After Escaping Marriage - Chapter 84
Chapter 84
Sicheng No. 1 Middle School, as the city's key middle school with the highest matriculation rate, had strict school rules and discipline. Fighting was punished severely; violators were invariably expelled.
If Xiang Tianyou were Xiao Qing or Yu Zhou, with excellent grades, and given that this incident had extenuating circumstances, perhaps the school would have dealt with it leniently. But Xiang Tianyou was a former "school tyrant," frequently late or leaving early, stirring up trouble, and disregarding school discipline. He had been caught by the dean of discipline numerous times. While he had no major demerits, he had accumulated a pile of minor ones. This time, it was a case of "multiple offenses punished together."
Xiang Kang had been on a business trip yesterday. When he received a call from the police station saying his son had been involved in a group fight and was in custody, asking him to pick him up, Xiang Kang smashed a cup.
Today, when the school decided on the punishment, Xiang Kang, clutching his phone with bulging eyes, didn't even go home. He had the driver take him straight from the airport to the school.
His anger, suppressed for a day, erupted like a volcano.
This little bastard!
Xiang Kang's kick was too sudden, even the series of actions leading up to him kicking the door open was extremely abrupt. Like a rabbit darting and a falcon swooping, Xiang Tianyou crashed into the desk, knocking over the chair, and fell heavily to the ground before the teachers in the office could react.
Crash—
The male teachers rushed out from their seats and managed to grab Xiang Kang's arms, preventing his second kick from landing on the boy on the floor.
Xiang Kang roared, "Get up for me!"
Yu Qingtang knelt in front of Xiang Tianyou, shielding most of the curled-up boy's body with her back. Xiang Tianyou's eyes were tightly shut, his lips pale, and his body trembled slightly.
Yu Qingtang didn't dare touch him, asking worriedly, "Are you okay? Where did you get hit?"
Xiang Tianyou gasped for a couple of breaths and began to cough violently, a morbid flush rising on his bloodless face.
He supported himself with one hand on the ground. Yu Qingtang lent him a hand, and Xiang Tianyou struggled to his feet. Cheng Zhanxi righted the chair and placed it behind Xiang Tianyou. Some parents didn't deserve to sit, so let him stand.
She had anticipated that Xiang Kang wouldn't be like other parents, but she hadn't expected him to start beating without asking for the reason.
Xiang Tianyou didn't dare to sit. Cheng Zhanxi pressed his shoulders, making him sit down. His back was arched; he must have hit his back.
Xiang Kang roared loudly, "Little bastard, get over here!"
He was over 1.8 meters tall, in his forties, and in his prime. Two male teachers almost couldn't hold him back. He lunged forward several times, only to be blocked by Cheng Zhanxi.
Yu Qingtang's voice wasn't loud, yet it easily pierced through the man's fury.
"Xiang Tianyou's father, I asked you here to discuss how to salvage this situation, not for you to hit him. Violence doesn't solve problems."
Xiang Kang was held tightly by the two male teachers, unable to move. He shook his arms and said coldly, "Let go of me."
The two male teachers looked at Yu Qingtang, who nodded.
Xiang Kang looked at Cheng Zhanxi, who was still protectively in front of Xiang Tianyou, and temporarily reined in his anger. "What solution do you have?"
Yu Qingtang asked, "Don't you want to ask your son why he fought?"
Xiang Tianyou glanced in his father's direction.
Xiang Kang snorted coldly, "A fight is a fight, what's there to ask why? Not studying properly in school, learning from those hooligans. I spent so much money to get him into No. 1 Middle School, not for him to become a gangster!" The more he spoke, the angrier he became. He tried to bypass Cheng Zhanxi to slap Xiang Tianyou, but Cheng Zhanxi moved faster, grabbing his wrist.
Xiang Kang casually tried to shake her off but surprisingly couldn't.
His eyes widened slightly.
Cheng Zhanxi's gaze was sharp.
Xiang Kang sheepishly avoided her gaze, pretended to adjust his sleeve, and said, "I don't want to know why. Just tell me what solution there is."
Yu Qingtang still explained, "Those hooligans were harassing a classmate. Xiang Tianyou fought them to help his classmate."
Xiang Kang asked, "Was the classmate male or female?"
Yu Qingtang: "A girl."
Xiang Kang looked at his son, whose face was still covered in bruises, sneered, and said with a sarcastic smile, "Well, well, haven't even grown all your feathers yet and already learned how to pick up girls. And you still need your old man to clean up your mess."
