DDT - Chapter 71
Chapter 71: Female Ghost × Little Pitiful One (3)
The next morning, the effects of the drug having worn off, Yi Shuhan opened her eyes early. Despite having spent the night on the floor without a blanket, she didn't feel the slightest bit cold. On the contrary, a constant warmth enveloped her back, a steady and unending source of heat.
She pushed herself up from the floor. The sudden movement jolted Chi Junluo, who had been in a daze all night, back to her senses. Seeing Yi Shuhan stand up and leave her embrace, she quickly floated up from the ground, wrapped her arms around Yi Shuhan's neck from behind, and hung her entire ghostly self onto Yi Shuhan's back.
As Yi Shuhan stood up, she clearly felt the source of warmth disappear from behind her. But just a few seconds later, it pressed against her again.
Yi Shuhan: ...
Great. She could now be certain that besides herself, there was some unknown thing in this room. And this thing had suddenly latched onto her, seemingly with a particular fondness for her back.
Judging from what happened yesterday, this unknown thing ought to have hand-like limbs. It was probably a humanoid ghost.
Yi Shuhan analyzed the situation. But ghosts were yin entities. People who encountered ghosts usually described feeling a sinister, bone-chilling cold. Why was her suspected haunting so... warm???
It was truly baffling.
Yi Shuhan moved around the room a bit. The heat source followed her like a shadow. It seemed she wouldn't be able to shake this invisible thing off anytime soon.
She still had some doubts, worried that she might be hallucinating. She shook her head, pushing the thought aside.
Before long, the wake-up bell rang in the hallway. The hospital played an alarm every morning at seven-thirty. A good sleep schedule was fundamental to the patients' recovery.
Nurses opened the doors to the wards one by one. Patients rubbed their eyes, stretched, and climbed out of bed, obediently lining up to wash up in the restroom.
The door to Room No. 1 was also opened. Chi Junluo, still clinging to Yi Shuhan, moved with her step by step toward the door. This time, unexpectedly, the invisible wall was gone. Attached to Yi Shuhan's back, Chi Junluo left the room without any obstruction.
Chi Junluo's eyes sparkled. This was great! She no longer had to be trapped in that gloomy room!
She rested her ghostly head on Yi Shuhan's shoulder, following her around.
Chi Junluo wanted to see if she could float around freely outside, so she let go. But the moment she did, a powerful suction force emanated from Room No. 1, nearly pulling her back inside. Fortunately, Chi Junluo was quick. She instantly wrapped herself around Yi Shuhan's body, clinging tightly with her arms and legs, and the suction force vanished.
Chi Junluo peeked her head out from behind Yi Shuhan's back and sized up the hospital. More than ten years had passed, and the hospital had been renovated. The Third Hospital now looked completely different from before. Chi Junluo found it all novel, her head swiveling back and forth on Yi Shuhan's shoulder. As Yi Shuhan walked, she felt an inexplicable itch near her ear. She reached up to touch it but found nothing. Full of questions, she went to take her daily medication.
Chi Junluo rested on Yi Shuhan's shoulder, watching her tilt her head back and swallow a handful of pills with water. She sighed softly. This child... she really has it tough.
Under the influence of the medication, Yi Shuhan's emotions grew numb. She felt no great sorrow, nor any great joy, and found it difficult to concentrate on anything. In the library lounge, Yi Shuhan opened a book on her lap as usual, leaned her whole body back against the sofa, and stared into the distance with a somewhat vacant gaze, lost in a daze.
Chi Junluo found herself squished against the back of the sofa, which felt a bit ridiculous. She moved to sit on the sofa beside Yi Shuhan. With nothing else to do, she began to stare at Yi Shuhan's profile.
The library was quiet. The patients, who found it hard to settle down, didn't much like reading, couldn't focus on it, and struggled to sit still. Therefore, this place suited both the ghost Chi Junluo and Yi Shuhan, who didn't want to stay in Room No. 1.
After some time, Chi Junluo suddenly felt her vision darken. When she came to her senses, she saw someone had sat down on the very sofa she was occupying.
Chi Junluo: ...
Which meant he was, in effect, sitting on top of the ghostly Chi Junluo.
Could you please show some respect for this ghost?! Don't female ghosts deserve some dignity?!
Chi Junluo stood up in a huff. The person sitting on the sofa next to Yi Shuhan only felt a chill pass through his body, making him shiver reflexively.
Chi Junluo moved to Yi Shuhan's other side, glaring resentfully at the yellow-haired man sitting in what should have been her seat.
There were so many empty seats in the library, but the yellow-haired man had to squeeze onto this small sofa next to Yi Shuhan. He was definitely up to no good!
The movement beside her pulled Yi Shuhan back to awareness. When she saw clearly that it was the yellow-haired man sitting next to her, she frowned slightly.
The yellow-haired man was a new patient. Yi Shuhan had once overheard a few patients with connections talking about him. This man had accidentally killed someone outside, and to protect him, his family had pulled strings to get him a certificate of mental illness. Although he had escaped legal punishment, he had to stay at the Third Hospital for a very long time.
The patients had been indignant, saying that people like him were the reason mental illness was stigmatized. But when they saw Yi Shuhan approach, they had shut their mouths and said no more.
Because of this, Yi Shuhan had a particularly bad impression of the yellow-haired man, not to mention that this guy was always trying to get her attention, which was incredibly annoying.
