped yesterday, which would have marked the start of her short holiday. But because of what happened, she had to take emergency leave from the crew, leaving her scenes unfinished. She had to go back today to complete them.
As Gu Xinran was talking with the director, she glanced back into the bedroom and saw that Yilan was awake, carefully stretching. She waved at her.
After hanging up, she returned to the room, climbed back into bed, and held her sweet little wife for a long, affectionate cuddle.
"Who were you calling just now?" Yilan asked.
"Hm? Mrs. Gu, is the first thing you do after opening your eyes really checking up on me? That's not very proper, is it?"
"Mwah~"
Gu Xinran smiled and kissed her between the eyebrows.
"I'm taking you out today."
"Huh? No, no, that's not necessary. I'm not going anywhere." Yilan had learned her lesson and decisively shook her head in refusal.
Gu Xinran didn't know whether to laugh or cry. She tapped her nose. Wouldn't it have been better if you were this obedient earlier?
"We have to go to the hospital for a follow-up today. We can't skip it," Gu Xinran said with a smile.
Bai Yilan had a moment of realization. She tilted her head, her gaze passing over Gu Xinran to the calendar on the wall. Indeed, today's date was circled.
"Let's get up. We'll go after breakfast."
"Mhm~"
After they had cuddled enough, Gu Xinran got up and went to the living room. She opened the fridge, wondering what kind of nutritious breakfast to make.
Just then, she heard a door open. She turned her head and saw it was Shi Qing's room.
Gu Xinran smiled, about to wish her a good morning, when she suddenly froze.
"Auntie Ye???"
Seeing Ye Nan peeking out, Gu Xinran was dumbfounded. She double-checked—that was definitely Shi Qing's room!
When Ye Nan saw someone in the living room, she had wanted to shut the door and go back inside, but Gu Xinran had already spotted her. Hearing her name called, she poked her head out awkwardly, cleared her throat, and walked out with feigned confidence. "Morning. Why are you up so early today? Not being clingy? You've grown up. Oh, right, what do you want for breakfast? I'll make it for you."
Ye Nan walked to the kitchen and began washing the utensils on the counter with a natural air, but her heart was pounding. She was terrified Gu Xinran would ask why she was coming out of Shi Qing's room so early in the morning, looking disheveled.
Gu Xinran studied her for a moment, then smiled faintly. "Anything is fine. I'll leave it to you, then." With that, she turned and went back to the bedroom.
"Huh?" Ye Nan was stunned for a second. How was she so easy to dismiss?
Gu Xinran returned to the bedroom and shot into the bathroom. Yilan was washing her face and jumped in surprise.
"What's wrong?"
"I just saw!" Gu Xinran swallowed hard.
"Hm???"
"I saw Auntie Ye coming out of Mom's room!!!"
"!?" Bai Yilan froze completely. "What? Say that again??"
"Auntie Ye! In her pajamas, coming out of Mom's room! Her hair was a mess, and when she saw me, she looked flustered and totally unnatural!" Gu Xinran said excitedly, completely unaware that the word "gossip" was written all over her face.
Bai Yilan was so stunned she forgot to rinse the cleanser off her face, just staring blankly at her.
Gu Xinran was amused by her wife's silly expression and helped her wipe her face clean.
"Are you saying the two of them… last night…?"
"I don't know, but I have a feeling something definitely happened. Otherwise, Auntie Ye wouldn't have been so flustered," Gu Xinran said with certainty.
Bai Yilan took a deep breath. "But that shouldn't be right. Mom was so angry yesterday. I thought she'd at least ignore Auntie Ye for a while."
"Hiss… now that you mention it, could it be that Auntie Ye…"
"Gloriously sacrificed herself to quell Mom's anger!?" The two of them exclaimed in unison, their eyes widening as they stared at each other.
"What? Who gloriously sacrificed themselves? What are you two chatting about instead of getting ready?" Ye Nan happened to push the door open and peek inside, having only caught the last part of their sentence.