Xiang Tianyou clenched his fists, his expression a mixture of humiliation and anger.
Cheng Zhanxi placed both hands on his shoulders, silently comforting him.
Xiang Tianyou looked back at her, tears welling up.
Cheng Zhanxi said, "Teacher Yu, I'll take him out first." With such a father, Xiang Tianyou would only face continuous humiliation here.
Yu Qingtang nodded.
Cheng Zhanxi deliberately steered far away from Xiang Kang, leading Xiang Tianyou out by the wrist.
A flicker of displeasure crossed Xiang Kang's face.
Not far from the office door, Cheng Zhanxi stopped. She held Xiang Tianyou's wrists with both hands, looked into his eyes, and said gently but firmly, "Xiang Tianyou, you are an upright person, a good student, and a good classmate."
Xiang Tianyou's throat tightened, unable to speak.
He tilted his head up, looking at the corridor ceiling, his eyes visibly red.
Cheng Zhanxi wrapped her hand around the back of his head and pressed his face into her shoulder.
The boy's low sobs reached her ears, his tears dampening Cheng Zhanxi's shoulder.
"Why..." he heard his own hoarse, choked voice, not knowing whom he was asking.
A cold north wind blew through the corridor. The boy's school uniform was neat and clean as he cried, suppressed and trembling, on his teacher's shoulder.
Cheng Zhanxi suddenly remembered that evening when Yu Qingtang came out from Xiang Tianyou's home visit, sat lost in thought in the pavilion, dazed for a long time, and muttered something.
She had also asked: Why?
Cheng Zhanxi looked up at the clear blue sky outside the corridor. A few birds fluttered out from the tall plane trees, flying leisurely across the sky.
...
Class 7, Grade 10.
During the break, the classroom erupted in a clamor, everyone talking about the weekend's events.
"Those hooligans are too much! It's bad enough they don't study, but they also come to harm us."
"I heard Xiang Tianyou is going to be expelled."
"No way? He was clearly doing a good deed. Is the school that unreasonable?"
"I think he should get an award!"
"I think so too."
"It's not a matter of reasonability." The student who spoke lowered their voice a bit. "How many times has Xiang Tianyou been warned before? He's read self-criticisms at the flagpole more than two or three times, right? The school has wanted to expel him for a long time. This time, he was unlucky and walked right into it."
"So that's how it is." The students sighed.
But he's changed for the better now.
And he acted heroically and helped others, can't that make up for his past mistakes?
The sound of a chair leg scraping came from a corner of the classroom. The students turned in unison to look at Yu Zhou, who had stood up.
Yu Zhou went out.
The students sighed again.
Yu Zhou knocked on the door of the Dean of Discipline's office. Director Tao happened to be in. "Come in."
Yu Zhou took a deep breath and walked in.
Director Tao put down his pen, looked at the gentle and refined girl before him, and said mildly, "What is it?"
Yu Zhou said, "I'm here to plead for Xiang Tianyou."
Director Tao said, "Sit."
A girl being harassed by hooligans from another school, leading to a classmate getting into a group fight with them – if word got out, some people would gossip, and rumors would spread. That's how they start. So, when Xiang Tianyou explained to the school, he didn't mention Yu Zhou's name. Yu Qingtang also told the class not to spread it around.
Yu Zhou mustered her courage and said, "Director Tao, this whole incident started because of me. If anyone is to be punished, punish me. I'm willing to accept the demerit."
...
Yu Qingtang went to see the principal.
She brought Xiang Tianyou's steadily improving exam scores from the past month. Xiang Tianyou's name hadn't appeared on the school's public criticism board for a long time, and his name was missing from the tardiness list in the class's daily log. He was genuinely changing for the better. For a student willing to improve, he should be given a chance to reform, which was also in line with No. 1 Middle School's educational philosophy.
She vouched for him as his homeroom teacher, assuring that Xiang Tianyou would not commit any more disciplinary violations, and sought to get him a probationary punishment instead of expulsion.
...
A seat was empty in the back row of Class 7. Xiang Tianyou had been ordered to go home and reflect since Monday afternoon.
The school's official punishment hadn't been announced yet. Expelling a student required approval from the Education Bureau. Since it wasn't official, there was still room for maneuver.
Fortunately, it was the end of the semester, and all the new lessons were finished. The last week was mainly for review. Yu Qingtang collected a set of materials and test papers for each subject and, together with Cheng Zhanxi, delivered them to the entrance of his residential complex every evening. Xiang Tianyou would come out under the twilight to pick them up.