With a stony expression, Yi Shuhan snapped her book shut with a thwack. She stood up, intending to put the book back and return to her Room No. 1. Compared to this vexing man, Room No. 1 suddenly didn't seem so unbearable.
The yellow-haired man saw that Yi Shuhan was about to leave before he had even said a word. Feeling slighted, he grew angry from embarrassment.
The yellow-haired man shot up and grabbed Yi Shuhan's arm. Yi Shuhan was pulled back a step. She tried to shake him off but found she couldn't. "Let go," she said, her tone icy.
"I came over here especially for you, and you're trying to leave before I've even said anything? You really don't give a damn about me, do you?" the yellow-haired man said arrogantly, his grip tightening.
The pain in her arm made Yi Shuhan frown. Seeing this idiotic yellow-haired man gripping her heroine so forcefully and speaking so arrogantly, Chi Junluo's anger flared. She herself couldn't bear to hurt her Shuhan, so where did this bastard come from, acting so rudely???
Chi Junluo couldn't touch other people, but don't forget, she still had the almighty Power of the Heavenly Dao.
Chi Junluo placed one hand on Yi Shuhan's shoulder and began to gather the Power of the Heavenly Dao in the other. Then, she took a step forward and slammed her right fist viciously into the yellow-haired man's stomach. As expected, she felt immense resistance as the punch connected.
Yi Shuhan was just wondering whether she should call loudly for a nurse when she saw the yellow-haired man in front of her suddenly release her arm. He stumbled back several steps and fell to the floor, his back arched like a shrimp. He clutched his stomach with both hands, beads of sweat trickling down his forehead.
Yi Shuhan: ?? What is wrong with these psychos these days??
Seeing that she was free, Yi Shuhan tossed the book at the yellow-haired man's face and turned to run away with a patter of footsteps.
The yellow-haired man, with a book plastered to his face: Fuck your mom!
Chi Junluo clung to Yi Shuhan's back as the human and ghost returned to Room No. 1. The door slammed shut with a bang. Yi Shuhan sat on the mattress to rest, panting slightly from the run. Although she didn't understand what had just happened, she was thankful she had managed to escape. She wanted nothing to do with that disgusting man.
The warmth on her back gave her a strange sense of security.
Once she had calmed down, a sharp pain shot through her arm.
Yi Shuhan pushed up her sleeve. A red, swollen ring had already formed on her slender arm. Chi Junluo, whose head was resting on her shoulder, naturally saw it too. Her heart ached. She reached out and gently rubbed Yi Shuhan's arm, but it didn't seem to have any effect.
Back in the library, the yellow-haired man lay on the floor for a long while before he managed to struggle back to his feet. He resentfully stomped on the fallen book a few times, then stood up straight and lifted his patient gown. There, on his single ab muscle just above his navel, was a bluish-purple fist print.
Large beads of sweat broke out on the yellow-haired man's forehead again. He felt a chill run down his spine. It was broad daylight. A moment ago, it had just been him and that girl; there was no one else around. How could he have been punched out of nowhere, and be left with such a terrifying fist mark? Could it be... that this hospital was haunted???
Suddenly, the yellow-haired man felt that the empty library had become incredibly sinister, as if countless pairs of eyes were staring at him.
The yellow-haired man shifted his feet and started walking toward the door, pretending to be nonchalant. "Ahem." He coughed lightly, as if making a sound would make him less afraid.
Finally, he reached the doorway. With one step, he broke into a mad dash, fleeing the library and running toward a crowded area. Damn that library, he was never coming back again!!!
Night fell.
The hallway gradually quieted down as the patients, having taken their medication on time, all went to bed.
As it neared dawn, Yi Shuhan tossed and turned, unable to sleep. She went to the door and knocked loudly. The night nurse heard the sound, got up from her chair, and walked slowly to Room No. 1. "What is it?" the nurse asked, yawning.
"I need to use the restroom," Yi Shuhan said.
The nurse slowly opened the door and then returned to her chair. She was sleepy and hadn't rested well during the day. She wanted to doze off for a bit. As for the door, she could just lock it during her rounds later in the night.
Yi Shuhan padded toward the restroom, with Chi Junluo still clinging to her, her two hands dangling in front of Yi Shuhan's chest and her head resting on her left shoulder.
When they reached the restroom, Chi Junluo rested her hands on Yi Shuhan's shoulders, waiting outside the stall for her to finish. After Yi Shuhan came out, she latched back on.
Yi Shuhan lowered her head to wash her hands at the sink. After she was done, she lifted her head and her eyes widened in shock.
Chi Junluo had originally buried her head in the crook of Yi Shuhan's neck. Feeling Yi Shuhan shudder, she curiously lifted her head. In the mirror, she saw a pale face and a cascade of black hair draped over Yi Shuhan's body, with two pale, slender hands hanging stiffly in front of Yi Shuhan's chest.
Then, countless scenes from horror movies she had seen before flashed through her mind. On top of that, they were in an empty restroom with only Yi Shuhan present.
Chi Junluo forgot that she herself was a ghost.
Terrified by the eerie scene, she shrieked: "Aaaaaah!!! A ghost!!!"
The sharp, female scream echoed throughout the restroom and even reached the hallway. The sound-activated lights in both the restroom and the hallway instantly flickered on.
Yi Shuhan reached up and rubbed her ears, which had been unexpectedly assaulted.
Yi Shuhan: ... I haven't even screamed yet, what the hell are you screaming for?!!