The two of them froze. Yilan reacted instantly, burying her head to continue washing her face.
"Ah, nothing, no one. We'll be ready in a minute," Gu Xinran replied.
"Yilan, we have to go to the hospital for a check-up later."
"I know, Auntie Ye."
"Hey, Auntie Ye," Gu Xinran called out to her. She hesitated for a moment, then couldn't help but smile slyly. "Did you sleep well last night?"
"…?" Ye Nan was baffled for a second, her face flushing for no reason. She opened her mouth, wanting to say something but stopping herself several times. After a long pause, she managed to squeeze out the words, "It was okay," and then promptly fled.
Gu Xinran burst out laughing.
"You're terrible, deliberately teasing her."
"Didn't you want to ask the same thing?" Gu Xinran asked with a grin.
"Well, I did want to~"
During the meal, Gu Xinran and Bai Yilan couldn't stop stealing glances at Ye Nan, trying hard to suppress their laughter.
Ye Nan kept her head down and focused on eating, not looking at anyone. Usually, she would put food on Shi Qing's plate, but there was no such treatment today.
As for Shi Qing, she seemed completely unfazed. And while she still looked expressionless as she ate, for some reason, it felt like she was smiling. A faint, almost imperceptible smile seemed to grace her face.
"Isn't it time for your check-up today? I'll go with you."
"It's okay, Mom. Auntie Ye and Xinran will go with me. You can focus on your work."
"It's fine. I'm not busy today," Shi Qing said.
Seeing her unusual insistence, Bai Yilan was a little surprised. Her mind immediately went astray, and she couldn't help but exchange a look with Xinran, their eyes communicating volumes.
【Bai: Could it be that Mom can't bear to be apart from Auntie Ye?】
【Gu: Very possible! I'm even more certain something happened between them last night!】
【Bai: Ooh, my ship is sailing! It's real!】
【Gu: Hey, don't be so obvious. It'll be bad if they find out.】
"Ahem." Bai Yilan lowered her head and coughed lightly, then focused on eating obediently.
After breakfast, the group left for the hospital, heading straight for the VIP room they had booked in advance.
In the room, Yilan lay on the bed while the others gathered around her.
The doctor was using an instrument to scan her belly, the image of the fetus displayed on the screen.
"The fetal position is good, and the baby's development is normal."
Gu Xinran stared at the little one on the screen. Although the image was blurry and the face looked distorted, she felt the magic of life and even had the urge to cry.
After leaving the hospital, they got into the car discreetly, managing to avoid attracting any attention from passersby.
In the car, Gu Xinran glanced at her phone.
"Mom, can Yilan come with me to the set?"
"Hm?" Before Shi Qing could respond, Yilan looked up in surprise, her face full of anticipation.
"Yes, I have one last scene today, and it's not much. After I wrap, I won't be taking on any more projects for a while. I plan to stay home with Yilan until after the birth. I'm worried she'll get bored these next few months, so let her come visit the set."
Shi Qing frowned.
"I'll watch her closely. She has a lot of friends on set, too. There won't be any problems."
"I'll be good!!!" Bai Yilan's eyes lit up.
"Then you go with her. I'll wait for you in the car," Shi Qing said, turning to Ye Nan.
"Should I take you home first?"
"No need. It's fine to wait."
With the plan settled, Ye Nan parked the car outside the film set and accompanied Yilan and Xinran inside.
Just as they were about to enter the studio, Gu Xinran suddenly stopped and pulled Yilan back.
"What's wrong?"
"When you see Xia Chenxing, you are not allowed to make that fangirl face!"
"Hmph."
Bai Yilan pouted and huffed. Gu Xinran put an arm around her and started to turn away.
"Hey, hey, fine," she conceded with great reluctance.
"Sister Ran is here! Hey!! Director Bai!!! Aahhh!! Sisters, Director Bai is visiting the set!!"
"Ahhh, it really is Teacher Bai! I saw you on TV yesterday, you were so cool!!!"
"Oh my, your belly is so big now! Quick, quick, get a chair for Teacher Bai!"