Xiang Kang didn't hit him again. It was unclear whether his anger had been vented with that kick in the office or if he simply couldn't be bothered.
Xiang Tianyou was young, and his face healed quickly. The swelling in his eyes went down, the bruises faded, and the cut on his lip scabbed over, making him look like a handsome young man again.
That evening, as he took the study materials from Yu Qingtang, he asked uneasily, "Teacher Yu, what if I really get expelled?"
Yu Qingtang gently ruffled the boy's short hair and said, "You won't. Don't scare yourself."
Xiang Tianyou shrugged, feigning indifference with a grin. "It's okay if I get expelled. It's not like there are no other schools. My dad won't let me become a street punk; he'd find it too embarrassing. If not No. 1 Middle, there's No. 2 or No. 3."
Yu Qingtang remained silent.
The corners of Xiang Tianyou's eyes reddened imperceptibly. "I just... I'll miss you and Teacher Cheng a little."
If he went to another school, he would no longer be Yu Qingtang's student. Yu Qingtang wouldn't tutor him individually, wouldn't take him out on weekends, wouldn't look at him with expectant eyes, wouldn't buy him a cake when his parents forgot his birthday and let him secretly eat it in the office so other students wouldn't find out.
Teacher Cheng would call him Xiao Tian, play with him, scream with him in haunted houses. Sometimes she was very childish, deliberately vying for Teacher Yu's attention with him. Other times, she acted very mature, always saying things that made him unconsciously believe her. She told him he wasn't wrong, that he was an upright person, a good classmate, a good student, and that he deserved to be loved.
If he left them, he might turn bad again. He really didn't want to be a bad student anymore.
Yu Qingtang still offered the same pale comfort, "You won't."
Xiang Tianyou walked back under the twilight, his figure disappearing into the residential complex.
Yu Qingtang watched his retreating figure, standing there for a long time.
Cheng Zhanxi put an arm around her shoulder. "Do your best and leave the rest to fate. You've done all you can. Don't blame yourself." Yu Qingtang didn't move.
Cheng Zhanxi held her hand and added, "Even if he transfers to another school, he can still hang out with us on weekends. We can visit him when we have time."
Yu Qingtang said slowly, "It's not the same."
Cheng Zhanxi squeezed her hand tighter.
Yu Qingtang said, "Cheng Zhanxi, I'm very sad."
Cheng Zhanxi turned her by the shoulders, gently hugged her, and tenderly nuzzled her cheek.
"Don't be sad."
"I don't want him to leave."
"He won't leave. There will be a way."
"Cheng Zhanxi."
"Hmm?"
Can you stay by my side this time?
Yu Qingtang's knuckles bent, gripping Cheng Zhanxi's back so tightly they turned white.
In the end, she didn't ask the question.
On Thursday, Xiang Tianyou's punishment was announced. The school's final decision was probation. For six months from the date of the punishment, Xiang Tianyou would be under observation. Any further misconduct would result in immediate expulsion. If he showed positive progress, he could apply to have the punishment rescinded.
Class 7's PE class in the afternoon.
"I heard Xiang Tianyou's dad donated a building to the school."
"It's good to be rich."
"Xiang Tianyou doesn't have to be expelled, and it benefits the school. I think this is a good outcome. It doesn't harm anyone else's interests."
"I think so too. Everyone's happy."
"Yu Zhou cried secretly several times. Now she can be happy."
"Xiang Tianyou is so handsome! Doesn't he look even cooler with the bruise on his lip? What's that called? A badge of honor!"
"Hahahaha, you're just lusting after his face."
The girls chatted quietly around Cheng Zhanxi. Cheng Zhanxi leaned back on her hands on the mat, looking at the basketball court in the distance.
On the steps of the flagpole to the left of the basketball court sat a tall, slender boy. He was staring blankly at the school path opposite him, lost in thought.
Cheng Zhanxi stood up.
Tong Feifei: "Teacher Cheng, where are you going?"
Cheng Zhanxi patted her head and strode towards the solitary Xiang Tianyou by the flagpole.
Xiang Tianyou's short hair was ruffled. He ducked his neck and called out without looking up, "Teacher Cheng." In the school, only Cheng Zhanxi dared to casually ruffle his hair.
Xiang Tianyou took a tissue from his pocket, placed it on the spot beside him, and Cheng Zhanxi sat down. "What are you thinking about?"
Xiang Tianyou said honestly, "About my dad."
Cheng Zhanxi asked unhurriedly, "What about him?"
