VBNWDW - Chapter 6

Chapter 6

A little later, the nurse pushed her cart out of the hallway. The lights suddenly dimmed, and a sweeping silence filled the spacious hospital room.

The bathroom floor was still damp. Hearing a rustling sound behind her, Luo Yueqing judged that the other woman had already pulled up the covers and lain down.

From the moment she had returned until now, nothing untoward had happened, which brought a strange sense of relief to both Luo Yueqing and the System.

Sleep had not yet come for her. She picked up her phone, and its faint glow illuminated her exquisite features. A moment later, she put it down again.

When other people transmigrated to new worlds, they were either born into wealth and power or, at the very least, started with a clean slate as a penniless orphan, free of debt.

But the original owner of this body was burdened by her parents and drowning in debt. The moment she opened her phone, she was greeted by debt collection messages.

Whenever Luo Yueqing thought about this, her head throbbed. She suddenly found herself envying the great villain behind her. At least her parents were alive, and she had a group and property to inherit. If anyone should have turned to the dark side, it was her.

The subject of her grumbling, Xi Zhoulu, was clearly not asleep either. She had just forced down some plain congee, and her stomach felt bloated. Combined with having spent the entire day lying down, sleep was hard to come by.

The evening breeze blew the osmanthus blossoms from the trees below, and dew condensed on the veins of the leaves. Luo Yueqing picked up her phone again, then set it down. Behind her, the other person shifted with difficulty, pulling back the thin blanket that had slipped off.

A few moments later, Luo Yueqing also turned over, facing the dark ceiling. It wasn't completely dark, as a small, dim yellow night light remained on in the corner. But being in a hospital room, it still felt oppressive, making it hard to see clearly.

"Miss Xi, still awake?" she asked suddenly. Perhaps because her voice was very soft, it lacked its earlier frivolity.

Xi Zhoulu pulled the blanket higher, her eyes wide open. She paused, not wanting to speak, but then she remembered what had happened earlier. A trace of guilt pricked at her, so she replied, "For now."

Luo Yueqing took the opportunity to ask, "Not used to sharing a room with someone else?"

"It's fine," Xi Zhoulu answered coolly.

"Never done it before?"

Xi Zhoulu frowned but answered anyway, "I've never shared a room with an Alpha before."

She hadn't wanted to reply, but her earlier actions had been too excessive, and she still felt a pang of guilt. As a result, she was being more tolerant than usual.

Luo Yueqing chuckled softly. "Then I'm quite honored."

This sudden flattery did not please Xi Zhoulu; in fact, it made her frown slightly.

"Don't you worry. I undergo a mental power control assessment every month. Oh, right, I was tested this afternoon, too. Very stable," Luo Yueqing said, her voice laced with amusement, making the troublesome matter sound effortless.

A mental power assessment was a mandatory test for every Mental Guide. They had to ensure their own mental state was stable enough and that they could control themselves before they were allowed to work in the field and treat patients.

At the same time, sufficiently stable mental power also allowed an Alpha or Omega to better control their pheromones, susceptibility periods, and other issues. At the very least, it would prevent them from randomly marking someone during a susceptibility period or causing the pheromones of those around them to fall into disarray.

Luo Yueqing was now reassuring the other woman, telling her she had no need to worry about sharing a room with an Alpha like her.

Hearing this, Xi Zhoulu merely nodded. She had, in fact, already known.

While Luo Yueqing was washing up, a subordinate had entered the room to explain what had happened during the day. They had handed her Luo Yueqing's mental power assessment report and assured her that guards were posted on both sides of the room. All Xi Zhoulu had to do was call out, and they would rush in immediately.

That was the real reason she was lying here so calmly. Her current sleeplessness was simply due to an inability to fall asleep.

Perhaps because the other woman's attitude was decent, Xi Zhoulu's voice softened as she offered a brief explanation. "Dr. Luo has had a long day. You should rest early."

She paused, then added, "If anything happens, I'll wake you."

As her words fell, the sound of rustling fabric suddenly filled the air. Luo Yueqing turned in a single motion, lying on her side to face Xi Zhoulu.

Xi Zhoulu's hand instinctively moved toward the edge of the bed.

Luo Yueqing saw it but didn't mention it. Instead, she said, "If Miss Xi can't sleep either, why don't we conduct a short treatment session?"

"Hm?"

"About half an hour of mental power guidance? That way, you can be discharged sooner," Luo Yueqing continued, her tone frank, as if she had no ulterior motives.

An idea sparked in Xi Zhoulu's mind. Perhaps it was her lingering guilt, or perhaps it was her desire to leave the hospital sooner, but after a moment's hesitation, she agreed.

The next second, Luo Yueqing threw off her covers, got out of bed, and dragged a nearby chair to the bedside. The entire sequence was a single, fluid motion, as if she couldn't wait to begin.

This made the ever-suspicious Omega feel uneasy. Just as she was about to refuse, she heard Luo Yueqing's casual question, "How are you feeling now?"

"Alright," Xi Zhoulu replied instinctively.

In truth, her condition was already quite good. She had been tormented by her chaotic mental power for some time, starting with occasional sharp, stabbing pains that progressed to persistent headaches and even fainting spells. If Luo Yueqing hadn't briefly sorted it out for her yesterday, her situation today would likely have been much worse.

Luo Yueqing raised an eyebrow. Having inherited all of the original owner's memories, she was naturally well aware of the woman's condition. She had no idea how much this person could endure, to be able to tolerate such intense pain while remaining so vigilant and suspicious.