Several staff members were Yilan's little fans. The moment they saw her, they rushed over and surrounded her, abandoning their props.
The last time Yilan visited, they were in the middle of filming, and she had gone to the break room afterward, so many of the crew didn't even know she had been there. They only found out when they saw it on Weibo and were kicking themselves. Seeing Yilan in person this time, they were all incredibly excited.
"Thank you all for your support, and thank you for taking care of Xinran during this time," Bai Yilan said, nodding and smiling at everyone.
"Not at all, not at all! It's Sister Ran who takes care of us."
"Exactly! Teacher Bai, please sit. Don't stand, it must be tiring."
"Thank you."
"Hey, hey, hey, what are you all doing? Get back to work!" Director Zhao Sheng came out of the break room and, seeing the crowd, walked over curiously to take a look.
"Have you forgotten about your bread and butter?" Zhao Sheng's eyes widened as she saw the props scattered on the ground, her expression stern.
Hearing her flare up, the crowd scattered like birds.
Just as Bai Yilan was about to stand up and greet her, Zhao Sheng glanced over. "What are you standing up for? Sit down." After saying this gruffly, she turned to scold the staff members.
"???"
Bai Yilan was stunned for a moment, thinking she had misheard.
"That's just how Director Zhao is. She never says what she means," Gu Xinran chuckled.
"What are you doing? Shouldn't you be in makeup?" Just as she finished speaking, Zhao Sheng yelled at her again.
"Coming, coming." Gu Xinran immediately responded, winking at Yilan before heading to the makeup room.
Before long, all departments were ready, and filming began.
Bai Yilan moved closer to Zhao Sheng, looking at the monitor, wanting to learn how she directed.
Zhao Sheng sensed her approach and glanced over. "What? Aren't you Yu Hua's student? Go away, you can't watch. Someone, get her a stool and take her over there to sit." Zhao Sheng waved her hand dismissively, issuing the order bluntly.
"???" Yilan was completely bewildered. The last time she came, Teacher Zhao had been so friendly!
A staff member stifled a laugh and led Yilan to the side, a little farther from Zhao Sheng. They even thoughtfully picked the best viewing angle for her, so she could see Xinran's stunning figure.
"Hey, what's wrong with Director Zhao?"
"Sigh, don't mention it. The other day, Teacher Yu came by for a stroll, saw her directing, and tore her a new one. She made sarcastic comments for a long time, then just up and left. So now, she's in a competitive mood."
"Teacher Yu?"
"Ah, yes."
Bai Yilan didn't know whether to laugh or cry. Fair enough.
"Hey, is Chenxing not here today?"
"Ah, Sister Xing wrapped up yesterday, so she's not here today. Oh, right, I almost forgot, you're a fan of hers, aren't you? What a pity."
"Not a pity at all." Bai Yilan rested her chin in her hand, her eyes full of smiles as she watched Xinran's dashing figure on the set.
"Cut! That's a wrap."
"Woohoo—Sister Ran has wrapped!"
"Congratulations, Sister Ran~ Happy wrap~"
"Thank you, thank you." Gu Xinran accepted the flowers from a staff member. "Thank you all for your care these past few months. If there's a chance, I hope to work with you all again. Thank you, Director Zhao and Director Liu, for your guidance. I've learned so much from you during this time. Thank you."
Gu Xinran bowed to Director Zhao.
Zhao Sheng walked over and gave her a hug. "You're a good actress. Keep it up, stay humble and patient. Your future is bright."
"Thank you."
"Everyone, I won't be able to join you for the wrap party tonight." After saying this, Gu Xinran glanced in Yilan's direction, and the crew members all started laughing knowingly.
"Hey, why are you showing off right before you leave?"
"Exactly, that's too much~"
"Not too much, not too much at all! We can handle even more!!!"
"Haha." Gu Xinran laughed heartily, waved to the crowd, and then went to the makeup room to get cleaned up.