Xiang Tianyou said, "I was thinking... Teacher Yu?" His eyes suddenly lit up.
Cheng Zhanxi thought to herself, You've got some nerve, still thinking about Teacher Yu and your dad??? Are you tired of living???
Xiang Tianyou smiled and raised his voice, "Teacher Yu!"
She followed Xiang Tianyou's gaze and saw Yu Qingtang, dressed in black, standing under a large tree by the basketball court steps.
Cheng Zhanxi and Xiang Tianyou waved at her simultaneously.
Yu Qingtang came down the steps and sat beside Cheng Zhanxi.
Cheng Zhanxi naturally took Yu Qingtang's hand.
Cheng Zhanxi: "Teacher Yu, what brings you to the sports field?"
Yu Qingtang said lightly, "Just taking a walk."
Cheng Zhanxi pretended to believe her, tracing circles on Yu Qingtang's palm with her fingertip. Yu Qingtang clasped her fingers, telling her not to be naughty.
Xiang Tianyou turned his head to look at the scenery.
After the two teachers finished their flirting, Cheng Zhanxi finally remembered him. "What were you saying about your dad just now?"
Xiang Tianyou said, "I was wondering if he actually loves me." After a pause, he continued, "Not just now, I've always wondered about this. Does he actually love me, but just uses the wrong methods? When he hits me, is there a shred of sincerity, a desire for me to be better? Does he feel heartbroken too? Could it be?"
He looked at the two teachers, hoping to get an answer from the adults to resolve his long-standing confusion.
Cheng Zhanxi didn't know how to answer his question. She couldn't say Xiang Kang loved him but used the wrong methods, urging him to be filial to his father; that would be abetting a tyrant. But she also couldn't say Xiang Kang didn't love him; that would be too cruel for a teenager.
"There are no parents in the world who are always right." Cheng Zhanxi scoffed at this saying. She had seen too many parents who were "always wrong." Xiang Kang wasn't the first, and he certainly wouldn't be the last.
Tragedies caused by families will always exist in this world.
Xiang Tianyou's expression gradually dimmed, and he pressed his lips together.
Just as Cheng Zhanxi was about to speak, a calm, unwavering voice sounded beside her ear, "I used to think the same way as you."
Xiang Tianyou and Cheng Zhanxi both looked at Yu Qingtang.
Yu Qingtang said, "My..." She couldn't bring herself to say the word, so she omitted it. "He never cared for me since I was born, and he didn't let me call him by... that common term you use."
Xiang Tianyou: "Dad?"
Yu Qingtang paused for two seconds and "Mm-hmm"-ed.
Cheng Zhanxi was already starting to get angry, taking a deep breath.
She had thought Yu Qingtang's father was, at worst, the type of man too busy with work to care for his family. She never expected him to be such a scumbag! No matter the reason, treating one's own daughter like this made him a scumbag!
Xiang Tianyou: "Damn, my fists are clenched! How can he be even worse than my dad?"
Yu Qingtang first corrected him, "No swearing."
She was a little amused by their reactions, and her heavy mood lightened somewhat. "My mother died during a difficult childbirth. He loved my mother very much, so he projected some of his anger." Yu Qingtang discreetly took a breath and continued, "If it weren't for me, my mother wouldn't have died, and he wouldn't have lost his wife. It's understandable."
Xiang Tianyou swore again, "Understandable my ass!"
Cheng Zhanxi was more direct, "Pah!"
Xiang Tianyou, still not satisfied, followed with another, "Pah!"
The two said in unison, "This is infuriating!!!"
Yu Qingtang: "..."
Were they really that angry?
The two again said in unison, "Yes!"
The corners of Yu Qingtang's lips curved. Well, if they said so.
Cheng Zhanxi wasn't sure what Yu Qingtang's current attitude towards her father was, so she didn't dare to criticize rashly. Xiang Tianyou didn't care about that and said directly, "How can such a person be worthy of being a man? If the woman I loved passed away, I would definitely dote on my daughter even more. I hereby declare his man-card revoked!"
Yu Qingtang couldn't help but chuckle. "How old are you?"
Xiang Tianyou said seriously, "This has nothing to do with age. If I ever meet someone I like in my life, I will definitely treat her well, and treat our children well." He would absolutely not become like Xiang Kang.
Cheng Zhanxi asked, "Have you never resented him?"
Yu Qingtang shook her head.
Xiang Tianyou was exasperated, "You need to have some backbone!"