Her tone shifted as she said directly, "Then do you need to relax a little?"

"Don't be too nervous. Miss Xi, you should have felt our compatibility. It won't be particularly difficult," Luo Yueqing soothed in a gentle voice.

"Don't be too tense. If anything feels off, you can stop me at any time."

"Come on, take a few deep breaths…"

Luo Yueqing leaned back in her chair, appearing somewhat frivolous and casual even now. She rested against the backrest with one leg crossed over the other, the tip of her foot bobbing up and down. The silk nightgown followed the motion, rising and falling to reveal a small glimpse of skin.

Outside, the clouds gathered into a thick mass, covering the sky like a stone slab and blocking out every trace of light.

Xi Zhoulu pressed her lips together, her gaze shifting away from the other woman. She followed her instructions, taking deep breaths, and then a tide of mental power surged toward her.

It was a feeling difficult to put into words, like being enveloped in a warm nest. Her perennially cold fingertips gradually warmed, and even her paralyzed legs felt a rare sense of comfort.

Without realizing it, Xi Zhoulu's furrowed brow smoothed out, and her hand, which had been gripping the edge of the bed, relaxed its hold.

The woman sitting by the bed gradually leaned closer, bending down. The collar of her thin nightgown slipped, and her long hair cascaded down, brushing against the back of Xi Zhoulu's hand.

All was quiet, save for the distant chirping of insects.

Compared to the Omega whose breathing had steadied, Luo Yueqing was clearly exerting more effort.

The effects of their compatibility were affecting her as well. On one hand, she was being pulled into a gentle paradise; on the other, she had to maintain her rationality and control her mental power to perform the guidance.

The situation was more difficult than she had imagined. After all, their last encounter had been just a brief glimpse. Now, with Xi Zhoulu's cooperation, she finally understood just how severe her condition was.

Countless threads were tangled into knots, bouncing around in her mind like tumbleweeds blown by the wind, desperately searching for the only way out of this harsh desert.

Luo Yueqing's hand rested on the mattress, struggling to support her body.

A soft, gentle strand of mental power slowly squeezed into the tangled mess, then carefully began to pull.

At times, Xi Zhoulu would unconsciously resist. Her guard was always up, whether she was fully conscious or on the verge of passing out, as if it were etched into her very bones.

So, Luo Yueqing had to soothe her first before she could proceed with her work.

Time passed, minute by minute. The moon finally appeared outside the window, illuminating the spacious hospital room.

The incredibly warm mental power slowly receded like the tide. Xi Zhoulu opened her eyes, and the next second, she felt a pressure on her forearm.

She turned her head to see that the once-energetic woman was now slumped over at the bedside, her body pressing down on her hand…

She blinked, assessing her physical state. The effects of the treatment were obvious; the prolonged, sharp, stabbing pain had indeed subsided.

Xi Zhoulu let out a small sigh of relief as a bead of sweat finally rolled down her forehead. Then she looked at Luo Yueqing again. This time, her gaze held less suspicion, and she didn't pull her arm away.

She quietly watched the Alpha beside her, a hint of confusion and complexity in her eyes—an extremely rare emotion for her, which vanished in an instant.

"Luo Yueqing…" A low, hoarse voice sounded, so soft it seemed the wind could carry it away. Naturally, it failed to wake the other woman.

Xi Zhoulu fell silent for a moment, then began to study her.

This reckless, frivolous Alpha had a face more stunning than most Omegas. The upward tilt of her eyes was like a silver hook, and at the very tip was a small, faint gray mole. Even in sleep, her alluring and flamboyant charm was not diminished in the slightest, much like her pheromones…

Ecuadorian Red Wine Rose.

A rare, precious, and exceedingly beautiful variety. It was said that in an age without iron tools, people would brave the many dangers of the dense forest, grasping the thorn-covered stems with their bare hands to carefully pluck the roses and sell them to nobles who would pay a fortune for a single flower.

A faint scent of wine-infused roses still lingered in the air, mingling with the aroma of burning charcoal. It was a surprisingly harmonious combination, not at all unpleasant, and it brought to mind something warm and sweet, like rose milk tea.

She didn't know how long she stared, dazed, before she remembered to pull back her numb arm. But this rose was like a clingy cat; not only did she not let go, but she pressed even closer, hugging it tightly.

Xi Zhoulu froze. The softness pressing through the thin fabric enveloped her entire forearm. If she so much as lifted her hand slightly, she would touch that scorching curve.

Her breath caught, and her barely noticeable Adam's apple bobbed up and down.

"Luo Yueqing," she couldn't help but raise her voice.

"Mmm…" The response was a mumble as the woman lifted her head in a daze.

Taking advantage of the moment she sat up slightly, Xi Zhoulu swiftly pulled her hand back. Her deliberately cold voice was stiff. "Go back to your own bed and sleep."

Luo Yueqing was a bit dazed. The sleepy mist in the corners of her eyes nearly condensed into beads, threatening to fall with a single blink.

Seeing this, Xi Zhoulu could only soften her tone slightly. "It's very late. Go back to sleep now."

Only then did the other woman nod. Not lucid enough to think it through, she slowly got up and climbed into her own bed.

The night grew deeper. The evening breeze continued to blow, rustling the leaves on the trees.

Xi Zhoulu was silent for a moment before finally closing her eyes and drifting off to sleep.