Bai Yilan followed close behind. When the makeup artist saw her, she tactfully gave up her seat, letting her personally help her wife remove her makeup.
The two of them would glance at each other from time to time, filling the room with little pink bubbles.
After saying goodbye to everyone on the crew, Gu Xinran led Yilan and Ye Nan, who had been hiding on the side, back to the car.
"Do you miss life on set?" Gu Xinran asked.
"Mhm." Yilan looked at the bustling film set in the distance, thinking of her own little team.
"Once this little one is out, you'll be free. We'll go back to filming and get the old team back together."
"Okay."
"Hey, hey, what 'okay'? Do you two have any awareness that you're about to be mothers?" Ye Nan glanced at them.
"You've got it all planned out, spending all your time on set. Who's going to take care of the baby? Are you expecting us two old folks to do it?"
"Uh…" The two exchanged a look. Right, they had to raise a child.
Gu Xinran patted Yilan's belly. "How about when we get back, we find some videos on how to mix formula and let her learn to take care of herself?"
"???"
"Listen to that. Is that something a human would say?" Ye Nan rolled her eyes.
Gu Xinran finally got her wish and started her vacation. For the next few days, she was at home, revolving around her wife and child, feeling happier than ever.
She even specifically learned how to make some desserts from Ye Nan, preparing to make them for the little one in the future.
These past few days, the incident with Gu Xinyuan continued to ferment. Ever since she had publicly clashed with the other members of her group, their fans had been relentlessly attacking her. Her Weibo was a warzone, and she was too busy defending herself to cause any more trouble for the time being.
However, Gu Xinran didn't let her guard down. She had Fang Yi and Qu Qi continue to monitor the situation, looking for the right opportunity to crush her completely.
The days passed one by one, and in the blink of an eye, Yilan's due date was approaching. Shi Qing gave the order, and Yilan was sent to the hospital to await labor, which gave everyone peace of mind.
For the next few days, the entire family was on high alert, led by Gu Xinran, who was so excited she couldn't sleep!
At night, while sleeping next to Yilan, she would wake up almost every hour to check on her. The crucial thing was, even in this state, her energy was still excellent, as if she were on a constant adrenaline rush.
That night, not long after they had fallen asleep, Gu Xinran, sleeping in the adjacent bed, suddenly woke with a start, her heart pounding. She glanced at the time—it was almost twelve.
She wiped the sweat from her forehead, got up, and looked at Yilan. She saw that Yilan's face was pale, her forehead covered in beads of sweat. Her brows were tightly furrowed, and one hand was clutching her stomach. Gu Xinran was terrified.
"Yilan? Yilan?" Gu Xinran called to her urgently, reaching a hand under the covers. It was wet. She immediately realized her water had broken! She instantly pressed the emergency button by the bed.
Shi Qing and Ye Nan were the first to arrive. "What's wrong?"
"Her water broke." Gu Xinran's voice was trembling as she spoke. She swallowed nervously, her fingertips icy cold.
Soon, the doctors arrived and immediately began to examine Yilan.
"Her water has broken, but her cervix isn't fully dilated yet. Don't worry, you must remain calm. It's okay. Once she's fully dilated, she can go to the delivery room." The doctor's voice was steady, which helped calm them down.
"Okay, thank you." Gu Xinran responded, and together they carefully moved Yilan to a clean bed nearby.
"It hurts…" Bai Yilan murmured softly.
"It's normal to feel pain now. Don't worry too much. I'll be back to check on you in a little while." The doctor said before leaving.
Shi Qing sat by the bed, holding her daughter's hand, her face etched with worry. She had been through this pain before and knew the agonizing feeling. Seeing Yilan suffering the same torment now made her heart ache as if it were being pierced by needles.
As for Gu Xinran, she was on the verge of crying along with Yilan, constantly wiping the sweat from her brow.
"Yilan, deep breaths. Remember the prenatal class we took? The instructor taught us how to breathe to relieve the pain." Gu Xinran calmed herself, recalling the breathing techniques from the class, and did them along with Yilan.