Yu Qingtang retorted, "Have you ever resented your dad?"
Xiang Tianyou's smile faded, and he lowered his head.
Two people from dysfunctional families saw themselves in each other.
Cheng Zhanxi, from a harmonious family, couldn't interject. There's no true empathy in the world, but she could offer a shoulder.
Yu Qingtang was twenty-eight, after all. That rotten flesh had festered in her heart for over twenty years; she had long since gotten used to it.
Yu Qingtang patted Xiang Tianyou's head, looked at him, and said gently, "Whether your father loves you or not, I can't give you the answer. You have to find it yourself. In the process of searching for the answer, don't get too fixated on this question. Learn to love yourself, love the people around you, grow up well, and become an adult like Teacher Cheng – kind, optimistic, gentle, and humble."
Cheng Zhanxi blushed at her praise.
Xiang Tianyou glanced at Cheng Zhanxi and nodded vigorously.
He asked Yu Qingtang, "So, Teacher, have you found the answer?"
Yu Qingtang nodded.
Xiang Tianyou asked, "What is it?"
Yu Qingtang said, "He doesn't love me."
The atmosphere immediately became heavy.
Cheng Zhanxi's eyes reddened at her incredibly calm tone, her heart feeling as if it were being twisted by a knife.
Xiang Tianyou's eyes also showed sadness, but he quickly cheered up and said, "It's okay. If he doesn't love you, I love you. I mean, our whole class loves you. Can't so many of us compare to him alone? Besides, there's Teacher Cheng, right?"
Cheng Zhanxi composed herself slightly and smiled. "Yes, I love Teacher Yu very much."
As she said this, she looked into Yu Qingtang's dark eyes, speaking very slowly. Yu Qingtang didn't look away, gazing into her eyes, and also said very slowly and seriously, "I love you too... you all."
She looked at Xiang Tianyou with the last word.
Xiang Tianyou smiled.
Actually, there was no need to include him. They were confessing to each other; he could just be a third wheel and eat dog food.
Cheng Zhanxi smiled faintly.
After the heavy conversation, Xiang Tianyou, finally relieved that he wouldn't be expelled, said, "Teacher Yu, I want to go to a haunted house this weekend." He clearly understood Cheng Zhanxi and Yu Qingtang's family status; he only needed to ask Yu Qingtang.
Yu Qingtang reminded him, "Final exams are next week."
Xiang Tianyou said, "I know, just the haunted house. I want to relax a bit." He wouldn't disturb their sweet date.
Cheng Zhanxi asked faintly from the side, "Aren't you scared?"
Xiang Tianyou grinned, showing his white teeth. "Of course, I am! Being scared is what makes it de-stressing."
Yu Qingtang asked, "Does Teacher Cheng have a problem with that?"
Teacher Cheng, of course, said it was no problem. Anyway, if she got scared afterward, Yu Qingtang would comfort her. By that calculation, it was a profitable deal.
Xiang Tianyou: "Let's go to a new haunted house. I heard there's a really fun one with a mental hospital theme. The ghosts even chase people. Have you seen Saw?"
Yu Qingtang hadn't. Cheng Zhanxi, who had been traumatized by her friends into watching countless horror movies, instantly had an image in her mind. As a painter, her imagination and memory were very strong.
Yu Qingtang's arm was suddenly grabbed by a hand, startling her.
She turned her head and saw it was Cheng Zhanxi's hand. Cheng Zhanxi, her little head filled with some unknown terrifying thought, turned deathly pale and unconsciously burrowed into Yu Qingtang's embrace.
Yu Qingtang's lips suddenly curved into a slight smile. She leaned down, close to Cheng Zhanxi's ear, and said eerily, "I've lost my legs. Can I have yours?"
...
A scream pierced the sky over the sports field.
The students on the field all turned their heads, trying to identify the direction of the sound.
"What's wrong?"
"What happened?"
"What's going on? Who screamed?"
A girl from Class 7 said, "Why does that sound like Teacher Cheng?"
Tong Feifei said, "Impossible! Our Teacher Cheng is a 'fierce 1'. How could she scream like a 'weak 0'? Teacher Yu is more likely."
Li Lan said sternly, "It's not Teacher Yu; I recognize her voice. Also, what 'weak 0'? Teacher Yu is an 'abstinent seme,' Teacher Cheng is the 'uke'."
Tong Feifei was speechless. "You... solo stan."
She looked at Lian Yabing and suddenly chuckled. Solo stans and CP fans have no future; they were bound to be irreconcilable.
