Purely Accidental - Chapter 8

Chapter 8

Lin Feifei and Shao Xingcheng were exasperated with Pei Youshan's lack of initiative.

Such perfect conditions.

Such a natural relationship.

Yet she didn't even keep the woman overnight to explore carnal pleasures!

If this isn't the mercy of a bodhisattva saving all living beings, then what is?!

Bodhisattva Pei Youshan: "......"

Am I really that merciful...?

Shao Xingcheng insisted she was.

Lin Feifei dragged her into a voice chat and immediately launched into a lecture.

"Silly girl, you're paying for this! You're the sugar mommy here - this is a consensual arrangement where home runs are completely within bounds!"

"You need to step up, no shyness allowed! Defend your consumer rights!"

"And just look at her face - isn't she fragrant? Isn't she tempting? Doesn't she make your meals taste better?"

Pei Youshan was bombarded from both headphone channels by Lin Feifei's impassioned voice until she was thoroughly dazed.

Her reply came out dazed too: "She does, but..."

Lin Feifei's pitch shot up: "Then feast already!"

"You're both adults! Be bold and charge forward!"

"Go forth bravely like your protagonists do!!"

"You can do this!!!"

The more Pei Youshan listened, the more sense it made - crude phrasing but sound logic.

The timid thoughts she'd been suppressing suddenly sprang to life like tender new shoots bursting with vitality, poking insistently at her pounding heart until she tingled with anticipation.

Right - they were both consenting adults. Why shouldn't they?

If Xu Ge agreed to be kept and even initiated kissing, would she really refuse to go further?

And if Xu Ge did refuse...

Well, they'd cross that bridge later!

"Thanks girls," she said, reinvigorated. "I feel properly motivated now!"

"Next time I'll seize the opportunity and take the initiative!"

Hearing this, Lin Feifei suddenly felt reassured.

After all, this was the same person who'd vowed to seize an opportunity before promptly turning it into a sugar baby arrangement.

With that kind of decisive progress, what was there to fear?

Lin Feifei brimmed with hope for her: "Great! Invite her out tomorrow and kiss her until her lips wear thin!"

Pei Youshan: "......"

"...Let's not go that far."

She checked her work schedule as she spoke: "First let me see if I even have time tomorrow."

A quick scan revealed—wall-to-wall meetings.

Even the heavens didn't want them meeting tomorrow.

She sighed deeply: "Ugh, this sugar mommy is completely tied up tomorrow—only have time to earn keep for my little songbird."

Shao Xingcheng, who'd finally joined the voice chat: "...Your sacrifice is noted."

Pei Youshan: "We suffer together."

Shao Xingcheng: "If only Auntie Pei were in Jiang City—you'd have much more free time."

Pei Youshan propped her chin thoughtfully: "Not necessarily."

"She'd probably scheme new ways to make me meet Xu Jingshu."

A self-deprecating smile surfaced: "Not sure what we'd even talk about—compare notes on keeping lovers?"

Lin Feifei clapped: "Perfect chance to pick her brain about lover management! Adopt the good practices, discard the bad, then apply them to your little songbird. Brilliant!"

Shao Xingcheng: "Nice. I can already picture it."

Pei Youshan: "......"

"Get out, both of you!"

"Achoo."

Xu Jingshu turned away to sneeze delicately.

Xu Jingying poked her head out from her room: "Sis? Catching a cold?"

Xu Jingshu waved dismissively: "It's nothing."

Xu Jingying's expression turned mischievous: "Then maybe someone's thinking about you~"

Xu Jingshu leveled an unamused look at her.

Xu Jingying immediately retreated: "Goodnight President Xu!" The door clicked shut behind her.

Back in her room, Xu Jingshu's gaze swept past two phones on her desk before pausing. She picked up the newer one and opened WeChat, staring at Pei Youshan's profile picture—a small orange basking in golden sunlight, simple yet fresh.

After some hesitation, she set it down and turned off the lights.

No need for goodnight messages.

She wasn't the passionate, doting type anyway—this meaningless step could be skipped.

......

Xu Jingying emerged the next morning to find her sister sipping coffee elegantly while watching financial news, a tablet beside her showing a new high score in some game—likely taking a break between rounds.

Rubbing sleep from her eyes, Xu Jingying yawned: "Morning."

Xu Jingshu nodded serenely.

Xu Jingying headed to the bathroom to wash up.

The moment she disappeared, Xu Jingshu's phone rang.

Setting down the remote, she took the call by the window where morning light gilded her profile dreamily.

"President Xu."

Secretary Zhang Jingjing's voice came through.

"Updates regarding the copyright matter you asked me to follow."

At Xu Jingshu's acknowledging hum, Zhang continued: "Penglai's market research confirms the novel's strong adaptation potential, but multiple companies are bidding for this IP now."

"The platform's copyright division indicated the work's value exceeds current offers—there's room for negotiation."