"Mom, did it hurt this much when you had me?" Bai Yilan looked at Shi Qing with teary eyes.
"You were a difficult one. I was in labor for twelve hours before you were born," Shi Qing said, stroking her hair.
The moment she said that, Ye Nan's expression changed. Good heavens, the poor girl was already in pain. A comment like that would scare her to death if the pain didn't kill her first. Twelve hours of labor, what did that even mean!
Ye Nan couldn't help but secretly poke Shi Qing. "It wasn't that exaggerated. Yilan was very well-behaved. She came out right away, without much suffering."
"Really?" Bai Yilan looked at Ye Nan, then suddenly frowned.
"Were you with my mom back then?"
"Uh…" Ye Nan's face stiffened, her lie exposed in an instant. She gave an awkward smile.
"Don't think about that right now. Isn't this little one usually very good? Talk to her, coax her, make a deal with her to come out a little sooner." Ye Nan smiled and rubbed Yilan's belly, trying her best to lighten the mood.
"If she could understand words, why would she have made me suffer for so long back then? I prayed to every god and ancestor, but she wouldn't come out," Shi Qing retorted, glancing at her.
"??? Ahem! No one will think you're mute if you just keep quiet!" Ye Nan glared at her, snapping back fiercely.
The moment she said it, she froze. She suddenly realized the atmosphere in the room had become strangely awkward. She turned to see Yilan and Xinran staring at her, mouths agape. Yilan had even forgotten to cry out in pain.
Only then did she realize her tone just now might have been a little inappropriate. She immediately put on a broad smile. "Sister Qing, that's not what I meant…"
"Oh," Shi Qing replied faintly.
Ye Nan looked embarrassed. She chuckled, tugged on Shi Qing's sleeve, and gestured for her to come outside.
"Boss, you can't talk about those things. Yilan will get scared. We need to comfort her right now, make her less afraid!"
Shi Qing was silent for a moment.
The two returned to the room. "Yilan, your mom has something she wants to say to you~" Ye Nan pulled Shi Qing over, shooting her meaningful looks.
Shi Qing's expression shifted several times before she rolled her eyes at Ye Nan. "Your Auntie Ye is right. You crawled out of my belly in a flash back then. It was effortless, and I didn't suffer much. Your grandma said it was the same when she had me, so it's a family tradition. Don't be afraid. This little one will crawl out on her own in a bit," Shi Qing said with a broad smile, her voice gentle and soothing.
"…"
Hearing this, the others couldn't help but burst out laughing.
"You…" Ye Nan facepalmed. "Could you at least make your lie a little more believable? Do you really think we're idiots?"
Bai Yilan was overcome with laughter, holding her belly. "Ouch, ouch, stop making me laugh. But it doesn't hurt as much now."
"Since it's not hurting, try to get some sleep. You won't feel the pain when you're asleep," Gu Xinran said, patting her gently.
Bai Yilan closed her eyes and tried to sleep. Just as she was drifting off, the pain returned, and this time it was even stronger than before, continuous and relentless, making it exceptionally hard to bear.
The others couldn't think of any other way to distract Yilan. They could only watch anxiously as she gritted her teeth in pain.
Late into the night, Yilan finally drifted into a drowsy sleep, but less than an hour later, she was woken by the pain again. This cycle repeated, draining her energy. Ye Nan gave her some chocolate to replenish her strength.
"Xinran, it hurts so much…" Yilan's voice was tinged with tears, and she had crumpled the bedsheet in her grip.
"I know, I know. I'm sorry, I…" Gu Xinran's voice choked. She couldn't help Yilan at all, could only watch her suffer.
"My sweet baby, please don't make Mommy suffer, okay?" Gu Xinran pressed her forehead against Yilan's belly, feeling so helpless she could only pray.
"Is it normal for it to hurt this much?? I'm going to get a doctor." Ye Nan rushed out.
A short while later, she returned with the doctor.
When the doctor entered, she was taken aback. It was one thing for the expectant mother to be crying in pain, but why were the family members also sobbing their hearts out?