Lian Yabing cupped her face and thought: Anyone can scream, preferably in bed.
...
Cheng Zhanxi covered her face and hid behind Yu Qingtang. Xiang Tianyou helped block the last remaining gap. Only after all the prying eyes from all directions had disappeared did he say it was okay. Cheng Zhanxi then peeked out from behind Yu Qingtang, looking around cautiously.
If she hadn't reacted quickly, her image in the school would have collapsed.
"Yu Qingtang!" Cheng Zhanxi sought to settle scores with the woman.
Xiang Tianyou, seeing things were about to go south, had already slipped away.
Yu Qingtang raised her hands in surrender, and Cheng Zhanxi pounced on her.
Laughter came from behind. Xiang Tianyou rubbed the goosebumps on his arm. If he ate any more dog food, he would burst.
He had just returned from the flagpole when Guo Fang on the basketball court raised a hand to him. "Brother Xiang! Wanna play ball?"
Xiang Tianyou grinned and jogged over. "Coming!"
Xiang Tianyou dribbled the ball, smoothly passing opponents, and shot the basketball from beyond the three-point line. The ball arched high in the air, reflecting the sun above, like another dazzling sun.
Xiang Tianyou squinted.
Thud! The ball hit the backboard hard, bounced on the rim, spun rapidly, and then fell through the net.
It went in!
The court erupted in enthusiastic cheers, with girls screaming continuously.
Xiang Tianyou ran around the basketball court, high-fiving his teammates, laughing heartily.
—Learn to love yourself, love the people around you, grow up well, and become an adult like Teacher Cheng.
He would definitely do it.
On Saturday morning, Yu Qingtang and Cheng Zhanxi took Xiang Tianyou to experience a new haunted house with a mental hospital theme.
Cheng Zhanxi's true nature had long been exposed. She was already chickening out on the way there, simultaneously warning the other two, "Don't you dare deliberately scare me, or I'll drive the car back, and neither of you will get to go to the haunted house."
Xiang Tianyou nodded like a chicken pecking rice.
Yu Qingtang nodded.
Cheng Zhanxi let out half a sigh of relief, holding onto the other half. She felt things might not go as smoothly as she imagined.
As soon as they joined the queue for the haunted house, Xiang Tianyou, like a curious baby, asked Yu Qingtang, "Teacher Yu, Teacher Yu, is Kayako from The Grudge?"
Yu Qingtang knew nothing about that; he was deliberately saying it for Cheng Zhanxi to hear.
Xiang Tianyou described, "Crawls on all fours, very fast."
Cheng Zhanxi clamped her hand over Xiang Tianyou's mouth from behind, ruthlessly manhandling his handsome face.
Xiang Tianyou: "Mmph mmph mmph mmph!" (Teacher Yu, save me!)
Yu Qingtang watched them fight, smiling happily, with no intention of rescuing either of them.
Xiang Tianyou was very mischievous now, but once inside the haunted house, he immediately behaved. He formed an alliance with Cheng Zhanxi, each of them clutching a corner of Yu Qingtang's clothes, acting all sneaky and scared.
"Ahhhhhhh!!!"
"Ahhhhhhhhhhhh!!!"
"Mommy, save me!!!!"
"Let me out!!!"
"I'm not playing anymore, I'm never playing again, boohoohoo..."
"If I ever come back, I'm a dog, woof woof woof..."
At the exit of the haunted house, a calm Yu Qingtang held a tear-streaked Xiang Tianyou with her left hand, while a pale-as-a-sheet Cheng Zhanxi clung to her right arm. Cheng Zhanxi's legs were like noodles; she couldn't even walk and was practically dragged out.
The two, having survived the ordeal, sat on a bench to rest.
Yu Qingtang went to buy three ice creams, giving two to them and keeping one for herself.
Yu Qingtang licked the tip of her vanilla ice cream and asked, "Coming back again?"
Xiang Tianyou and Cheng Zhanxi looked at each other and said in unison, "Yes!"
Yu Qingtang: "Who was it that said if they came back next time, they'd be a dog?"
Cheng Zhanxi & Xiang Tianyou, without hesitation: "Woof."
Little Theater:
Sometime later, in bed.
Cheng Zhanxi: "I don't want it anymore, I'll never want it again, boohoohoo... If I want it again, I'm a dog, woof woof woof..."
After it was over.
Yu Qingtang: "Want more?"
Cheng Zhanxi, with tears in her eyes, grabbed Jiejie's wrist, and said resolutely, "Yes!"