"Also, Chairman An noticed your interest and asked for your input."

An Youda, Penglai Films' founder and Xu Jingshu's longtime associate.

Xu Jingshu's eyebrow arched.

So they wanted Penglai to raise their bid.

Xu Jingying emerged stretching, drank some water, then settled at the dining table chewing breakfast until she noticed her sister's scrutinizing gaze. She paused mid-chew: "...?"

I just woke up—what crime could I have committed???

Then Xu Jingshu stated calmly: "Secure it at all costs. Price is no object."

After all, it was meant to be a graduation gift.

......

Pei Youshan capped her pen and handed signed documents to her secretary before reviewing more files.

Her rapid scanning caught every crucial detail—including one problematic item.

She called her secretary: "Notify admin—meeting in fifteen minutes."

Secretary: "Understood."

The intercom clicked off—just as her phone rang.

Lin Feifei's cheerful voice came through: "Shanshan! Xu Jingshu's money is as good as yours now."

Pei Youshan: "?"

Lin Feifei quoted a figure: "Penglai's latest offer—no one's bidding higher."

Pei Youshan: "...?"

Damn, Penglai was really splurging.

Lin Feifei: "Copyright division says this already exceeds expectations, but they're worried higher might collapse negotiations. They recommend accepting Penglai's offer."

"Should we go with Penglai?"

Pei Youshan propped her cheek.

Exceeded expectations? This blew hers out of the water.

But if they were willing to pay, she'd be foolish to refuse.

"Deal."

"Draft the contracts."

......

7:10 PM.

Xu Jingying nearly launched out of her chair like a firework.

"Holy shit!"

"You actually got it?!"

"AAAAH I LOVE YOU SIS! COME HERE FOR A KISS!"

Xu Jingshu calmly fended off the incoming affection: "Keep your distance."

"Sit properly and eat."

"Yes ma'am!" Xu Jingying plopped down obediently. "Make sure Penglai does it justice, sis—us book fans will riot otherwise!"

Xu Jingshu served her some meat: "Obviously."

She hadn't spent a fortune to see it butchered.

An Youda knew better than anyone what was at stake.

Xu Jingying ate blissfully, even her scallion-picking motions radiating joy—until Xu Jingshu noticed the growing pile of discarded greens.

Which reminded her of someone else who hated scallions and cilantro.

And that someone hadn't contacted her all day.

After dinner, An Youda called: "Xiao Xu, it's been too long since you returned from abroad. How about catching up this Saturday? My treat—Seaside Residence at 6 PM?"

Xu Jingshu smiled: "I'll take you up on that."

An Youda chuckled: "No need for formalities with me! It's settled then—see you Saturday!"

After hanging up, her WeChat interface reappeared—still no notifications from the little orange icon.

Miss Yue truly hadn't reached out all day.

She turned off the screen decisively.

—When Miss Yue wanted something, she'd make contact.

......

Miss Yue was currently sprawled on her sofa, utterly drained after showering and eating, unable to move.

Today's endless meetings had nearly killed her—especially interspersed with having to scold subordinates while maintaining her stern CEO facade. The exhaustion was physical and mental.

She almost suspected Pei Lanqing had deliberately left this workload to temper her as successor.

Sigh—no idle luxury in this lifetime.

Groaning, she reached for her ringing phone: "Feifei? What now?"

Lin Feifei: "Messenger pigeon again!"

Pei Youshan: "Hm?"

Lin Feifei: "Remember Penglai's producer wanted to meet? Now that you're partnering, should we schedule it? You could discuss requirements in person."

Requirements...

Pei Youshan opened her eyes slowly.

She did have several.

"Sure. When?"

Lin Feifei: "This Saturday, 6 PM at Seaside Residence."

"If you're busy, we can reschedule."

Saturday, Seaside Residence...

Pei Youshan checked mentally.

—She was free.

Yawning tearfully, she agreed: "That works."

"So tired... this child needs sleep now."

"Night."

Before bed, she habitually scrolled through WeChat contacts—pausing at Xu Jingshu's chat.

A question surfaced:

Why wasn't her sugar baby initiating contact?

Sometimes attentive, sometimes distant—so inconsistent.

After some thought, she realized: Xu Ge only acted on explicit instructions.

Like when she'd mentioned "needs," Xu Ge had taken it as invitation to kiss—until clarified otherwise.

So perhaps... she needed to explicitly request more initiative?

Like how proper sugar babies proactively checked in?

Another yawn overtook her—too sleepy to formulate proper instructions now.

Her fingers tapped the screen absently, typing something half-consciously.

As sleep claimed her, she vaguely registered sending a message.

She'd check tomorrow.

Phone slipping from her grasp, she drifted off.

Xu Jingshu received a five-word message from the little orange:

Simple yet profoundly suggestive.

—[Be more proactive with me]

Support my work!