"Doctor, please take a look. She can't take the pain anymore."
"It's time. Prepare for delivery." The doctor's words were a huge relief to them all.
"Xinran…" Yilan clutched Xinran's hand tightly.
"Doctor, can I go in?"
"Yes, yes, go change quickly."
Gu Xinran was overjoyed. She helped the nurses push the bed straight to the operating room.
Shi Qing and Ye Nan stood outside the door, looking at each other. Both their eyes were red, whether from heartache or excitement, they couldn't tell.
Inside the delivery room, Gu Xinran held Yilan's hand, constantly comforting her. She was sweating even more than Yilan, looking even more nervous.
"It's okay, don't be nervous. Deep breaths, push a little," a nurse said.
"Almost there, almost there! I can see the baby's head! A little more effort."
"Yilan, you can do it! We're about to meet our Xiao Ye."
Seeing that Yilan was exhausted, Gu Xinran kept encouraging her.
The thought of Xiao Ye gave Bai Yilan a surge of determination. Following the doctor's instructions, she breathed and pushed rhythmically.
Before long, a loud cry echoed through the operating room.
Neither of them had processed it yet. It was only after hearing the baby cry for a while that they realized she had been born.
"December 12th, 9:12 AM. A baby girl born via natural delivery. Congratulations to you both."
Gu Xinran was completely stunned, her mind blank for a moment.
As she watched the nurses bathe the little one, Gu Xinran still didn't move. She didn't even go over to see their child right away.
The two of them looked at each other. "I want to see her," Yilan said, her eyes full of anticipation.
Gu Xinran nodded. She waited until the nurses had finished bathing the baby and wrapped her in a swaddle before walking over. She solemnly took her child from the nurse's hands.
Gu Xinran took a deep breath and looked down at the little one in her arms. "Shh, don't cry," she cooed very gently.
Strangely enough, after she said just that one sentence, the little one's cries gradually subsided, and she snuggled obediently in her arms.
Gu Xinran looked at her closely. She was so small, only the length of her forearm. Her skin was reddish, and you could still see the lanugo.
Her little face wasn't wrinkled like other newborns; it was clean and quite cute. A tiny nose, thin lips—she looked so much like her. Once Gu Xinran started looking, she couldn't stop. She examined her from head to toe, even her tiny feet, her eyes filled with joy. She couldn't put her down. And the more she looked, the more she felt that she looked exactly like Xiao Ye.
Her gaze returned to the baby's face, full of love. Just as she was about to bring her to Yilan, her expression suddenly changed. She looked up at Yilan.
"What's wrong?" Seeing the smile vanish from her face, Bai Yilan's expression changed too, and she was terrified.
Gu Xinran didn't answer her. She brought the baby closer to her face, examining her under the light.
"What is it? Don't scare me!" Seeing Xinran suddenly burst into tears without warning, Yilan grew anxious.
Gu Xinran's lips trembled as she whispered, very, very softly, "It's her…"
"What?"
Gu Xinran brought the baby to Yilan. "It's her. It's our Xiao Ye. Look, on her forehead…"
Gu Xinran pointed to the baby's forehead. There was a birthmark there, in the shape of a scar—the very scar Xiao Ye had gotten in their past life from being abused by Gu Xinyuan.
Bai Yilan gently touched the birthmark. It was faint, but not hard to see, especially since she had just seen that scene in a dream not long ago. Hearing Xinran's words, she too became certain. This little one was their daughter from their past life, Xiao Ye. It was their Xiao Ye!
Bai Yilan wept with joy, large tears rolling down her cheeks. Her hands trembled as she held Xiao Ye.
Gu Xinran was also crying, holding her wife and daughter, all of them weeping in each other's arms.
The young nurses looked at each other, bewildered. They had seen parents get emotional holding their babies, but they had never seen anyone cry like this…
Outside the operating room, Shi Qing and Ye Nan were still waiting anxiously.
When the door opened, they immediately stood up and went over.
"Congratulations, Yilan has successfully given birth to a baby girl, weighing 5.2 pounds. She's incredibly cute. They'll be out shortly."
The two of them let out a sigh of relief, looked at each other, and couldn't help but cry with joy.
"Thank you, thank you." Ye Nan walked over and gave the doctor a large red envelope to express her gratitude.
Soon, the hospital bed was wheeled out. Shi Qing went over and stroked Yilan's head.
"You've worked hard."
"Mom, you worked hard too," Yilan said, looking at Shi Qing and smiling.
Shi Qing looked into Gu Xinran's arms and saw the little one wrapped in a pink swaddle. Her face immediately broke into a wide smile that she couldn't contain.
Back in the room, Shi Qing held the little one and wouldn't let go, her gaze softer than ever. Ye Nan felt jealous just watching.
Gu Xinran followed behind Shi Qing, waiting in line to hold the baby.
"Hey, hey, hey, that's enough. Are you going to hold her forever? Can't you see there's a line of people waiting behind you?" Ye Nan complained.
"Wait your turn," Shi Qing said coolly, glancing at her.
"???" That's not the attitude you had with me in bed the other day!
"Mom, I want to hold her~" Yilan said from the bed, her eyes full of longing.
Hearing this, Shi Qing glanced back at Gu Xinran. "What are you standing there for?"
"???" Gu Xinran looked confused. Under Shi Qing's intense gaze, she inexplicably walked over to Yilan and gave her a hug. After the hug, she was still full of questions. Was that what she meant???
"She said she wants to hold the baby! Give her the baby!" Ye Nan couldn't stand it anymore and urged her.
"Let me hold her a little longer. Just a little longer."
Bai Yilan didn't know whether to laugh or cry. "It's okay, you can hold her. No one's going to fight you for her." Seeing how much her mother loved the little one, she didn't argue.
"Does it still hurt?" Gu Xinran sat by the bed, holding Yilan to comfort her.
"Mhm, it hurts. But seeing Xiao Ye makes it all worth it."
Gu Xinran gently brushed away the strands of hair stuck to her forehead with sweat.
"You've worked hard," she comforted softly.
"You too."
The two smiled at each other and held each other tightly.
"You can't hold a newborn for too long. Put her down, quickly," Ye Nan said, keeping a close eye on Shi Qing.
Shi Qing was helpless. She pouted, extremely reluctant, and gently placed the baby in the small cradle.
Ye Nan immediately claimed the best viewing spot, carefully touching the baby's tiny hand. "So small," she murmured, comparing it to her own large hand.
"Look how beautiful her little nose is. Her mouth is just like Xinran's. Her eyebrows are like Yilan's, and her eye shape is like mine. They'll definitely be very expressive~"
"???"
"What does it have to do with you?" Shi Qing glanced at her. Was this person a little too narcissistic? Why did all the good-looking features have to resemble her?
"When Yilan was pregnant, I personally cooked every single meal. How could it have nothing to do with me?" Ye Nan said righteously.
"…"
"You can tell this little one is blessed just by looking at her. Her birth date and time are both auspicious. Today is their wedding anniversary, you know," Ye Nan said.
Gu Xinran and Bai Yilan heard this and were both stunned for a moment, suddenly remembering. December 12th, it really was. This little one really knew how to pick a date.
Thinking of this, Gu Xinran picked up her phone and glanced at Weibo. Her eyelid twitched.

Seeing this, Gu Xinran couldn't stay silent any longer. She took Yilan's hand and the baby's hand, snapped a photo of the three of them, and posted it on Weibo.

Qu Qi was busy working when Fang Jinghai suddenly burst in, her mouth open in excitement but unable to make a sound.
"What's wrong with you?"
"She… she… she gave birth!!!"
"Hm?" Qu Qi didn't react for a second, but in the next, she shot up from her seat, dug her phone out from under a pile of documents, checked Weibo, and then tried to call Gu Xinran, only to find the line busy.
"This woman, she gave birth and didn't even tell me first." Qu Qi was also incredibly excited. She went to Gu Xinran's Weibo to read the comments. When she saw everyone was looking forward to Xiao Ye growing up, she slyly reposted the Weibo with the caption, 【The boss only wants to be with her wife and doesn't want to work. How about we let the little boss take over? I happen to have two scripts that need a newborn. Let me know when you're free, and we can finalize it? @Gu Xinran [doge]】
"Pfft, Sister Qi, you're ruthless!"
"Hmph~ If she doesn't come back to work in a month, I'm going to her house to steal the baby."
After saying this, Qu Qi noticed Fang Jinghai was furiously typing on her phone.
"What are you doing?"
"Giving Sister Ran a heads-up to hide the baby well."
"???"
Gu Xinran had just hung up the phone when it started vibrating nonstop. She opened it to see that on Weibo, all her close friends had sent their blessings to her family, and then there was Qu Qi… huh? Qu Qi's post…
Gu Xinran looked confused and clicked to read the comments.
【Qu Qi: Yes, the little boss will still need acting guidance from the boss, and lessons on camera positioning from Teacher Bai.】
【Hahaha, the person above me is a devil hahaha】
【Hahahaha this cub has it so tough】
【Xiao Ye: This is all so sudden】
【Xiao Ye: I was just born and I'm already being forced into business?】
【Xinran: Be good, cub, go earn your own milk powder money :)】
【Hahahaha Little Baby Ye's future is all planned out】
【Hahahaha 'go earn your own milk powder money' is amazing. How much do you want? Big sister will buy it for you!】
【Anyone want to crowdfund milk powder for Baby Xiao Ye?】
【+1】
【Count me in! Let's buy my cub the best, most expensive milk powder!】
【Hahahaha life is hard, the cub has to perform hahaha】
Gu Xinran didn't know whether to laugh or cry. She showed the phone to Yilan, who also nearly died laughing.
As they were laughing, they suddenly heard the baby cry, and their attention was instantly drawn to her.
"Oh, oh, why is she crying?" Ye Nan was flustered, not knowing how to take care of a newborn.
"She's probably hungry." Shi Qing was more experienced. She bent down, carefully picked up the baby, and handed her to Yilan. Then she and Ye Nan turned and left the room.
Yilan finally got to hold the little one and was overjoyed. She affectionately nuzzled the baby's nose. "Be good, Xiao Ye, don't cry." She began to feed the little one with a doting expression.
One hand carefully supported her tiny body while the other gently patted her, clearly still a little nervous.
"It's been so, so long since I've held her," Yilan said, her eyes welling up with tears again.
"I know. Don't cry. From now on, we'll hold her every day, until we can't hold her anymore," Xinran said, wiping away her tears.
"Okay."
They looked at each other. Although they knew it probably wasn't good to kiss a baby, they couldn't resist pecking the little one's cheeks. She was so fragrant, sweet, soft, and tender that one kiss just made them want to kiss her more.
Gu Xinran couldn't hold back and planted a few more kisses. The little one shook her head slightly.
"See? You've annoyed her. Go stand on the side," Yilan chided.
Gu Xinran looked aggrieved. But she's so kissable!
She took a deep breath and forced herself not to lean in for another kiss.
Her eyes were glued to the little one, watching her gulp down her milk, a silly smile unconsciously spreading across her face.
Gu Xinran reached out and gently stroked the birthmark on Xiao Ye's forehead. "This birthmark disappeared just now. Why has it reappeared?"
"It seems to only show up when she's emotional," Bai Yilan had noticed it too. When her mother was holding her earlier, the little one had been very calm, and the birthmark was so faint it was almost invisible. But after she cried just now, it became much more obvious.
Gu Xinran found it fascinating. She hesitated for a moment, then reached out and pinched the little one's ear.
"What are you doing?" Bai Yilan was stunned and immediately slapped her hand away.
"I want to see if she'll cry again."
"?"
"I'll kill you!" Bai Yilan's eyes immediately went wide!
